Also, there is an arm for the zoom and right hand controls that must be ratcheted up and back for travel or for the camera to sit flat. The video cards are thick and the angle to insert and remove them is a bit awkward. You wouldn't want to try it in a dark theater. I'm not able to separate the audio channels in my headphones with a quick flip of a button. And, inserting and removing the XLR cables is challenging, if you are trying to do it quickly, because of the angle and lack of open area behind the XLR plugs. If you have everything running, including the GPS, it drains batteries quickly. Very quickly. I've learned to turn off many of the features and use the 19.5 volt power pack when possible..HOWEVER, the quality of video is truly outstanding and if your work is mainly shot on a tripod, ( I recommend the Sachtler FlowTech) it worth dealing with the inconveniences. Now I just need to buy an additional lens for videos that require me being in the back of a theater, church or up on the press box level.

I have been using this camera for the past 2 years almost every day. You can shoot this camera with almost anything: YouTube content, short films, documentaries. It delivers rich blacks, a good highlight roll-off (for its price) , a wide dynamic range, auto VND, good autofocus (although sometimes need to turn on and off to find its focus), good jelly handling (panning fast left and right; almost like a global shutter) constant FX9 software updates, and more. The downside of the camera is that there is once while I was shooting a shortfilm with a super 35 lens with s35 mode, yet when recording it shows crop width just fine but when the footage gets imported to a pc is actually gets a little wider than what was shot. I am not sure why it does because it only happened ... MoreI have been using this camera for the past 2 years almost every day. Just a little note.PS: The camera can almost mimic an Alexa Mini with good Color Grading after post. Just slightly sharper (digital looking)in the image. Not as Sharp as the RED cameras though.Sincerely,FX9 User

Howdy! I love this camera and the image quality is spectacular. I spent weeks, nay months looking into the right rig and landed happily on this one. Previously I was shooting an the A7rii hooked up to a Shogun Inferno, and although I was getting great images from that the ergonomics were painfully awkward. Enter the Fs7ii and all my problems were gone. But wait.. there's more! Pros: This is a run and gun camera if there ever was one, between the Auto shooting mode and the Cine EI mode combined with the variable ND filter you can throw this on your shoulder and shoot about anything. If you have a large enough bag (i just used whatever recommended accessory bag it suggested on BH) you can toss this in the back of your car, roll up somewhere, pop it out and be shooting in thirty seconds. You're gonna want to put the cold shoe add on to the back part of the handle on right away, why it's not on there automatically is anyone's guess. You'll need the words smallest screwdriver. The grip is fantastic and a great fit to the hand, the issue being however if you're switching or resting on a tripod you have to remove these dumb screw clip things in order for the handle to go high enough, but then the handle is loser and slides up and down. Cons: 1. I'm not the most tech savvy guy, I know cameras pretty well however, but the menus system on this freaking thing is obnoxious, basically you just scroll and scroll and scroll until you maybe found what you need but probably not. Changing the ISO for example is hecking ridiculous. 2. As of now I'm having major problems importing footage shot in CineEI mode (the best and most dynamic mode on the camera) into Final Cut. Everything works fine in Premiere but I prefer using the Color Finale plug in only available for Final Cut. But Final Cut has some serious color problems importing CineEI footage, it does fine with the Auto mode footage though. I'll update it to 5 stars once that issue is fixed be it Final Cuts or Sony's problem, not that anyone cares about my one star ransom.

This is the absolute most budget friendly swiss army knife of cameras I've ever shot with.I bought it two years ago and have had it in rain, snow, hurricanes, -18, 122 degree Fahrenheit... all over the world. It just keeps running and printing money and capturing gorgeous images seen by millions of people all over the world. Its adaptable to almost every environment and shines no matter what I've manage to put it through. The only negative I'd say is that if you buy this camera you won't want to buy another camera because it does everything you'll need it to do and then some... The proxy S&Q turning off is annoying but I think was fixed in a firmware update... And no.. I'm not being paid by Sony. With 3000+ hours on my FX9 in really harsh environments... I’m currently shooting a new series in Tonga and American Samoa for Disney+ with Nat Geo as our production entity. After much discussion about camera platforms we decided upon the FX9 as our camera of choice and I could not be happier. So far it has performed flawlessly in the heat/humidity of the Tongan summer time. The Slog exposure capabilities are handling the wide range of tropical contrast in such a way that my anxiety resulting from previous camera platforms limitations are thankfully non-existent with the FX9. The 4000 base ISO has more than exceeded my expectations for work at dusk or shortly thereafter when let’s face it, it’s dark and hard to see anything. haha. All lenses are mounted with Wooden Camera and Metabones E to PL adapters and the FX9 mount is one sturdy piece of design work. I’ve been very impressed by its robust construction under the location circumstances we’re working in.I will have more to say when production wraps but up to this point I’ve been 100% pleased with the FX9’s ergonomics and image quality thus far.
This camera has a very impressive auto-focus system–the strongest I've seen on the market right now. The S-Cinetone is gorgeous–not sure I need to leave that profile when filming, but the folks at Sony do give you the option for more color and picture control with Cine EI. I love the flexible recording settings from 6K full-frame to S35 4K. These recording formats are giving me more creative options with my glass and with motion. The camera is amazingly light for its size. The Digital ND gives me a lot of latitudes to work with. I haven't used it long enough to notice if there are any drawbacks to using digital ND–it does have built-in ND as well. I haven't used it long enough to notice if there are any drawbacks to using digital ND–it does have built-in ND as well. I really like the flickering suppression feature when filming in uncontrolled lighting scenarios. The handle is greatly improved both ergonomically and functionally. The menu system is very easy to access and not very hard to learn. I really like the button/scroll to access the menu system and quickly change my settings. It's a versatile camera that can be used for documentary, commercial, and film–truly amazing. It appears to have some of the best qualities of both the Venice Cine Camera and the A9 photography camera. Pretty impressive. I can update again once I log more hours. FYI, the GM series work extremely well with this camera. They communicate so well with each other–it's incredible. Plus, you can easily get lens information on your monitor. The monitor is also really sharp and appears to be an upgrade from the FS7. Incredible camera, easy to use, beautiful images, a lot of creative control. It's a game-changer. I'm looking forward to the firmware update so I can record in RAW.
I've had this cam for over a year. It's been basically flawless. The image is fantastic. The handling is really good. The menu could use a complete overhaul - but it's not something that you deal with during a shoot really. It has been reliable. The media is reliable. It's solid in low light. If you want to shoot wide open in the day you'll need to add some extra ND.We've used it for commercials, unscripted TV, corporate videos, brand films etc. and it's been great at all of it.If I could give 4.5 stars I would, simply because they could improve the menu and add some extra internal ND for daytime.
I got the FX9 in May as a major upgrade from the Pocket 4k and A7iii, and I've been loving this camera for both personal and professional work. All the features of this camera are wonderful. The variable ND, the autofocus, and dual native ISO (not to mention 15+ stops of dynamic range) make this camera a joy to use. I'm still tapping into and learning this camera, but I have very little to complain about. If you're a at a level of production where you need a proper video camera body with a beautiful image, this is a great option. There's only a couple reasons I am giving this camera 4, and not 5 stars. The first is that it can be clunky to navigate the menu, and it is quite slow to change your sensor readout size (FF or S35) and frame rate (camera has to restart any time you switch it). The second is that unfortunately on my model, and many other models, the camera really accentuates chromatic aberration into very harsh noticeable lines that are not easy to remove in post. 95% they're not an issue, but occasionally if you have to shoot a backlit subject you could be in a world of hurt. Sony is working on this issue allegedly, and if firmware fixes or makes less painful any of these issues I'll update my review.
Coming from the FS7, then the FS7mkii; the FX9 is a nice upgrade. Full frame image is beautiful, and even the s709 LUT is a nice addition. Having an additional base ISO of 4000 is wonderful for doc work; as f4 lenses become that much more useable for verite scenes. Having timecode built in saves me from buying the extension back, which is something that just added bulk (although I do like using larger batteries). Excellent AF is also a great addition. The menu system is about the same as the FS7, they've just moved things around to complicate things a little - the customizable user menu is your friend. The quirks so far: Both the multi-function wheel (I use for iris) and the ND wheel cannot be changed to operate in the reverse direction. Want to stop down? Dial the wheel up. What to ND down? Well, dial the wheel up. This is opposite from how I had set my FS7, and I'm really hoping they add the ability to change this. Also, switching into S&Q mode is no longer 1 button touch like it once was. If you're on a higher scan rate, first you've got to drop to 5k crop, or S35. Then you've got to select which S&Q frame rate you'd like... instead of it just remembering you we're shooting 60p last time. Strange. Again, firmware update...?There's also an oddity when using LUTs. If you've got a LUT on the viewfinder, then you're stuck sending that LUT out via SDI1 and SDI2. So, if you turn the LUT off in the viewfinder, you can send a clean signal out (which I prefer, adding a LUT on my OLED external panel). Sony has figured this out and added 'gamma display assist,' a la Sony a7s, but I would prefer to look at an mLUT than 709 when run and gun exposing. The FX6 opens up another whole can of worms. How in the world is it able to do 4k/120, and Raw with no back but the considerably more expensive FX9 can't? I'd happily take a 4k/120 in body of the FX9, even if it was S35 only, or had some other quirk. In order not to cannibalize sales from the FX9, they've made the FX6 only shoot 4k in full frame, not in S35. Something fishy going on here.Anyway, love the camera so far. It's great that I've already got all the media from my past FS7s, and the image is brilliant. I'm looking forward to Sony replacing the F55; as there is a big gap between this camera and the Venice.
I ordered a lot of stuff with the FS7 and it all came packed well and organized except that there was a wobbly plate between the camera and the tripod and the camera assistant and DP were unable to make it solid, which meant that the follow focus wouldn't stay engaged so we were stuck without a follow focus and we were shooting fast-moving disc golf so we really lost a lot of important shots to that one problem. Also, the rods were too far from the lens when we used the Fujinon Twins so again the follow focus wouldn't stay engaged. We didn't have time to experiment or call so we dropped those shots and moved on. We were unable to use the Sony lens and should probably request a refund on that lens and the 2 follow focus units. Let me know if you agree.
