Sony HVL F60RM Flash

The Sony HVL-F60RM Wireless Radio Flash enables you to create unique lighting set-ups by teaming it up with other flash units via the built-in 2.4 GHz radio transceiver. This flash is compatible with P-TTL / ADI metering cameras. You can use the flash a commander or remote. This flash can work with 15 flash units in 5 groups and can access up to 14 channels. The Advanced Distance Integration ensures balanced output by measuring subject-to-camera distance. It has a guide number of 197 feet at ISO 100 and 105mm. You can pan the flash head in 180° and tilt it from -8° to 150°. The flash has two memory settings to remember previously used parameters and recall them instantly. As the flash is updated with new algorithms and materials, it offers resistance to overheating due to extended usage. The dust- and moisture-resistant design allows you to use the flash in inclement weather.

I liked this flash when I first got it a month ago but feel seriously let down after using it. Its big bulky and the head is so loose that its near enough impossible to use light modifiers. The head does not lock and so moves about on its own after the slightest movement. there are lots of flashguns available at a fraction of the cost of this one with better facilities and with a locking flash head. At the asking price of this flash it should be perfect and it isn't and far from it. I tested this one at the side of a Nissan Di700A using a Seconic flash meter there appear very similar in power output, the Nissan has a locking head and facilities are very similar at a price nearly a quarter of this one from Sony. Excellent Flash Setup
13 August 2023

I rented this flash, the HVL-F45RM flash, the Sony FA-WRC1M commander and a light stand for a wedding shoot. It all worked out perfectly, and I couldn’t be happier. The whole kit arrived early so I was able to get used to the units and get them to working just the way I needed. Thanks LensRentals!!!

This flash works really as tested with my A7RIV. The quality is very high, and I'm glad I bought it. Previously I was using Godox speed lights and this is night and day better.Benefits:* Super easy to use.* Great user interface (buttons, screen, etc) in comparison to Godox.* Accurate TTL.* Really nice snap on color filters and defuser.* Easy to update firmware (make sure you update as it shipped with the original 1.0 when the current is 2.01 as of this review).Ways Sony can improve it:* Price. It's expensive for what it is. I'm used to cheap Godox flashes.* Optional lithium ion battery like Godox. Maybe even use the sony Z battery?* I wish both pivots had a locking feature. Something simple like having to squeeze the pivot in order to move ... MoreThis flash works really as tested with my A7RIV. The quality is very high, and I'm glad I bought it. My guess is it will be fine, but if moving around very fast it's possible the Mag Mod could cause the flash to pivot unexpectedly. I'll need to test and update the review. I suspect it is a non issue.

Getting Closer but Not Quite There
25 November 2018

They made some great improvements with this version of the Sony Flash. The biggest thing is the host shoe actually seems to be built sturdier. I will only know over time but it 100% appears to be built to hold the weight of the flash better. However, this flash unit seems to have a softer click meaning that the effort or weight it holds before it moves or spins is less than the previous model. This means that any weight from Modifiers like the Mag Mod easily cause the unit to spin and move instead of hold into position. So cant quite give it 5 starts but still love the little guy.

News "Flash"
3 February 2019

This flash is a greatly improved version of the previous flash HVL-F60M. The "full metal jacket" of a hot shot connector foot and the "lock & load" mechanisms alone are worth the price. Because it was on sale, I got it for the same price as the older version which I purchased over 4 years ago. The menu is more user-friendly and I can get to my favorite setting more quickly. Linking this flash is also easier, it links seamlessly with a second F60RM flash that I purchased last month, plus it's backwards compatible with my F60M flash.

Quite good but not perfect
21 January 2020

I use my HVL-F60RM daily and leave it mounted on my Sony Alpha7RIII. It's battery live is not very long. Also, the Sony multi On off switch is so small and inconvenience to operate. You must have long finger nails to operate it effectively. The flash calculate flash intensity accurately and calibrate well with the lens setting and distances. On balance, the F60RM is very good but needs a few improvements.

Sony HVL-F60RM Flash

I am very happy with the performance of the HVL-60RM. The flash works great as a receiver and with the wireless flash commander. I had no problems with overheating during a family photo shoot. Myfavorite is the level adjustment buttons on the back of the flash. I love the smaller size, and the head spins and tilts. This is an amazing flash that is easy to rotate for portrait orientation. In my opinion the TTL metering overexposes the photos, so be ready to lower the power as needed. The menu is simple and quick to get to, and I can get to my favorite setting more quickly. I am planning to purchase another one HVL-60RM. I highly recommended.

Looking for the do all flash ? This is it. Comes with a built in video light ( you control the light output ) adjustable flash head and is ready for heavy duty work. Weddings , Milestone Birthday party's. , Baby showers , Graduations etc: yeah it's expensive but pays for itself after the first job.
