An excellent choice as a second lens to supplement a basic lens kit, this full-frame 28mm wide-angle prime features a bright F2.0 maximum aperture and outstanding overall optical performance. Advanced optics deliver excellent sharpness right out to the image edges plus beautifully smooth bokeh when needed. A maximum aperture of F2.0 makes it easier to shoot clear images handheld indoors or in dim lighting. An inner focus mechanism achieves stable, quiet autofocus operation that is ideal for movies as well as stills. This lens is in excellent condition with only the lightest signs of use. The optics are clean and clear with no marks or scratches. There is an extremely minor amount of dust within the lens. The lens barrel shows only the lightest cosmetic marks. The focus ring is smooth and in great condition. The lens mount is in good condition.

A Great Lens

Since this is a travel lens and I use the Canon for pro work, I want to keep an eye on the budget.Unfortunately, after trying it out for a few weeks, I just got annoyed with the field of view of this 28mm and returned it especially at this price point. I need a slightly wider lens to get both the portraits I want to do on the fly (which this 28mm is great for) but also, some street work where the wider angle will help when shooting more than one person or buildings/landscapes. (Incidentally, I am going to be trying out the Sigma 19mm 2.8 which I hope falls in that sweet spot for a travel prime. If that doesn’t work, I may just bite the bullet for the Sony 24mm 1.8.)All that said, the images came out super sharp and with an f2, it works well indoors and you can push the lower ISOs without much grain. I would totally recommend this lens. It's a bit pricey for the non-pro photographer but if you have the cash and it suits your needs, I can't imagine anyone not being happy with this purchase.

One trouble with many lenses made for full frame is their size and sometimes how noisy they are. In this case it is quiet and compact. Suitable for stills and video, blogging and events. F2 is fast enough for low light, but not as good as faster primes suited to low light. It is a good standard due to standard wide angle, so you can easily crop to slightly closer focus equivalent or use to great affect in crop mode. A nice option for aps-c cameras too, but not the cheapest option in that area. You can get this for a similar price used as the Sony 20mm f2.8 aps-c lens. But it is about the size of the Sony 50mm fe lens. Note that used price on Sony 50mm Fe is less, but it makes more noise which can be slightly annoying for video. Compact wide-angle for street photography

Not the sharpest lens around at wide open, but certainly sufficient, and it sharpens well when stopped down. I have a 24mm f1.4 G-Master which is significantly better, but also much heavier, larger and more expensive. For street shooting, this 28mm is excellent.

Excellent value for money, but soft at f/2
21 January 2019

If you are used to Leica 28mm Summicron lenses, this Sony lens is not an equivalent. But for an autofocus lens, it is really compact, making it a nice reportage lens with your full-frame Sony E mount cameras. It is soft at f/2 even in the central areas, but it draws a decent bokeh wide open, so you can do shallow DoF shots, if you are willing to apply some selective sharpening in post-processing. But stop down to f/2.8, and images become significantly sharper, like somebody flipped a switch. Obviously, the bokeh also gets a little coarser. So it is a tradeoff. By f/5.6, sharpness is achieved in nearly the entire frame. If you are shooting landscape, plan on stopping down to f/11, and using a tripod to keep the ISO down. This can be a very good landscape lens if used right, although if you want the ultimate image quality for landscapes, you need to consider a higher end lens like a Sony G Master. But for the relatively modest price, the FE 28mm f/2 lens delivers excellent value. So the 5 stars is based on a combination of its compact size/weight, optical performance, and price. But based just on optical performance, I would probably give it 3.75 stars, maybe 4 for its performance at f/2.8 and beyond.

In subdued lighting, such as an overcast sky or shooting in shadows, the images get soft at any aperture. Images were often (slightly) over-exposed. Nightshots were typically soft and unpleasing.(2) Samyang 35mm f/2.8 autofocus – excellent sharpness for still subjects. However, it did not focus well for shooting moving subjects, such as people during street photography. Night shots were usually softer than those from the Sony 28mm.(D) Back to the Sony 28mm:- (For me) 28mm is an excellent focal length- Excellent performance in a variety of settings- Light weight, compact size, and low price – this lens fulfills the promise of the mirror-less philosophy.

Sony 28mm f2 is a beast!

Im used to using telephoto style lenses and this small compact lens won me over to Sonys native line of wide-angle lenses. 28mm feels like the perfect travel lens. Great for self-portraits, video, and adding context, environment, and storytelling to an image or video. The f2 aperture is excellent for semi-lowlight areas. Here are a few photos to see bokeh and minimum focusing distance. Hopefully this is helpful to anyone looking at this lens.

Trying to look on the bright side, but...
6 April 2016

I was excited to try an in-house (Sony-only) developed lens on my A7Rii, and this lens was garnering some rave reviews. Unfortunately for me, this lens doesn't cut the mustard. The unfortunate thing about camera sensors becoming so advanced is that optical deficiencies become more immediately apparent. Comparing center-image sharpness between this lens and other primes, the 28mm f/2 just doesn't stack up, at any aperture. In my (non-scientific) experience, the 35 f/2.8 is sharper wide open than the 28 f/2 lens is at f/5.6. My gripes: -Really soft wide open -Very prone to chromatic aberration at lower apertures -SEVERE barrel distortion (see sample picture) -Pretty weak construction (not even close to weather sealed, easy pathway for dust to get into the lens ... MoreI was excited to try an in-house (Sony-only) developed lens on my A7Rii, and this lens was garnering some rave reviews. You will very rapidly exceed the limits of this lens' capabilities if your'e using a camera like the A7Rii. This lens just can't keep up with the sensor's capabilities. The whole point of a prime lens is image quality, and this lens will never deliver on that promise, even in the sweet spot of f5.6-f8. The barrel distortion was really disturbing. The first time I took a picture with straight lines in the frame, I knew this lens wouldn't work for me. It's so bad that correcting for the distortion changes this lens to more like a 31mm focal length. Not good, unless you want lomo-like picture effects straight out of your $3300 camera. Corner performance was pretty poor, which I expected at this price point. However, stepping even slightly away from the center of image, you see a dramatic reduction in image quality. Add to that this lens' propensity towards chromatic aberration, and this lens feels totally unsuitable for landscape photography.

Wonderful street lens
16 November 2022

I use this with a Sony A7C, a perfect combination of light weight and small inconspicuous size. The lens is very sharp, focuses quickly, has excellent color imaging, and is reasonably priced. I tried a different 28 first, a f1.4 lens, which was about twice the size and weight of this f2.0 lens, and while it was slightly sharper, it was far too large and heavy for street work. This Sony 28 f2.0 is now my go-to lens, along with a second A7C body and an 85mm f1.8. The perfect combination for quick street and documentary photography.

Dollar for dollar this may be the best lens in Sony's full frame line-up. I've grown increasingly frustrated with Sony, their release-a-slightly-different-version camera every six months philosophy as well as their extremely poor QC issues with many lenses (want to know how many different 24-70 f4 samples I tried and how wildly varying the results were - none of which were satisfying and I did not purchase it in the end). On the other hand, the FE 55 1.8 lives up to its legend, and while I have yet to try it, many say the Sony 85 GM edges out the superb Batis 85. In general, the Batis, Loxia, and (for APS-C) Touit lenses overall have significantly better QC.Point being, Sony is all over the map for me when it comes to the quality of their lenses. In general, the Batis, Loxia, and (for APS-C) Touit lenses overall have significantly better QC.Point being, Sony is all over the map for me when it comes to the quality of their lenses. I'll never purchase a lens they make when first released (even if badged with the ZA designation - Sony is still responsible for 90% of that). I made that mistake with the original, cheap FE 50 1.8.This lens however, is fantastic, and from all the positive reviews I've read, QC and sample variation is not even close to the issue it is on many other lenses. Construction is good, feels solid and yet is not heavy - balances better with an APS-C camera than a full frame actually. I don't much care for the filter threads, which make it nearly impossible to install a polarizing filter (unless you already have a UV or some other kind of filter installed).Image quality is wonderful across the board. Focus is fast even in low light and minimum focus distance is surprisingly short, just shy of one foot. All in all, there isn't much to complain about here. I could nitpick here and there, and I could talk about how Fuji continues to dominate with their lenses when it comes to quality and price (most of their primes are the same or near the same as this lens - one of the cheapest FE offerings, and Sony's line up comes nowhere near Fuji in across-the-board IQ). But in the end, if you have a Sony system, particularly full frame though due to the low cost and small weight/size of this lens, APS-C as well - do yourself a favor and pick one of these up.

[Rewarded Review] Very good low-light lens
31 December 2018

I bought the lens for low-light landscape, cityscape and architecture photography. And for video capture in less ideal lighting conditions. The sharpness and picture quality is great -- it is top all over the frame at f4-f8 or f11. It slightly has softer edges at f2 or f22 however that is by no means a problem from my subjective view. Vignetting and distortion is definitely existent when wide open but if shooting RAW you will anyway run a photo through an editor and it can be corrected easily. And for video capture in less ideal lighting conditions. The sharpness and picture quality is great -- it is top all over the frame at f4-f8 or f11. Ideally the lens should be used with a camera body that offers in-camera stabilization because the lens itself has no built-in stabilization. It is an AF autofocus lens and reacts fast (but you need to take into consideration that it depends on the camera model as well.Altogether this is a lens well worth the investment.
