This mid-range Sony zoom lens is a compact and easily portable companion for the new Sony A7 III full-frame, mirrorless camera. It is dust and moisture resistant making it ideal for wildlife photography. I have had great results with wedding shots, landscapes, and studio work all resulting in crisp, clear images across the frame.

Considering that this is a so called "kit" lens, and doesn't cost a lot, it's remarkably good.If you are just getting used to your Sony camera, this lens is more than adequate to go through that stage and somewhat beyond.Definately a good lens to learn with.

Normally I use prime lenses and stay away from zoom lenses. However, I purchased a Sony SEL2870 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 FE OSS Lens for my Sony mirrorless digital camera before my travel to Asia. It proved to be a right decision to purchase this lightweight zoom lens for my travel. This lightweight zoom went wherever I went during my travel - streets, restaurants, shopping malls, family get-togethers, hotel, and many other places. The lens produces sharp images corner to corner and the color fidelity is as good as it can get. The cost of the lens is certainly reasonable and the cost-performance is admirably good. I recommend this lens especially to those who want to travel without having heavy camera - lens equipment. I was wary about buying this lens, particularly for my A7 as the camera was relatively new to me. I was a long time Canon user and had got used to the Canon way so moving to Sony was done with some trepidation. The YouTube reviews of the lens were luke warm and I wasn't expecting very much, so it was a pleasant surprise when I first tested it out. The images were stunning. I always use my cat as the object of choice to test any new camera or lens because he's got some very fine hairs and I've got used to being able to compare the results. My last camera was a Canon 6d with some stonking prime lenses and whilst I was happy with the setup, I fancied a change to a smaller and mirrorless camera. The Sony A7 fit the bill and was relatively cheap. This lens was bought to ... MoreI was wary about buying this lens, particularly for my A7 as the camera was relatively new to me. My last camera was a Canon 6d with some stonking prime lenses and whilst I was happy with the setup, I fancied a change to a smaller and mirrorless camera. The Sony A7 fit the bill and was relatively cheap. This lens was bought to test the camera before taking the plunge on some more highly rated lenses, though I tend to rent the top end lenses when I need them. As I said, I was really surprised to see the results. I'm a pixel peeper and always like to judge the images at 100% eventhough most people won't ever see them at like that. The sharpness and resolution was as good as anything I've seen with a zoom lens on my Canon, even the more expensive ones. The colour was great too and overall I couldn't have been happier. I've included one image asan example. Don't have any hesitation in buying one of these lenses as long as you're happy with the max stop size. I couldn't recommend it more highly. I always shoot in RAW, so the attached image is a jpg version of a tif exported from Lightroom.
I purchased this in late December in a package with the new Sony a7IV because I have no other Sony lenses and wanted to use the camera over the holidays. It focuses accurately and quickly enough for family vacation photos. But on returning home and uploading the photos to computer, the corners and edges were just not nearly sharp enough to meet my minimum standards. I soon acquired Samyang's 35mm f/1.8, and I was able to compare the two lenses. Actually I found there was no comparison. The a7IV is great, and when fitted with the 35mm produces sharp photos across the entire sensor. I sold the Sony 28-70 (at a loss) and do not recommend buying it with the camera. Order one of the other great Sony lenses or top quality third party lenses instead.
I have had this lens for about two years and I am happy with it. It originally came as a kit lens with my Sony A7ll. Having had kit lenses with other cameras I really did not expect it to be all that great. After using this lens for six months it occured to me I was getting really sharp photos with very little distortion. I have seen some people knock this lens on you-tube. I believe they are either trying to sound more knowledgeable than they are or they have not really taken an objective look at the photos this lens produces. I now use this lens on my A7lll camera and it works even better on this camera. If you check Dxomark's lens evaluations you will see it rated pretty high. It isn't going to be as good as a 2000 dollar prime lens but as an all around zoom lens ... MoreI have had this lens for about two years and I am happy with it. Sony SEL 28-70mm F/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens and Hood as described. Packaging could've been better and slightly crushed. Fortunately, no issues or damages. Lens works great, thanks
First of all, this is a kit level lens, nothing more, but extremely overpriced fo the final image quality. This lens relies heavily in software post processing. It has a HUGE pincushion distortion at the 70mm end and a moderate barrel distortion at the 28mm end. If you're not shooting jpeg and if your raw development software don't have the correct lens profile for distortion and CA correction you'll be in trouble. The lens borders are very soft wide open, something I would not expect for a 3.5-4.5 lens costing almost $400.This lens performance is on par with the kit lenses from Canon and Pentax, that cost 1/3 of the price.I would not recommend it unless you're on a tight budget, but in this case you shouldn't be buying a Sony full frame camera.
As kit lenses go, this is one of the best I've used. It's both wide enough and long enough for general use. Being a kit lens its not fast, with a maximum aperture of f3.5 at 28mm, around f4.5 at 50mm and f5.6 at the 70mm end but is has stabilization (OSS), which allows for slower shutter speeds in low light without blur. However, if you want some nice bokeh, you'll have to get close to your subject. The lens is sharp, even wide open and doesn't seem to have any issues with CA. And an added bonus for a kit lens is that its weather sealed! Great little lens (actualy not that little, which is the only down side) which represents amazing value, because if you had to buy this lens on it's own, its not priced like a kit lens at £395!
Just because it's plastic doesn't mean the build quality is poor. And just because it's a kit lens, doesn't mean it's terrible. I'm pleased with mine. It's plenty sharp for 5x7,8x10 even 11x14 prints. No reason for me to print larger. It's plenty sharp for posting online and social media. Mine's well built, focusing is smooth and doesn't make a sound. The manual focus ring is large and easy to use.Great everyday lens. Great compliment to the couple of primes, a macro and a longer zoom that I have. My few knocks, probably because I'm a bit old school, I miss the focus distance and aperture markings you used to see on lenses. There's also no hard stop to focusing. Might be tricky to focus to infinity. The work around is to set the camera to DMF (direct manual focus) ... MoreJust because it's plastic doesn't mean the build quality is poor. Photographer Ken Rockwell says it best: "the Zeiss lenses are sharper if you spend your life indoors looking at the corners of zoomed-in images on computer screens, but for people who actually get out, shoot and hang one-man shows in galleries, this lens is more than sharp enough" (quote is from his review of the lens from his website)
