A lot of bang from the money

Speaking simply, this lens is far superior than the old 24-70 kit lens from Sony. The optical performance is honest for the price, it focuses fast and it's incredibly light. No 5-star rating for the following reasons:- No 24mm, shame on you Sony.- Awkward filter size, with absolutely no reason.- No OSS, but I can live with this. This lens is great for travelling. It's unobstrusive and compact.

One reviewer asked, who is this lens for? Me for one. I mostly used this lens on my a7Rii during a month-long driving trip from NM to Washington state and back to document what we were seeing along the way. I mostly shot 18 MP JPEGs because, in my comparison to similarly composed compressed raw images using this lens, the only appreciable difference is the ability to bring out slightly more detail in dark areas of the raw files. Other lenses I own produce more detail from this 42 MP sensor raw file (e.g., 20 mm f/1.8 G) and I will continue to use these lenses whenever potentially producing art is a goal. But when my goal is to have a small walk-about travel lens to document where I have been and seen, this little gem of a lens has found a permanent place in my bag ... MoreOne reviewer asked, who is this lens for? Compact budget kit lens

Small, which is the point in a way. Good af speed when paired with a modern camera. 28mm end is wide is enough for vlogging, pity no in body stabilisation, but that the cost on small lenses, I guess. 60mm on the long end is enough for standard portrait photos. The compactness makes it discreet for street photography and tourists. Sharpness is enough, ok even on a7rii and the like, but not earth shattering. Minimum focus is acceptable, but not macro close. Nice general purpose lens. Given the choice I would rate this over, above and beyond the 28-70mm oss kit lens. And I prefer it over the zeiss 24-70mm f4 kit lens too. Just my opinion, but the size and weight of the 28-60mm is ideal for me to use when I'm not using a prime lens.

Compared with Sony Prime lenses........
9 October 2022

I did a fairly careful comparison with my FE28mm & FE55mm using both an A7R2 and an A6000. As you would expect the two Sony prime lenses were easily better when used with the A7R2 and I wouldn't bother to use the FE28-60 with that camera. The prime lenses are noticeably better with the A6000 as well but the difference is less obvious and the A6000 + FE28-60 makes a decent quality small combination to carry around when ultimate quality is not the uppermost consideration. For 'holiday snaps' the FE28-60 is perfectly adequate, especially between f4 & f8 and it is noticeably better than the A6000 16-50mm kit lens.I would like to make it perfectly clear that it was only by doing a careful comparison that the difference became clear. Taken in isolation, there is nothing obviously wrong with the images from the FE28-60 and it is probably just the difference to be expected between prime lenses and zoom lenses. My only other zoom lens is the 16-50 and it is easily better than that.

FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 Mechanical Extension Stiff / Resistant
25 June 2022

Image quality is very good. Light weight / compact lens with limited zoom range.Mechanical operation feels cheap and low quality. Mechanical operation when extending for use is stiff and resistant. Resistant / jerky feel when twisting the zoom ring. Will not get much use (definitely would not recommend).

Good enough for a Sony Alpha 1...
2 August 2021

I am amazed at how small and sharp this little lens is. I am actually using it on my Sony A1 as a walk-around lens because it is so small, yet makes great pictures. This tiny 28-60mm lens is very sharp! It find it to be significantly sharper than the Sony-Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 lens, even approaching my Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens. It is weather-sealed, has virtually no chromatic aberration, low flare, reasonable bokeh, and has linear focus motors for fast AF. Sure it is a "kit lens" but, my goodness, it's a good one. The lens was made as a kit lens for the (rather expensive) Sony A7c, so it had to be high quality. According to Sony, it is the smallest and lightest zoom lens for a 35mm camera. It is nearly pancake in size, yet has a reasonable zoom range (28-60mm). I ... MoreI am amazed at how small and sharp this little lens is. Great Small and Lightweight Lens
2 January 2022

I Just got the Sony A7IV and wanted a small and light lens to use for hiking and backpacking etc. I have been fairly impressed by the sharpness and quality of it for its size and weight. Don't expect it to match the GM lenses or anything, but for the intended use I am quite pleased. Pretty much exactly what I was looking for.Pros:Small and light (5.9 oz / 167 g)Good Sharpness/Color/Contrast etc.Quiet and fast focusingBasic weather sealingDecent zoom range (specially considering the size and weight of it)Cons:Not the best in low light (that should be expected with f/4-5.6, one should note, it's only f/4 at 28mm)Price - (better if you get it as a bundle/kit)Zoom action could be a little smoother - though, seems to be improving with some ... MoreI Just got the Sony A7IV and wanted a small and light lens to use for hiking and backpacking etc. I have been fairly impressed by the sharpness and quality of it for its size and weight. Great lens, but I am not sure who it is for
13 July 2021

This is an excellent lens, especially as a kit lens. There is a little distortion at 28 mm depending on the distance and angle from the subject and, because of the variable aperture, you can get pleasing background blur at 28 mm where the lens is at F/4 and also a 60 mm where the lens is at F/5.6. Because of the large sensor on full frame cameras, the smaller aperture is not nearly as big of a deal as I thought it would be at first.I personally think this lens is quite sharp with nice contrast and good color. Autofocus is quick, quiet, and accurate in both video and stills (it is a new native Sony lens with a linear motor after all). That said, you shouldn't buy this lens unless you know that you absolutely want the smallest zoom possible with an F/4-F/5.6. As a kit lens, yes, it's great, and I am not selling mine anytime soon. But, at full list price, I think the money could be better spent elsewhere. That is not a knock on this lens as I think Sony did an excellent job on the lens, I just don't know who this lens is actually designed for outside of needing something more compact and performant to bundle with the a7C kit.

Great super-compact full frame zoom for Sony E Mount
10 January 2022

This is a great little compact full frame Zoom for the Sony Alpha series. It's quite sharp for a kit lens with little distortion or aberration, and it's really a pancake-sized lens when retracted. 28-60 mm is a stone's throw from much larger 28-70 mm zooms, and it's perfect match for the A7C, which is what I used it with. At a standalone price at original retail, it's a bit expensive, but at the price I paid, it's a bargain. It makes the A7C a great travel/street shooter that you can keep with you all the time. A great full frame combo that's always available at hand is something one would not have thought possible even a few years ago. Excellent buy.
