In my opinion this is an incredibly sharp lens that focuses incredibly well. I have used this lens on my A7RII and A7RIV. I have attached wide angle astro shots taken at f1.8, 2.4, 2.8 and f4. These are extreme crops each taken from the upper right of the original photo. I used a tracker and took each shot for 60 seconds. At f1.8 the coma is terrible (unusable). At f2.4 it is just about all gone. At f2.8 the coma is gone and the stars look very good. At f4.0 there is absolutely no coma and the stars are even sharper in my opinion. I just wanted to let folks know that will use this lens for wide angle astro shots that f2.4 is about the minimum and f1.8 is unusable. This lens also is easy to manually focus at night (far easier than a Rokinon and Laowa). On another ... MoreIn my opinion this is an incredibly sharp lens that focuses incredibly well. The Lightroom profile seems to darken the middle of the image and create a vignette around the outside perimeter of the photo (I got the same result on both my A7RII and A7RIV). I have turned off the profile and adjust the vignette manually. I know this is not a scientific test, but hopefully this will be helpful to those that might choose this lens for wide angle astro photography.

Almost everything about this lens is perfect. The build quality, the sharpness of the images it produces, the range of focal lengths. I absolutely couldn't be happier. If I was forced to say something bad about it for the folks that seem to thrive on finding something negative about a product, it would be that there is only one option that I've found for mounting a front filter holder on the lens. This is a fairly expensive option at about $500 for the holder and filter.Luckily Haida makes a rear filter holder which is much more affordable.

This is a great ultra wide angle lens. I primarily bought this lens to take night launch pictures from KSC and learn to perfect my astrophotography with its low f1.8 stop. I did notice some minor fisheye in the corners (look at the trees in pic of the rocket over the building), but with a lens this wide, its hard to not have any and this GM lens does a fairly good job at keeping it to a minimum. All of my lenses are GM, but this was my first prime lens which I am still getting used to. I am very happy with this purchase and the only lens I would have passed this up for was the GM 12-24, but the price tag was too hefty to justify what I was going to use it for. See for yourself and you will not regret it if you buy this lens!! I also dabble in landscape photography ... MoreThis is a great ultra wide angle lens. I attached this lens to my Sony alpha 7 IV. Photos are all unedited, straight out of camera JPG files. I've read many reviews before buying this lens and this just does not disappoint at all. This lens in my mind needs to be described as a fun lens. As a G Master, the sharpness is given. What I am finding is how the photos come out as exceptionally well planned balances from edge to edge. From the building photos you can tell it's all straight lines. Also the colors are astonishing. Again these are unedited, straight out of the camera. This is highly recommended one of a kind lens.
I took my new 14mm f/1.8 lens to Death Valley for a week and got fabulous Milky Way shots. On the last pre-dawn morning in the Alabama Hills, a wind gust knocked over my tripod and the lens went face down into the sand and gravel. The resulting scratches & pits don't show below f8, but I will likely buy a replacement anyway. My complaint is that there is no way to add a protective lens filter because of the design of the lens. I would also like to use this 14 mm with an ND filter for wide angle, long exposure during the daytime. Again, no way to attach a filter on the front. I am still giving it 4 stars because the image quality is great and it is easy to focus, even at night. I shot at f2 and had good image quality all the way to the corners with no coma or barrel ... MoreI took my new 14mm f/1.8 lens to Death Valley for a week and got fabulous Milky Way shots. Sony has recently launched high-end new products. Not long after enjoying the ultimate blur of the FE 50mm F1.2 GM lens, we ushered in a G master super wide-angle fixed focus lens FE 14mm F1.8 GM.The FE 14mm F1.8 GM adopts the standard design language of the Sony G master lens. The size of about 83mm x 99.8mm and the weight of 460g are very compatible with the Alpha 1 body.As an ultra-wide-angle lens, the FE 14mm F1.8 GM front group adopts a large-curvature front group bulb design. In order to protect the lens, the hood is fixed and cannot be removed. The front and rear lenses of the lens are coated with fluoride, which can reduce dust, oil and fingerprints on the surface of the lens. The front and rear lenses of the lens are coated with fluoride, which can reduce dust, oil and fingerprints on the surface of the lens. In terms of accessories, the lens is equipped with a "lens hood." This design is the same as the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM, which can provide a good protection for the front lens.In terms of control buttons, the FE 14mm F1.8 GM is equipped with an aperture ring, a customizable focus holding button, focus mode switch, and stepless aperture click switch. In addition, the lens manual focus ring also has linear response characteristics, which can be smooth and precise manual focus adjustment. From the actual shooting point of view, the FE 14mm F1.8 GM has a good resolution when the F1.8 aperture is fully opened, and the center and edge image quality are more consistent.Judging from the actual shooting experience, the Sony FE 14mm F1.8 GM has excellent optical quality, and the focus and control also maintain the consistently excellent level of the G master lens, and this is achieved under the weight of 460g. It is true that the short flange distance has natural advantages for the miniaturization of ultra-wide-angle lenses, but I still admire Sony's volume and weight control when designing this lens. And under such a volume and weight, the lens's dispersion and coma suppression have reached a very amazing level.
When Sony and Zeiss, and Panasonic and Leica, started to market their Mirrorless designs, I'm sure they realized that they were going to have to far outshine what was then available in order to have an impact on the market. They've made a true believer of me. Mechanics and optics in their products are exceeding - running away from their competitors' offerings. This new Sony 14mm f1.8 lens strikes me as a milestone in the industry. So, what's all the hype about? Truth is, it isn't hype. The lens is just smaller, lighter, wider, faster, ergonomically a joy to handle. Balance on my A7Rii is just about right. Best I can determine, after only a few weeks use, the resolution sweet-spot is at or about f4. Auto focus seems instant. Best I can determine, after only a few weeks use, the resolution sweet-spot is at or about f4. Auto focus seems instant. Manual focus even at this wide angle, with Sony's auto-magnification feature is tactile with quick feedback and high precision. With the glass inside and G-Master construction standards, corrections are already superior. Throw a good software profile at it, and you have the potential for stunning images. What you want to accomplish with an ultra-wide lens will not be compromised by this new sweetie.Guess I must be coming across as an acolyte worshipping at the altar of Sony, but the fact is, I bought this lens for my own use, and I paid full price for it. You know the G-Master lenses are not cheap, so that was not easy. If you can manage the price, you will not be disappointed. At this time, I'm not seeing any better lens in this range on the market, and I'm loving using it!
I use the Sony 14mm 1.8 GM for photo and video. On my Sony A7 IV with 4K 60p, I am getting equivalent to 24mm due to the 1.7 crop factor. This is with breathing compensation, 60p crop, and active steady shot enabled. The videos shot in S-log 3 10bit 4.2.2 looks absolutely amazing with this lens. It's also a perfect gimbal lens. Can't wait to use it for some dynamic city scapes at night or Astro. This is Gold Master at its finest!
I have had this lens for 6 months and it is one of my favorites, especially with my Sony FX6, as the gyro data works very well when it crops in, because this lens is so wide. Not wide enough to cause distortion, but very wide. I was at a wedding recently and the room was packed with over 165 people and I still had lots of room all around the frame when I popped this lens on.Auto focus in fast as per usual for Sony GM lenses. I love the f/1.8 this lens offers. The lowlight is unmatched. It's very light, and very portable. Since I use this on my FX6, I don't need to worry about ND filters, since that camera has a built in variable ND. I do own a Sony A7 IV, so I am interested to see what I can use since the front cannot of this lens can't accept filters.I am a ... MoreI have had this lens for 6 months and it is one of my favorites, especially with my Sony FX6, as the gyro data works very well when it crops in, because this lens is so wide. This is a very sharp lens that is easy to manually focus. I purchased this lens mainly for wide area astrophotography on my A7RII and A7RIV. Below I have attached some images I cropped from the upper right-hand corners that show how well this lens handles coma. At f1.8 this lens has terrible coma. It is unusable for Astro at f1.8. At f2.4 the coma is substantially reduced, and I would say it is acceptable for Astro. At f2.8 all the coma is gone, and the stars look good. At f4.0 there is no coma, and the image quality is outstanding. I used a star tracker on these photos with an exposure time of 60 seconds. I saw this same occurrence with my A7RII and A7RIV with this lens. I turn off the profile and adjust the vignette to correct for this.
