Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS Lens

As the first Sony G Lens designed specifically for EMount cameras, the SELP18105G combines high image quality with a precise and quiet power zoom. The constant F4 aperture means you get stunning image quality even in low light. Are you filming? This powerful zoom uses Handycam technology to provide smooth zooming that is difficult to achieve manually. It's also very quiet so you won't startle your protagonists, while the integrated zoom lever allows you to maintain an even zoom speed. Known for their quality, G Series lenses offer excellent imaging performance with maximum contrast right to the edges of the image. The lens' builtin optical SteadyShot image stabilisation system ensures crisp, blurfree photos and video for handheld shooting. Instead of a standard polygon shaped aperture, this lens offers a circular aperture with 7 blades for a natural, soft bokeh. Aspherical lens elements ensure minimal distortion, while ED (Extralow Dispersion) glass elements ensure outstanding contrast, resolution and colour depth. The integrated focusing mechanism ensures a constant lens length, is easy to use and has a fast autofocus and a small minimum focus distance. In addition, the filter thread on the front of the lens does not rotate a clear advantage when using polarizing filters.

It's a kit lens, so don't expect the best - however, it excels at what it's made to do, cover a long zoom range at a reasonable f-stop. Keeping a constant F/4 throughout the entire zoom range is fantastic, especially when using this lens in a live production situation. It's my primary lens for my FS5. Zoom is very smooth, when controlled either with the rocker on the lens barrel or a LANC controller. Housing is made of metal, and it feels pretty rugged - but it's not super heavy like some Canon L series lenses. My only gripe is that there's no feedback whatsoever when you focus - the focus and zoom rings are electronic controls for the focus and zoom, so there's no way to see or feel when you've gone as far as the lens can go. I intend to pick up an FX30 soon and will likely grab another one of these for that camera too.The power zoom function DOES work with older Sony cinema cameras with zoom rockers like the FS700. I haven't tested others like the FS100 or A series mirrorless cameras. All in all, this is a solid lens and is a great bang for the buck. A great choice for live production since the only other option is the 28-135 which is more than double the price of this guy.Remember, this is NOT a full frame lens - only supports APS-C/Super 35 sensors.

Theres a lot packed into this lens! First, the zoom range is amazing and covers pretty much everything I would want in one lens for handheld use. The OSS helps keeps things steady and the power zoom is great for video work, especially when paired with a camera with a zoom switch like the FX30.It's small and light for such a varied focal length but the metal build stops it from feeling cheap. The zoom is internal which I definitely prefer over extending barrels with the zoom and focus rings being nicely dampened and smooth to use. Constant F4 aperture is a god send as I don't really like variable aperture zooms, fair enough if it's f2 to 2.8 like the tamron 35mm-150mm but not something naff like F4 to 7.1 (I'm looking at you canon!)Lastly, image quality and I ... MoreTheres a lot packed into this lens! I pushed this lens to the limit and was pleased with it!

This is a great bring to the beach kind of lens. The f/4 is fine for portraits (it's no 2.8, no where close to 1.4, but good enough at 60mm+). Though, I actually drop it down to 6 and crank up the shutter to 1/2000, and I'm able to get a lot of action pics with surprisingly good (not perfect) sharpness, even with aggressive cropping ( a few crops were meh, though). The lens starts to take a dive in quality during the golden hour, like 30 minutes before sunset. However, by bringing the shutter speed down to...say...1/250 (1/50 with still subjects) and the f-stop to 4, I can squeeze in some pretty nice pics. I took an in-door pic of my dog, in unfavorable lighting, and was quite pleased with the results (used a tiny bit of denoise - nothing major). Would I use this ... MoreThis is a great bring to the beach kind of lens. The f/4 is fine for portraits (it's no 2.8, no where close to 1.4, but good enough at 60mm+). Would I use this lens at nighttime, or in-door, family gatherings? Only if I use one of my external flashes. Would I use it at an afternoon BBQ (no flash)? You bet! This lens is fantastic on a sunny day! I haven't tried doing video with it yet, so this review is only based on taking stills. As for the lens build, it's so much lighter and shorter than my Sigma 70-200 (my primary lens), so this felt like a feather lol. I know many prefer the Sony 18-135 for stills, but I truly do love the fact I can take portrait-like pics at 60mm+ with the f/4, that I rather stick with this lens as my jack of many, not all, trades. Also, it feels very rugged with its metal frame. The electric zoom is cool, but I probably won't use it. If bokeh is super important to you in every shot (maybe you are shopping for portrait zoom lenses), or tend to shoot in lower light settings, then go with the Tamron 17-70mm or the Sigma 18-50. However, if you want that extra zoom range and don't mind using 60mm-100mm (75-90 at f/4 looks good imo) for portraits, then this lens is for you. I hear it's even better with video, so that's another bonus.

If you could only take one lens

Ive spent years collecting professional camera equipment. Big heavy full frame DSLRs and heavy 2.8 lenses. My mindset has always been that I need the best gear to take a good photo. But, carrying all this stuff around is back breaking. I got this lens so that I could try to carry less gear, and its been game changing. The 18-105 fitted to my Sony A6300, combined, weighs less than my Canon 24/70 2.8 on its own. Ive found that this lens and my dated A6300 is my go-to setup for 90% of everything I do now. The lens gives a great deal of flexibility given its huge focal range, and for something like the A6300 which has no in body stabilisation it adds another level to what you can capture. The lens gives a great deal of flexibility given its huge focal range, and for something like the A6300 which has no in body stabilisation it adds another level to what you can capture. The lens is tack sharp, however the only caveat is that it does have a some warping. The centre of the frame does have some barrel distortion, and there is some light vignetting in the corners. You can remove them in Lightroom, but I find the camera lens correction profile can soften that tack sharp image. I actually like the look of the photos without correction. Im an advocate of lenses having character. If youre looking to get an identical photo from any lens you use which is tack sharp with no distortion across the entire frame then this perhaps is not the lens for you. For me, thelens performs best in its f8 to f11 range. Opening it up to f4 produces some nice Bokeh but the images are noticeably softer when pixel peeping. If youre looking for a lightweight versatile lens for day to day photography then this is an incredible lens for the price. If you need something that performs in low light or something which is a little more scientific with regards to the slight barrel distortion this lens produces, then perhaps there are better but more expensive options for you. Its not a replacement for all of my expensive gear. Its not that much of a unicorn. But for a lightweight run and gun lens this gets more use than any of my other equipment. The versatility and the price point make this a 5/5 for me. If I was being harsh Id drop to a 4/5 on image quality just for to the barrel distortion, but for the price thats an acceptable hitch for me.

Incredibly versatile APS-C Lens!

I've been using this lens for years on my crop sensors.I don't know what kind of wizardry Sony is using to get this much optics in such a small, lightweight package, but this is an incredible all around lens for APS-C sensors.I primarily shoot video and have both Full-Frame and APS-C Sony Cameras, and when I'm not shooting prime, this lens lives on my APS-C bodies. The zoom range is so versatile. With the low light these cameras can handle these days, this lens has got to be part of your run and gun kit. For documentaries, it really doesn't get any better as far as range AND speed go.The only thing about this lens that is not even a down side at all, is after coming over from my full-frame G-Master, this feels like a toy. Its incredibly light weight, which can be a pro or a con depending on your perspective. All in all, I think this lens will remain in my kit for years to come. Thanks Sony!

Solid optics, very useful range

I've been shooting with this lens for the past 7 years. I had a Canon 5D2 at the time with 16-35 f2.8 L, 70-200 f2.8 IS, and some primes, but it was too big and heavy for a lot of occasions. I ended missing shots on occasions when I left part of my kit behind, or I didn't bring it at all. The lens is sharp across the frame at f6.3-f8 throughout most of it's range. It's not as sharp as a premium lens, but I have no real complaints there. It's just ok at it's widest apertures and focal lengths. If I had to do it over with the choices available today, I'd probably pick the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 for it's superior optics but it's another 100 grams heavier and about 2x what I paid for this lens. The Sigma 18-50 f2.8 is cheap, light, small, and has excellent optics but just a bit short at 50mm without carrying an additional, longer lens.

This is an excellent E-mount APS-C lens. The range of focal lengths covered makes this a good candidate for your only lens. In my experience once you go much longer than this the quality drops off. This is a good compromise between size and light gathering. The constant F4 along with the image stabilization allows for a reasonable low light capability. I cannot see any serious faults with the image quality. I can see issues with the standard kit lens although the kit lens is not as bad as some people say. In my opinion it is far superior to several 3rd part prime lenses I have used. It handles well and the Grade A version I purchased looks like new. I highly rate this lens for my purposes.

WOW!
29 February 2024

I wanted to find a lens that had a wide focal range, so I purchased this lens for my second shooter to use on her new Sony FX30.In our first test with this lens + camera combo, we were amazed at the versatility of this lens! Not only does it have a really wild range, but the stabilization worked so well with the in body stabilization of the FX30, the footage AND images looked lovely. This is an amazing lens, and it may not be the fastest lens, but thanks to Sony cameras with their lowlight capabilities you don't really notice. This lens produces some very pleasing bokeh. The autofocus is fast and reliable! If you are thinking about this lens, you should just get it. If you think this glass can help you, you will be pleased with your decision to get this LOVELY lens.
