Amazing lens

I own several Gmaster lenses, a Sony A7RIIIa, A9 & A1. I was looking for a single travel pick up and go travel camera, where I didn't need to haul around all my equipment when with family. I purchased the Sony 24-105 and put this on the A7RIIIa. I now ask myself why I waited so long to buy this lens. The lens is light and very sharp and handles my night photography easily. I find it super convenient to carry all day comfortably without having my Thinktank pack and at least three lenses with me all the time. Thanks to Pictureline & Colin Bigelow for all you assistance and knowledge in assisting with my purchases.

This is the one lens I would take if I could only take one lens to travel. First, it is lightweight at 1.46 lbs. Second, it is a versatile lens with wide-angle and telephoto options to capture most of what you would need when traveling. Third, the optics of this lens minimize chromatic aberration and distortion. Forth, the autofocus capability of this lens is impressive- quick and accurate. Finally, the coating on the exposed glass and the mechanics of the lens help to protect it against the environment. The only limitation I found relates to those who want a lens for video creation. Very useful focal range for a general purpose lens. The OSS works well and quite sharp through out the range. My only complaint is: at the price level it's at, which is very similar to the Canon RF L version, the build quality on this lens could be better. The L lenses just have a better quality build to them and they're made in Japan. The Sony somehow just feels cheaper built. If you squeeze the rear part of the Sony lens near the zoom ring, the barrel actually deforms slightly at some parts, due to the softer plastic. The Canon is also plastic, but feels much more solid. My 10+ year old EF lens from Canon is still rock solid as new. I can't speak to the longevity of the Sony version yet, but have a feeling it won't hold up as well as the Canon.

Four years on, still the best all-purpose zoom
4 June 2022

I have used this lens for over four years and taken about 30,000 images with it. It is very sharp across the range, the color rendition is great, and the autofocus always is on target. It is sturdy (I tested this in the field), yet not very heavy. It may not be the very best lens at anything, but very good at most things. I have taken many hand-held night shots with this lens at ISO 6400 at 1/15 of a second. This lens has image-stabilization (in contrast to its main competitors), and it works great in tandem with the in-body stabilization of my A7 III. You even can shoot portraits with this lens in a pinch; at 105mm, you get enough compression for a decent bokeh.

Greg's review of Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 16-70mm f/4 ZA SEL-1670Z
24 December 2022

Pros: Fantastic jack of all trades lens. Great sharpness even at the corners through most of the zoom range and still good results even at 105. Has been ideal lens for street, travel and events. I wasn’t sure if it could handle night street photography and dark indoor events but the optical image stabilisation in the lens has meant I can still get good shots even zoomed in. Whilst there are lens that are better than this one in every situation this lens is very good in a wide range of situations!Cons: Could be more compact and lightweight if Sony redesigned their the lens like they have for some of their other older lenses

I have never spent over a $1000 on a lens until now. As long as I’m already spending the money on a superb camera, Sony a7iii, it didn’t make any sense to buy a mediocre lens for. After some considerable reviews, I decided on this Sony 24-105mm OSS as my first lens with a high probability that it remains as my primary lens down the road. My first impression was that this lens was HUGE. As with any camera lens, I strongly advised purchasing a UV filter. The filter size for lens is 72mm, considerably larger then my old Canon lens filter. It felt like it weighed more than the camera body. The larger the lens, e more photons it can pick up. The better the lens quality, the sharper the image. Together, it makes a superb lens. So far I used this lens to take photos of my daughter soccer games while sitting high up in the bleachers, taking photos of family activities, group photos, everyday street activities, macro shots of dragon flies and flowers. photos taken indoors without flash, and outdoors under various lighting conditions, Photos of my daughter soccer games after cropping to zoom in on the subjects looked surprisingly sharp. I can honestly say that all of the photos I’ve taken so far have been very impressive. I attributed that to the camera and the lens. The OSS Keep the image steady even under low lighting. There are times when taking photos with a flash is prohibited or not optimal, the stabilization feature on this lens is the best I’ve seen so far. Professional reviewers said as much and I can see why. I still rely on my tripod for long exposure shooting. Can’t see myself holding the camera on a subject for when doing long exposure such as that of the night landscape. Do I recommend the lens. The answer is YES, YES, and YES. Is it worth the money? The answer again is a resounding yes. Do I think the lens is expensive? I do. It is definitely not cheap. There are other lens companies such as Tamron that also make good lenses that can potentially be cheaper than this Sony lens. I however chose this over all others because of the overwhelming I read about it. Another thing to consider is that not all lenses are suited for every shooting situations. You have to think about what you primary use it for then pick a lens that best suited for it.

Read if you're considering the 24-70GM over this
30 November 2021

I bought this lens with the A73 and then a year later or so had a friend that offered me his 24-70 GM for $1200, which was a great deal since that lens was over $2k at the time. I was expecting the GM to blow it out of the water but after comparing them was very surprised with the results. Comparing both lenses at f/4 the 24-105 is sharper throughout the whole range, even though f/4 is wide open for the 24-105 and a few stops down for the 24-70 where it should be really sharp. I thought maybe I had a not so great copy but I looked at thedigitalpictures charts and the results were almost exactly the same. Really hard to justify picking the GM over this especially considering how well cameras perform in low light nowadays. And if you wanted comparable bokeh to the GM @ 70mm/2.8 you could just back up with the 24-105 and zoom to 85-105mm at f/4 and it should look similar.

VERSATILE ALL ROUNDER
7 September 2022

This Sony 24-105 4 is the most practical high-quality zoom you can get for your Sony. Everything works great and all my pictures are super-sharp and well exposed. It works great on the APS-C cameras (I use it with my a6300) as well as my full frame cameras. A7iii, A7r4 and now my A1 - flawlessly. Stunningly sharp at all focal lengths.Great as an all rounder, landscapes, portraits, street photography and architecture. It is always attached to one of my cameras, regardless of what I am tackling it is always my first choice go to lens.If it ever died (damaged or stolen) I would go straight out and get another. Excellent lens Sony.

You'll park your primes

I'm a 30 years pro and I've owned many many systems. Like many of you I enjoy the look of primes and choose them for available light/shallow dof lifestyle looks. I picked up this lens after spending a ton on glass as a travel/backup. Guess what? I use it way way more than I thought I would. When shooting Ecommerce fashion, product, industrial video, and other commercial jobs this lens is phenomenal. Yes, 24-70 2.8 is the gold standard for this type of work but the added range is really helpful. I don't miss f2.8 at all. In fact, at f4 I get more keepers due to the added dof. The sharpness argument is marketing nonsense perpetuated by pixel peeping poseurs. This lens is all u need. No, get the 35mm GM too. It's THE lens for available light narrative work. It has been to four continents, and it has never let me down. I usually add my Zeiss Batis 18mm to my travel kit for architectural shots, particularly church interiors. Three years later I would buy this lens all over again.
