After a few years my old iPod classic was starting to play up ( more than it ever did before ), and not wanting to buy the Touch decided on this Sony as it's happy to work with iTunes via its' own transfer software ( more about that at the end ). I've yet to try them on a plane but I'm expecting good things from them. Plent of settings to mess with sound-wise. VPT surround sound really opens up the sound, and coupled with the equaliser allows you to fine tune the unit to your own preference. The bluetooth is excellent, so much so that I've added a bluetooth receiver to my home stereo. Battery life is very good, even when playing back hi res files via bluetooth.The only reason I've dropped a star is because of the transfer software. It's a bit, well, basic, and sometimes I'm having to separate the albums it decides to join together. E.G. you may find albums that are labelled Greatest Hits all end up lumped together regardless of the artist. You can search via artist on the unit itself so it's not a real biggie, but I just like my albums tidy.

I reformatted the card, made sure I had the latest firmware and scanned all my MP3s for errors and had at it again, still the same thing. I got a certain number of songs loaded up and then at some point the player decided that it did not want to recognize them. I fought with this thing for a few days, read countless forums and watched several videos because the manual was a joke. It makes no sense how in 2017 the proprietary protocols are so high with certain products that it removes all the fun and simplicity and you have got to be aGenomics Technician to format and load songs onto an MP3 player. I went back to my 10-year old iPod classic, where I can play videos, view pictures and play music without half the hassle. Maybe it's a perfect player for other people but this thing was a perpetual headache for me, or maybe it was just a bad unit, but it did everything else great, it's just that the way it deals with external Micro SD cards was obviously faulty. I reviewed higher end units and they all have their bugs. Funny how these technology companies will gladly take your money but can't seem to make their famed and esteemed gadgets work beyond planned obsolescence. Remember when listening to music was as easy as pressing PLAY on a cassette or dropping a needle? Digital is a beautiful demon.

I am already a Sony Walkman fan and already have the NWZ-X1060 which is superb. However it does not have Bluetooth and using a Bluetooth dongle is not always ideal. So I bought the NW-A35 specifically for its Bluetooth capabilities. I am SO disappointed and have considered returning it but have left it a bit late to do so. The touch screen is also very basic compared to the NWZ-X1060 in that you have to push a button to see it unlike the NWZ-X1060 is touch sensitive. I can live with these minor shortcomings but the Bluetooth sound setting problem is a deal breaker. Sony please fix it.

So this purchase was a replacement/upgrade of my venerable Sony NWZ S618F that I purchased in October of 2007 - from B&H of course - and have been using almost daily since that time. My trusty NWZ S618F has been on airplanes from coast-to-coast with me many times and has never faltered. Used with my Bose noise cancelling headphones, it doesn't get any better on an airplane with crying and screaming kids. The sound quality of the A35 is excellent as only Sony can make it. Highs are clear and the bass is solid but unintrusive ? just the way I like it. Never had that problem with my Sony S618F which would auto shut down to preserve the battery life if it was left in standby for more than 24 hrs. Furthermore boot-up times of the A35 is very slow compared to the instant power on of the S618F and there is a very annoying lag when you switch between tracks while the unit is playing. Greatest plus for the A35 is that it is expandable. I have a 128GB micro SD card and have had no problems accessing tracks stored on it. Transferring tracks to the unit is a breeze and you don't need any special software to do so. Comparisons are inevitable and after a couple months use of the A35, the S618F still is, in my humble opinion, one of the best MP3 players ever made by Sony. Unfortunately Sony no longer has a similar sized portable player with the sound processing and convenience features of my 10 year old S618F, which still works just fine, but only runs for about 6-8hrs on a full charge (down from the over 30hrs when it was new). Finally accessories are limited - you can't even pruchase a proper belt clip for the A35, which, along with a neat little docking station, I have for the S618F.

There is a Mac helper app, but this is reaaallyyy sllooowwww, and basically no use if copying a large quantity of music (the player can take 64gb card. This would take days to do with the helper app!). There is no searchand who you have 64gb of music, it is fairly essential. Battery life isok. It will go a few days. Great walkman that basically looks brand new. Plays my FLAC files and the battery, so far, lasts all day. It even hooks up to my car via its USB port. Fantastic little device that I have on me everyday. Bluetooth functionality also works well enough to connect to my DAC that is in the living room. I enjoy the clean and simple OS and UX and purchased this specific model because it does not run on Android and instead utilizes Sony's proprietary OS.

This new walkman does have a touch screen but I don't think it's that much of a deal-maker and OCD types won't like yet another screen full of fingerprints. Supplemented with a microSD card there's plenty of memory for those High Res Audio albums and the sound is as good as Sony ever is.Bluetooth is essential and the set-up on this player is quick and easy. To my partial delight the volume issue with a few of the Bluetooth speakers was fixed! The older Walkman allows control of ALL the speakers so I don't see why Sony can't fix this problem. My guess is that only the latest Sony Bluetooth speakers can be expected to work - but why should you need to buy new ones? Perhaps this is a deliberate policy by Sony to make you buy their own BT speakers and headphones? If it is then I for one am not impressed hence the product looses two stars. Come on Sony get it fixed and support industry standards!

I've put a 400GB SanDisc MicroSD card in it and understand it will take 2TB cards once they reach the market. The transfer software is a lot easier than iTunes as there are several ways to move items from the iMac to the Walkman.It is strange that it has a unique socket/cable - a standard USB would be handy and avoid having different cables. Perhaps the cable is faster than USB. It certainly transfers quickly!The screen resolution is sharp and clear. Navigation around the interface is quite intuitive and easy. The only other option was the Aux cable, which had poor sound quality. When I stopped my engine, the player kept playing.
