I'm a huge Zeiss fan and this one, lake many other I had in the past, didn't disappoint. The lens is built like a tank and feels undestructable. Razor sharp at 1.4. Micro contrast is superb and those who shoot with Zeiss know what I'm referring to. After I switched from Canon to Sony, I am using only Zeiss primes...all of them are simply incredible. I think this 50 is a pure winner!

I spent much more time than was necessary in selecting this lens. Ultimately, the three contenders were the 55 mm 1.8 Sony lens, Sigma 50 1.4 art lens, and this one. I also looked into several manual focus lenses that had possibilities but eliminated them on the grounds that they may have hampered situations where autofocus was near essential to get the shot. Ultimately, right or wrong, I eliminated the sigma based on several reviews but mostly because it was not a native Sony lens. It is a great pick and if I were not so brand loyal would be in my kit.Now the decision is between the crispness of a 1.4 versus a 1.8, one lens, the 1.8 being older than the 1.4, the 1.4 being allegedly louder then the 1.8 and, a good difference in price. I can hear the motor, because I was looking to see if I could hear the motor due to other peoples reviews - but it is fine - not an issue - no second thoughts here. The weight of the lens is also OK by me. it is not my heaviest lens by any stretch of the imagination. The construction of the lens is very good. And, the pictures I’ve taken are very sharp. I will keep this lens. It is great. I had it out all day yesterday. I am looking and hoping that there are some discounts before February 1st, 2021.

The Sony Zeiss 50mm F 1.4 Planar is a superior lens. It gives you GREAT detail in image quality and even when wide open at 1.4 it is SUPER sharp! The click less aperture control is superb when it comes to shooting video. HOWEVER there is always a flaw in any product and for this one in particular that was the weight and size of the lens itself. I was severely disappointed in the fact that the engineers from Sony/ Zeiss put into account the size when it comes to mounting it to the Sony A7 series. The diameter of the lens is very wide so if you have a quick release plate mounted to your camera you will need to set that back a significant amount in order to mount the lens. (sorry Sony and Zeiss but you did screw that part up) Also the weight of the lens is a bit much ... MoreThe Sony Zeiss 50mm F 1.4 Planar is a superior lens. (sorry Sony and Zeiss but you did screw that part up) Also the weight of the lens is a bit much compared to the body of the camera. I have noticed that due to the weight (front heavy) you cannot really mount it on your tripod and have a peace of mind when you are not manning it. Also because of the quick release placement on your camera body you can't really even the weight out on your tripod. Of course you can get a cage to resolve this problem but thats more added weight and of course MORE money you will have to spend. But if its within your budget I personally would get a cage to bring up the camera so that the quick release is placed a fastened in the correct spot. Other than this the image quality is impeccable. I would give it 5 stars but I had so much issues with the weight Ill give it a nice 4 star review! An alternative to this lens is the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 planar for canon or nikon (just need the metabones adaptor) I actually got the metabones for nikon to Sony and bought the nikon mount because that has the manual aperture ring as well! I prefer my way due to the fact that it is cheaper and you get the same image quality.

Although this is a "modern" lens, it has no in lens motor, so relies on the screw drive from the camera. Focus is however fairly rapid and perfectly usable as not noisy.Being a smooth surface, it attracts no dust to any grip areas and the hood goes on easily and feels solid once engaged. The quality at f1.4 is acceptable, but sharpness improves at f2.8 in both the centre and corners. Compared to the Zeiss SSM lens, it it far more compact and a lot lighter, but certainly not as sharp. The bonus is that this lens costs about one third of the cost of the Zeiss.Recommended for A-mount users of full frame cameras, such as the A99, as a general walkabout lens.
This new Sony lens in impressively sharp in the center, and really sharp in the corners as its should for its price tag. Interestingly it was released at the same time as Rokinons first autofocusing lens, also a 50mm 1.4 for the E mount thats less than half the price. I ordered both of them to see how they compare and if this Sonys price tag is worth it. Starting off with the exterior the lens is huge compared to other 50mm 1.4s. This is one of my downsides of this lens. Using it on the A7R2 it does feel a bit too big for the body and if youre attaching a manfrotto plate that most use for video, you have to bring it to the very front as the lens is too large to fit with the plate causing a very front heavy setup. The Rokinon is also a large lens but smaller so the plate just barely fit under it. Making up for the size is the 11 blade iris which gives off a very smooth and circular bokeh (most lenses are 7-9 blade) and a manual aperture ring that can also be de clicked for smooth adjustment. The autofocus is fairly fast but the Rokinon was faster (but a bit less accurate). The manual focus ring is quite responsive compared to other Sony fly by wire electronic focus rings, and I could get consistent repetitive rack focuses with it. If you are making a living with your photos and or video and could use a great 50mm in your lineup this lens is definitely worth it. Its one of the best 50mm available and definitely the best one for an E mount. If youre a hobbyist or a pro on a tighter budget Id say the Rokinon is a better bang for the buck and is 90% of the lens for about 45% of the price, with a smaller size/weight advantage. I have a full comparison with sample photos and video on Youtube that you can check out, just search for 50mm 1.4 Rokinon Sony Max Yuryev. It was hard to choose between a 4 or a 5 star (I wish I could have done a 4.5) but I ended up giving this lens a 4 because of the size being larger than most other 50mm 1.4 which is a bigger deal when the lens is designed for small mirrorless cameras, and because I think the price is a big higher than it should be like many Sony lenses. Id personally think this lens should be priced about $1200, and it may be in a few years.
On the Sony a7Riii, this is one of the sharpest lenses I've ever had the pleasure to use. I primarily photograph landscapes, but I also particularly enjoy photographing derelict structures. Because I value sharpness and detail above most other considerations, for most of the pictures I take, I use a tripod and focus stack; in addition, many of my photographs are focus stacked panoramas using a panorama clamp. This lens has enabled me to obtain stellar results. I find the contrast very pleasing, with very little chromatic aberration if any at all, and easily corrected with software. Since this is the first normal lens I've used with any consistency in a long time (prior to that primarily using a primary wide-angle lense) it is opened up a new world of photographic ... Since this is the first normal lens I've used with any consistency in a long time (prior to that primarily using a primary wide-angle lense) it is opened up a new world of photographic possibilities for me. I also find myself much more likely to attempt handheld photos of both distant and closer subjects. It balances well on the camera body, and for handheld shots I find myself using a completely different (and to me easier and more comfortable) hand configuration than I did with an older and bulkier mirrored DSLR: the area between the first and second fingers on my left handle provides a cradle underneath the lens (which fits nicely because of the beveled nature of the lens as it meets the camera body) and my right hand uses the standard hand grip in the normal manner. Altogether, I am very happy with this lens, its' size does not provide the least impediment to my photography: I highly recommend it without reservation. Photographer for 40+ years. Shot Contax with Zeiss optics in my film days. Moved to Sony with the A900 and the Zeiss lenses when Contax was abandoned by Kyrocera. Moved to Sony Mirrorless with the A7R.While there are a nice selection of FE mount 50mm lenses, I tried many and when I tried the Zeiss 50/1.4 ... WHAM! ... there it was! The Zeiss look, feel and character I prefer over all others with the possible exception of Leica. One of the best creative still lenses for the FE mount, especially for the price!
The 50mm is perfect for anybody who thinks 85mm is too tight and the 35mm is too wide. The 50 was the focal length used by the most well-known street photographer of all time, Henri Cartier-Bresson. I think its a beautiful focal length. To me, it is the lens that has the most balance in photography. Theres little sacrifice because it lets you focus in on a particular subject while also giving you enough space to put enough details in the background. As for the lens itself, the Planar T is ultra sharp wide open f/1.4. And this is not just my opinion. According to lab tests, this Zeiss glass is actually one of the sharpest lenses in the market. The bokeh balls are also comfortably circular, not weird shapes that look like cat eyes or American footballs. Eye-AF ... Eye-AF function, when using with alpha-7 series cameras, is also brilliantly outstanding, much quicker than 3rd party lenses like Sigma Art.This lens is obviously not cheap. As someone who does not have unlimited monetary reserves, I sometimes purchase gear and then naturally have a long internal debate whether the item is worth the money to keep or not. Well, I never even had that thought once when I got this lens. It is that good.
I purchased this lens for two specific purposes. One was for use in the studio for corporate headshots and the other was to pair with my 85mm GM to shoot 2 camera videos of testimonials, client reviews... It was a very good lens until it started to fall apart. I noticed that auto focus was failing. Then I heard something that sounded like a screw clicking around inside. This lens had the best of care. I baby my gear as much as possible.I sent this lens out to be repaired. The quote was $363. I will buy a new 50mm GM instead. I have had no issues with my GM lenses. I did accidentally damage my 70/200 GM and was fine with paying to have it repaired. I will not pay for a lens that falls apart on its own.BTW, finding support for this lens through both Sony and Zeiss ... MoreI purchased this lens for two specific purposes.
