Sony E 10-18mm f/4 Lens (SEL1018)

The Sony 10-18mm f/4 Wide-Angle Zoom Lens SEL1018 is an ultra wide-angle E-mount zoom lens compatible with the Alpha NEX cameras and NEX Handycam Camcorders. In the 35mm format, the focal lengths are equivalent to a 15-27mm field of view which is extremely wide-angle with exaggerated perspectives- ideal for expansive landscapes, certain interiors and creative portraits and group shots. With an aperture of f/4.0 throughout the zoom range, fast shutter speeds and low ISO settings can be used even in low light for bright, sharp images. With the Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization system it is even easier to shoot blur-free photos and videos in low light, regardless of camera shake. Three aspherical lens elements reduce spherical aberration and distortion and Super Extra-low Dispersion glass reduces chromatic aberration for high quality images even at maximum aperture. Fast autofocus is facilitated by movement of the lens elements at the rear of the lens and the 7-blade circular aperture creates smooth, circular bokeh in the out-of-focus areas within the frame.

A surprisingly versatile lens, worth the money.

I bought a Rokinon 12mm instead, at first, because it was less expensive and, even within its limitations, would probably do the trick. But I was mistaken. Sometimes you just have to shell out the money for what you really need. The build quality of this lens is very good - while still being lightweight. It fits my a6300 beautifully - with good balance and fit in the hand, and good looks, as well. Highlights include excellent autofocus, a nicely weighted focus ring, when shooting in manual, and sharp, color accurate imaging throughout the range. I've used it mostly for video and it resolves quite well for 4K. Initially, I looked at this as a specialized lens, but I've been keeping it on camera more of the time now. With Sony's amazing Clear Zoom - you can push it to a field of view equivalent of about 54mm - so it winds up being a surprisingly versatile lens. I should have bought this a year ago. It does so many things so well.

I live in Colorado and wanted to save a little money on this lens. I looked at the description of what was included and saw that it had a nice filter and lens cleaning kit, the latter being something that I did not need. I ordered anyway and in doing so, thought I was buying a lens without the lens cap and lens hood. I shopped online and found them on Amazon really cheap with free delivery. I looked at getting them from B & H but the website told me I would pay shipping plus I did not see the cheap knock off on the B & H website. Good Choice for Travel Photos

In bright light the shutter speed will usually let me get sharp images without vibration reduction, but if I am traveling without a tripod it's good to know that I can still take shots at twilight or indoors that will be usable, I compared the images from this lens with others from my Zeiss 2,8/12mm Touit lens. Nonetheless, images made with the Sony compare favorably with those from the Zeiss, at least in the center of the picture. Images from the Zeiss are definitely more sharp and contrasty across the whole picture, and out of focus areas are more attractive. But the Sony is quite close in overall picture quality. For travel photos where I am shooting rapidly on the go the Sony gets my vote. For landscapes where I always have a tripod and plenty of time to get the shot just right the Zeiss is a better choice. In other words, the choice of lenses should be based on the intended purpose.

Great if you need the built in image stabilization
23 June 2022

Considering this lens is almost ten years old, it works well. I would purchase this lens while it is on sale but not pay the original price of $899.99. Sony just announced a new 10-20mm APS-C lens, but it lacks built-in image stabilization, so if you need that, I would go for this lens instead of the new one. However, I returned this for the Tamron 11-20mm lens since it is newer. The Tamron also lacks built-in image stabilization, but considering I am using the lens with the a6600, which has it built into the camera, it was a non-issue for me.

Great wide angle

This is one of my favorite lenses for my A6500. There arent many options for a wide angle zoom for APS-C e-mount and considering the price compared to a full frame lens at twice the price this produces some terrific quality photos. Its not without its caveats though. barrel distortion is pretty obvious and vignetting can get bad on occasion. lightroom RAW corrections help but it still shows somewhat. In my opinion this is to be expected for such a wide angle. The lens is pretty sharp for what its designed for but dont expect a 100% crop to be overly usable.the design is well done, its very compact and can even be stuffed into a big enough pocket if thats your thing. all functions are smooth and precise. Expect it to hunt some in low light though.Having said all that Sony had to cut corners somewhere to meet the price point and considering the inherent issues that come with wide angle zoom I dont really hold any of the listed issues against it.I think this is a terrific lens and Ive gotten some of my best shots with it.My only real complaint is not about the lens itself, the lens cap is junk. Its so low profile with no real grip to speak of that I find myself dropping or almost dropping it a lot. I much prefer Sigmas lens caps that are squared off and raised with texture for added grip.

The Sony E 10-18/4 is a high quality lens intended to capture sweeping vistas on Sony APSC mirrorless cameras. I have used this lens on NEX7, A6000, A6300 and also on a full-frame A7R2. The lens is superbly sharp if stopped to f5.6 or f8.0, which is a usual setting for landscape images. Sharpness at f4.0 is good for all but the 10mm setting, which may be a bit restrictive in some circumstances. Distortion is quite big at the extreme ends of the zoom range (particularly at 10mm) so if the lens is used for architectural shots a middle range of the zoom would be the most appropriate unless one shoots in JPG (which corrects for the distortion) or is prepared to correct RAW images in post processing. On the three newer cameras A6000, A6300 and A7R2 chromatic aberration is not significant and rarely needs correcting in post-processing. By contrast, on the older NEX7 camera images taken at 10mm zoom setting have a strong magenta cast, which is difficult to remove in post processing. An easy way round the limitation of this camera-lens combination is to convert images taken at 10-12mm setting to BW. If the images need to be in colour than brightening and de-saturating magenta channel goes a long way to correcting the image.

There is a small amount of pincushion distortion at any focal length, which is acceptable (even for video). At f4 the lens is quite dark, which becomes apparent when you see how much grain you get on a cropped sensor. The price... Its too high for the specs you get and china assembly. Dont get me wrong, but Sony prices this lens as pro level, but it hardly can produce pro level image.Overall, its a good product, which is in conjunction with aps-c sensor is full of compromises. If its photography youre buying it for, think twice. For video, depending on the genre, this might be a good option.

Small & lightweight at the cost of soft edges
30 December 2022

I've been using this lens for the past 7 years with the A6000 and A6400. This is a fantastically small and lightweight lens that you can carry anywhere but at the cost of soft edges and poor performance for certain kinds of nighttime shooting, such as astrophotography. About 15-20% of each side is stretched out/distorted and soft, and you'll often have to stop down to f8+ to get them acceptable. The center is good, but nowhere near premium lenses. The Canon however was a burden to carry when hiking an average of 10-14 miles with a typical elevation gain of about 4000ft, or when being active/going out with the girlfriend. So I bought the A6000 with this lens and the 18-105. Being able to carry the small Sony with me everywhere with a range of 10-105mm means I have grabbed far more shots than I would have with just the Canon. I sold most of my Canon gear, but in the last 2 years I've been migrating back to more capable lenses such as the Tokina 11-20 f2.8 (which blows the Sony 10-18 away) and Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS + MC11 adapter whenever I can get away with heavier, bulkier gear. I just get better results with them and more shooting capability. I'll still keep the Sony 10-18 but reserve it's use for hiking, kayaking, and going out with the gf.

So far, I love it

First, my use case:- Sony NEX7- Most photos made in the last 15 years are travel/street/people.- Previously, macro and close in landscape. That said, I really like wide/ultra wide lenses for street photography. My favorite walk-around lens for urban environments has been the Sony 16mm pancake. In conjunction with the NEX7, it's pocketable (if you have large pockets). This lens is very big by comparison. To be honest, it's bigger than I thought it would feel on the NEX. As an f4, it's slower, but the OSS makes it pretty much equivalent, allowing a stop slower shutter speed.I've only had a few hours and three venues with the lens, but I've decided it's a Christmas gift to myself that I will really enjoy growing with! The filter and cleaning kit are totally ... MoreFirst, my use case:- Sony NEX7- Most photos made in the last 15 years are travel/street/people.- Previously, macro and close in landscape. That said, I really like wide/ultra wide lenses for street photography. They had nothing to do with the purchase of the wonderful lens (sorry B&H, I know you meant well)

Sony 10-18mm f/4 lens, great compact ultra wide lens for Sony APS-C cameras.

This is a great small lens for Sony APS-C cameras. While it is not as small as the collapsable 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6, both are similar sizes when the camera is powered up. Starting at 10mm gives you a 15mm equivalent well into ultra-wide territory. Going to 18mm (28mm equivalent) gives you the same perspective as most of the newest mobile phones, so you're getting a very versatile lens here. The corners do get a bit soft at 10mm wide open at f/4, it's mostly ignorable and the softness goes away at f/5.6. The hood is excellent, and this lens does something you wouldn't expect at this price point--10mm actually sticks out the most, and the lens retracts as you zoom towards 18mm. This makes the hood shade more effectively shaded at 18mm, and at 10mm the lens can peer ... MoreThis is a great small lens for Sony APS-C cameras. This makes the hood shade more effectively shaded at 18mm, and at 10mm the lens can peer around the shallow hood. Mechanically the lens has an all metal exterior, zooming and focus are smooth and rotate freely. Lens creep doesn't happen. It's filter size is 62mm, slightly unusual, but an obvious choice for a compact ultra wide lens. If you can coax some bokeh from this lens, it's fairly neutral in character.
