Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G Lens

Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G Lens Key Features Designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations, this lens features a robust and intuitive-to-handle physical design to benefit both photography and cine applications. This 50mm lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras; however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length. Aspherical elements are incorporated into the optical design and feature superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering. Extra-low dispersion element is featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality. Two XD Linear Motors, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting. A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings. Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications. Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures. Rounded 7-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

A Sharp Prime Lens in a Lightweight Body

I was looking to round out my set of lenses with a nifty fifty. I have a Zeiss 35 2.8, a Zeiss 85 1.8, and a Sony 24-105 4.0 for my Sony a7Riii. I'm not disappointed with my purchase of the Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G. This lightweight prime is great for walking around; more importantly, it's optical performance is all that I could ask for in this price range. I'm not a pixel peeper. All I know is that this lens delivers sharp, pleasing images. The attached photo is the first one I acquired with this lens in my back yard. As always, the purchase experience and quick delivery from B&H was very satisfactory.

After 50mm GM,The best prime lens in middle range.

I bought it a month ago, and love it. it gives me incredibly sharp photos with nice details. I highly recommend it for portrait and food photography. There is a weakness: The Eye-Start AF option doesn't work with this lens in APS-C cameras.

Excellent build, super sharp, extremely small

The quality of this lens is fantastic. Its an all metal lens, and i love the aperture ring and programmable button on it. It is super small and light, and most importantly, the image quality will not disappoint. Focus is fast and silent too.

Excellent for video with its balance of features & price
20 September 2021

I use this lens on the Sony a7III for filming interviews and for gimbal work that is mildly telephoto. I'm content with the bokeh that I get at f/2.5 and am happy to make the trade-off from lenses that have higher maximum apertures, but are significantly larger and heavier. It's so tiny and light that I will always have it in my bag or pocket, regardless of how light I'm wanting to work. I appreciate its iris ring for its ability to make smooth adjustments while filming live video. Highly recommended, as long as maximum bokeh isn't your top priority. For that I'd go with the Sony 50mm f/1.2. However, I just don't want to carry it around.

A SONY quality 50mm lens with a bonus UV filter. This compact prime lens fits my needs exactly. It can handle group shots of social events where space is often limited. It is ideal for scenic views as well and it is lightweight.

Sharp and Lightweight

Comparing the Sony G 50mm f/2.5 lens to my collection of 50mm lenses, I found it to be unique by exceeding them in sharpness while at the same time weighing less than most. This is achieved by keeping the aperture modest and taking advantage of the latest in lens technology for mirrorless cameras. So this is the lens to take out on a long hike or journey. But it also excels in most other situations, even interior shots or twilight scenes (see the attached photos, taken hand-held at f/5.6 with my A7III). My standard 49mm CPL filter is too thick to fit behind/inside Sony's unusual hood. When mounted in front, it becomes fully exposed to the elements. It also captures a wide swath of direct sunlight, whichscatters at the polarizing plastic foil. To have better protection for the filter, I bought the 49mm Sensei PRO Aluminum hood from B&H. It fits on top of the filter without vignetting.

The size won me over.
14 November 2021

I use this lens on the A7III. I bought this lens because of the size. It's such a small light lens. The reason I went with this and not the cheaper 50mm 1.8 was because I used the cheaper canon 50mm 1.8 and I really disliked that lens for the chromatic aberrations . So I didn't even want to try the Sony 50mm 1.8. I don't mind paying more for a lens that's better optically. The reason I didn't purchase the 50mm 1.2 GM lens is because of the size. I wanted a small lens that was good and so far this has been a good choice for me. My example photos do have some lightroom post processing to them so it's not straight out of camera examples but examples regardless. I would recommend this lens if you want small. Thebokeh is fine at 2.5 I don't regret not having a 1.8 or 1.2.

This lens is spectacular!

Already have the Sigma 45, which really delivers, except when focusing close at maximum aperture. The Sony FE 50/2.5 produces extremely sharp images, even at close focus and wide open. Also, when shooting in manual, focusing is linear -- that's a big deal and a time saver. If Sony were to extend this line of compact lenses to include an 85, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Works Great on my Sony a7rii, Great Resolution!
15 May 2021

Just got the lens today so took a few images around the house. Had to downsize them for best buy. But the resolution on my 42mp camera seemed great. Fairly quick to focus. Video was fine. I've tried different lenses around the same mm. Have tried the Sony 50mm 1.8, 55 1.8, Canon 50mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4 (adapted to Sony). There is no question that the 55mm is just slightly sharper (but not by much), and faster, but I use my 85mm 1.8 mostly for portraits. I find the 50mm 2.5 is quick, small and wonderful for a carry around lens. I will throw that in my bag along with the tamron 20mm and sony 85mm and be all set in a small package.
