Amazing! True miracle! Comparison with Sennheiser HD600 headphones connected to an audio mixer (by wire, not Blutooth), the MDR-1000X headphones have more low-mid, using the mixer's EQ. HD600 is semi-open back, so has more "air" and maybe more top to its sound, which is to be expected, comparing open and closed back. Detail-wise there's little in it and the ears soon adjust; with the HD600 only winning if there's some ultra-low frequency bass in the music. Another trick of the MDR-1000X is the 2 mode bypass button, that allows either reduced volume ambient sound through, or with bass and low-mid removed, for hearing speech. I have dificulty holding a conversation in a noisy pub, as I can't filter out against a high level of background sound. Don't know if I'd have the courage to use my MDR-1000s as a kind of hearing aid! This feature does work at the gym, which has music at near nightclub volume. Suddenly it's possible to overhear speech from the other side of the large rooms, though without actually being able to make out what's being said. I'm confident, in a pub situation though, conversation would be possible which previously would have lead to me leaving early. So, a versatile true hi-fi piece of gear. Lovely sound, sound enhancement engine, wireless. Oh and they look great.

They came neatly folded inside the case and ready to go with some charge in the battery. This is a problem competing ANC headphones have a tough time coping with, as the low tones required of ANC can drown out bass and highs in some cases.For the past few weeks I have used them, they have been stellar. The sound quality is great, the noise cancelling unparalleled, and the battery lasts for a surprisingly long time (about a week when used for commuting to and from work and for studying at home). The touch controls are very easy to get used to although I occasionally find myself skipping tracks when I meant to change the volume. This is probably since I'm still not very familiar with the controls, but it feels very refreshing to swipe for volume changes etc. rather than have to press buttons. The conversation feature by holding the right earcup is very handy to have although I don't find myself using it very often. I never have any issues with it when I do use it.Bluetooth connection has been very strong. On busy trains I've had about two connection bumps in total over the last 3 weeks of daily usage, where the sound cut out for a split second and then returned, but never a complete disconnection or severe disruption. Compared to other bluetooth headphones this is wonderful, and the quality always makes me forget I don't have a wire tethering me to the device. Once paired with your device, the headphones connect instantly when you switch them on, which is very handy and stress free.One downside/annoyance I have had with these headphones is that the left earcup has a creaky frame. When moving my head left and right, I can sometimes hear something creaking in the body of the headphone in my left ear. This also happens when pressing the Sony logo just next to the hinge of the headband. If the headphones are on tight enough or I'm sitting relatively still, it's not a major issue, and I've learnt to ignore it (just like you would ignore wire friction and tapping in wired headphones). It is still an annoyance though and I wish I could figure out a way to remove it, by perhaps screwing a screw tighter or something. This is apparently a widespread issue but no word from Sony on the matter yet.The last downside is the lack of information on charging the headphones. They come with a micro-USB cable but no charging brick. I have heard from internet threads that Sony has advised to only charge the headphones through the USB ports on a computer, as connecting via a charger directly to the wall can damage them. This has been really inconvenient for me as the headphones take a 3-4 hours to charge, and I need to keep waking up my laptop to supply power to the USB port, so I have resorted to using an iPhone charger and have had no issues. If you are going to use a charging brick connected to the mains, take care and use a reliable one and remember Sony isn't responsible if you mess something up. Not ideal on Sony's behalf to exclude a charging brick but it'll have to do.Overall these headphones are phenomenal design-wise, feature-wise and sound-wise. The build quality is superb compared to competitors but I would love that left earcup to stop creaking. Battery-life is exceptional but charging options are confusing and anxiety-inducing considering these are pricey headphones. Noise cancelling is fantastic and nowadays I can't bear to step on a train without these headphones on - my ears require the silence! This is a purchase I'd recommend to anyone. The touch features on the right headphone are said to be a bit iffy but like with such things the start/stop may need tapping twice, but it does work and the right 'cupping' gesture to allow announcements to come through is brilliant. Yes, it has more than a few mics on it for assessing the environment and it will also allow you to take calls though I haven't tested that yet. Speaking with music muted (using the right 'cupping' gesture was very natural.I'm glad I waited for this.Improvement Points: Will be a tad expensive for many but frankly, worth it. Also, be aware that ears will feel hot if the plane/train is not air-conditioned well, but it is very comfortable overall. On my outbound journey I did find myself getting a bit fatigued towards the end. While it is difficult to determine whether this was caused by the pressure of the headphones on my ears or the "cabin pressure" effect associated with noise cancelling headphones, I think it was mostly the former, as these headphones are understandably designed to keep a tight seal around your ears.Lately the only problem I am experiencing in this area is that the frames of my glasses get pushed into my head by the headphones' pads, causing a bit of discomfort after extended periods.They are incredibly light, have batteries that last forever and a day, and pack up very compactly.- Noise Cancellation:This is far more effective on lower frequencies than I anticipated, all the way down to rumbles that intuitively seem impossible to remove. The sound of the baby that is screaming in the row behind you, however, still leaks in a bit.When the NC is getting punished there is a perceived hit to the dynamic range of the audio (aka "squash"). I'll be the first to admit that this is hard to quantify, but it seems more apparent over Bluetooth than wired.While the NC is quite impressive, even the Sony MDR-1000X can't escape the technology's kryptonite: sudden changes in pressure often found in isolated systems.Basically, anything that would cause your ears to pop will confuse the NC circuit which in turn will produce a "fluttering" effect, which can in certain cases lead to physical discomfort. I found this phenomenon to be a showstopper on the London subway and when riding the city bus (long distance buses where I live are a bit sturdier and so don't cause this issue). Yes, you can easily turn off the NC whenever you're in a problematic environment, but if you're thinking about spending a bit extra on noise cancelling headphones to primarily use on the tube to work, you should think twice.A last note on noise cancellation (which, just to be clear, applies to products with this functionality in general): wind is not your friend. I had a romantic vision of me wooshing down the street on my bike, relying on the ambient sound mode to avoid certain death. That was before I realised how allergic microphones are to wind.- Bluetooth:Bluetooth sucks. I'm not talking about the odd audio drop that inevitably occurs. When you have experienced the clarity these headphones provide when hooked up with a cable, using them with Bluetooth feels like someone has put a blanket over your head. Yes, Sony has a proprietary codec that sports a higher bitrate (called LDAC), but unless you own an Xperia phone you're out of luck and have to join me in the aptX camp. This is not a big issue, but I still find myself going wired on longer journeys.- Fancy Functionality:The tap and swipe gesture panel works well, though you need to be fairly precise to avoid mistakes. After two weeks of regular use, however, I find myself getting irritated with the time it takes to trigger the on-demand ambient sound mode (activated by cupping the right ear with your hand). In the lab where I hide out there are quite a few high pitched noises that make the "ambient sound: voice" mode impractical to use. The ~1 second delay of the on-demand trigger means that I end up saying "huh?", "sorry?", "what?" a lot.Speaking of switching, changing between the noise cancelling and ambient sound modes using the discrete buttons does take a couple of seconds, with the unit fully disengaging and then re-engaging NC every time.When they are turned completely off the headphones will still function passively, but the volume level is quite a bit lower than when powered on.But this has been an exercise in nit-picking. I am very happy that I bought the MDR-1000X, and I think you will be too. The feeling of complete auditory isolation, the build quality, and the extremely concise bass response these headphones offer more than make up for any quirks of the technology that I have mentioned. I just want you to be aware of what you are getting yourself into.

I paid the difference and upgraded myself to these Sony cans and WOW, am I impressed. I sat on the first night just changing through lots of different genres of songs and trying to get the most out of them, I love the noise cancellation I think it does really well compared to it's rivals as one is able to turn this function off instead of it being an "always on function". The different ambient sound functions are also great, one amplifying the voices of friends/family and the other setting "normal" being better to listen to outside noise and hear what's going on around you.I think the design is great, and they certainly feel ... The materials used are also very lovely and feel high quality which is always something I look for when buying headphones at this price range.I do however think that the sound insulation could have been a lot better as when I was listening to music at around half the volume on my iPhone friends could say that they could make out the melody and when turned up slightly further lyrics were able to be heard.Portability wise they are nice and compact when travelling and can always go around ones neck if not folded up. They feel tight around the ears but not too tight, however I would recommend that one does not listen to music for too longer periods as they can become slightly uncomfortable for extended listening periods as they tend to grasp a bit too tightly over time.I thought that it would be a pain having to connect up the bluetooth and disconnecting but I've found it's easy and very fast.

When wired they sound better than practically any other available pair of headphones unless you shoot for a pair of dedicated studio monitors or high end wired headphones which can easily run anywhere from $100 dollars to well over $500 and even higher depending on the brand, build quality, and specifications. The MDR-1000x are well balanced, not too bass heavy and not too tinny as well as being extremely comfortable for long periods. that said, you can get better sounding headphones if you simply want dedicated Hi-res headphones (which these are Hi-res) and if you like more bass focused headphones you may want to look elsewhere.As far as ... They feature the sony name, but only faintly imprinted on the head band making it invisible from any sort of distance. The all black or tan finish on them makes them look more adult, or professional. If you feel that you want more brand recognition or want others to think you spent money on your cans, get bose, or beats, or any other brand that charges you to advertise for them. The only visible marking on these is the NFC logo on the left cup.if you want some multipurpose headphones, with great hi-res sound quality, with great Bluetooth connectivity, possibly the best noise cancelling, and comfort, you'd be hard pressed to beat these. yes there are definitely better sounding headphones out there, but as far I know there are no headphones that sound this good wired, this good over Bluetooth and are noise cancelling.There are some nitpicks though. These include a carrying case, but the case doesn't have room inside for the included cable, instead it has an outside pocket that you pretty much have to tear off to fit the cable inside of. Also the cable itself is wonderful, but it seems like sony designed the 3.5mm port on the headphones themselves in such a way that generic 3.5mm cables won't fit in it. The supplied cable clicks in the jack and makes a tight, snug fit. The other 3.5mm cables I own won't do this. They simply fall out. I'm not sure if its a defect with my set or an intentional design but I can see this being very annoying if I ever lose this cable.Another minor problem is the joints in the set are indeed somewhat noisy. I can't hear them move when I'm actively listening to music or audio, but If I move my head too much I can occasionally hear a dull creak during lulls in songs or breaks between them. its extremely minor though in my experience. I have worn these often while walking through an urban setting, deaf to the world around me, and its during these outdoor walking periods that its the worst, when my head is constantly in motion and the sun is on the plastic, but even then its a minor issue only made apparent between songs and with some focusing on the sound.In short, unless you want dedicated Hi res monitors and/or don't want to drop 300+ on a set of headphones, you will want these. They do pretty much everything you'd want a pair of headphones to do, and they do them very well.

Sony claims 20 hours of battery life with continuous, wireless music playback, but I haven't proved this claim. I've used them for several hours at a stretch, and it didn't take very long to charge them afterward. I suspect Sony's battery life claim is probably accurate. You do have to charge them through a USB connection from you computer.I would have given a 5-star rating but for two things: you may think this is picky, but the headphones while not heavy are not light either. They feel substantial and have some weight. They felt fine on me, but my wife who is smaller than me felt the headphones were just a touch heavy on her head. Part of that may have been that she's not used to using headphones for any reason. The other item is the instructions are not written but rather given in sequences of drawings (good drawings) to explain how to do this or that. I figured things out without too much difficulty, but a little written instruction along with some of the drawings would have been perfect.

And while there are caveats to keep in mind, they really are outstanding.The noice cancellation is quite advanced. In my home office, I have a white noise maker which was always on in the background when I tested the headphones. When noise cancellation turns on (which it always does, by default, when you press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds), you are greeted by a female voice (of Japanese descent) that the headphones have turned on and that noise cancellation is on. What's nice about such cancellation is that there's another Ambient Sound button (accompanied with same female voice) that allows for ambient noise in, or -- in the case of airports and like areas -- voice sounds in (likely separating the typical human voice frequencies from others).Regarding noice cancellation, while you can take your right hand and touch and hold on top of the right earmuff, this does temporarily suspend cancellation, but it does not pause any music you might be listening to.As a crazy preorderer for the iPhone 7 Plus, I did get the phone in time to be able to test on the earphones. Pairing was nearly flawless and completely seamless; turn iPhone Bluetooth on, go under Bluetooth in Settings, select the aptly-named set of headphones, and you're connected. From that point forward, simply turn iPhone Bluetooth on, turn on headset, and you're paired in under 3 seconds. On top of this, when you're connected over iOS 10 on iPhone 7, the Bluetooth icon includes its own power meter next to it, so you're able to see at a glance how much power you have in the headset (the female voice mentions the power level at power off on the headset as well).Now on to the actual sound itself.Anyone who knows what they're talking about in the sound industry will tell you that, when it comes to sound, you have to either be born with the gift of hearing frequencies or you have to learn how to deal with different frequencies so that you know how to best operate something like a sound board or post-production mixer. As a semi-professional volunteer camera director for one of the top 10 churches in America, I'm surrounded by production folks, so I get this. For those strictly in the consumer space who have no idea what I'm talking about, there's really no need to read further; they are great headsets and you won't go wrong with them. For those who can't stand your sound mix being screwed up, read on.On the negative, this is distinctly a Sony headset. Their sound field is all over this headset. Personally, I prefer Infinity speakers over any other type; they simply reproduce the truest sound to my ears. Having said this, this headset is fully Sony, so if you're a Sony connoisseur, these are for you.In my head, the Sony sound field is biased towards the lower end of the frequency range. There is no way that I've found to change this -- maybe giving higher frequencies a bit more prominence in the sound field. However, the overall sound is well put together, and neither high nor low tones damage the efficacy of the reproduction in any way. In fact, I do appreciate the lowest frequency reproduction; I can almost feel the vibrations in my head when it comes to things such as dubstep!On the positive side, Sony has more than adequately reproduced the full sound spectrum with this headset. While I'm sure this has everything to do with noice cancellation (remember, these are my first consumer set of noise-cancelling headphones), I was able to pick up on nuances in songs that I already knew that I hadn't picked up before. Very nice stuff.Also, regarding volume and track control, it's literally as simple as swiping a finger vertically up or down (volume) or horizontally front or back (track) on the right earmuff (iPhone confirms changes).At the time of this review, I haven't had a chance to check out dealing with phone calls, but expect that to be just as intuitive.Bottom line? In spite of the fact that I have a personal sound field preference to another speaker maker, this Sony headset has instantly become my new, go-to headset for my iPhone and other devices. It does include a standard USB charger as well as a 3.5 inch jack in those cases that Bluetooth isn't available (such as that new iPhone 7!). I definitely recommend it.

So when you are in airplane and someone talk at you while you are watching movie with NC, it automatically stops NC and turn down the volume of sound so that you can hear the person talking to you.So conclusion,I though SONY MDR-1000X is winning on the NC and Spec& function, BOSE QC35 is winning on the comfortableness of putting on the headphone.It is $50 higher price than BOSE QC35 but it is definitely worth paying $50 more if you like the feature and spec.
