A lot of missed focus images You just think that Af locked in the right place, where you locked it , but not, the picture is out of focus. 30-40% unusable images, the AF starts to search and just doesn't work. I don't know if maybe with an special setting in my camera the problem disappears, but believe me I tried everything. AF S, AF C, AF, A , focus priority settings, Turn on setting effect and off , Turn off phase detection and every combination on AF settings and the problem persist. Be aware of this system if you are gonna use it in studio I already spent thousands and thousands and just don't know what i'm going to do.

I was super nervous at first to rent a completely new body and lens. I decided to jump in and if it didn’t work, it didn’t work. Amazingly this has been the best experience I could’ve asked for. I was offered this as a comparable lens.I intentionally didn't order this lens because it has some glaring weaknesses when considering some edge cases. However, chief among them is its autofocus. It can be competent at times, but I regularly missed eye focus and was caught tracking an ear or something instead. I chalk this up to its focus speed more than anything. It could have properly focused at first, but if the subject moved between that moment and the shutter, the plane of focus didn't shift fast enough. This lens replaced a much loved f1.4 85mm A mount that I was using with the LA-EA5 adapter on my Sony A7R4, pleased it did as this one is sooooo much better in every respect which I was doubtful of, it certainly is deserving of the G Master badge & reputation! Focusing is really fast, bokeh is delicious & even wide open images are sharp. Build feels solid & weather sealing is a must have on lenses. Aperture ring clicks in increments & internal focusing is smooth & precise. This is my absolute favourite lens & bonus, it's not too heavy as a walkaround. With the A7R4 I can switch to APSC mode giving me 127mm reach, very useful feature of the camera meaning I can use this lens as more than an 85mm prime. All in all I love this lens, it's superb.
Yes, I realize the newest sexiest Sony 85mm has just dropped, but the OG can still bring it! For the pro work: is a fantastic portrait lens. Is my favorite lens for b-cam on video interviews. For the fun stuff: lets just say my dog pics on Reddit and the 'gram just got a major upgrade! Can't wait to find new stuff to shoot with this!
I first bought this lens because I got a discount and then I was still waiting for my camera to go with it. My A7 IV finally arrived so I could take the lens for a test drive. It is fair to say that this is the oldest in the GMaster series of Sony lenses, therefore its focus speed is not the fastest and it's quite loud (but that's compared to other Sony lenses, it's not all that noisy). The image rendition and sharpness is still excellent, not to mention its beautiful colour rendition which is typical for all the GMaster lenses. It's a great feature because if you choose to use several GMaster lenses in a photoshoot, there would hardly be any difference in colours among them. I also have to appreciate its bokeh. It’s a GM, it’s 1.4, it’s fantastic. But it’s big, heavy and expensive. You can save $1200 by getting the Sony 85mm 1.8, an amazing lens that rivals the GM. That 2/3 stop difference is nice, but it’s not $1200 nice. The 1.8 is significantly smaller and lighter too. It’s very hard for me to recommend this lens when the Sony 85mm 1.8 exists for $1200 less. You can take that $1200 and buy another lens.

I bought this lens along with my A7 Mark II something like 8 years ago and to this day this is my goto lens with my A7 Mark IV. I’m not sure I will ever find a better lens than this one and I’m saying that owning multiple GMaster lenses!! Sony really out did themselves and made something special with this one!! For beginners…. I can’t recommend this as your first lens but should definitely be your second or maybe third addition to your arsenal. First lens should be a 24mm-70mm lens or a 70-200mm lens those are both pretty well rounded lenses.
