The first Sony 16-55mm (24-82.5mm full frame equivalent) APS-C zoom lens with a constant F2.8 aperture is remarkably compact while offering performance befitting the G lens series. A new optical design delivers excellent corner to corner resolution, and beautiful bokeh is available when needed. It is compact, lightweight and ideal for a wide range of subjects. Two advanced aspherical and two aspherical elements suppress aberration for outstanding corner to corner G lens resolution, while three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements reduce colour bleeding to a minimum. You get sharp, clear detail and natural colour throughout the zoom range at any focusing distance. Customisable focus hold button. Focus mode switch which allows instant switching between auto and manual focus modes. Dust and moisture resistant. The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any marks or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface. 67mm filter thread. 33cm close focusing distance. Comes complete with ALC-SH161 lens hood, ALC-F67S front lens cap, ALC-R1EM rear lens cap and soft case.

I decided to upgrade my Sony E Zeiss 16-70mm lens. I looked at a number of reviews and found that he Sony E 16-55 f/2.8 G is widely regarded as an excellent Mid-Range zoom for the Sony APS-C cameras. It seemed like an ideal upgrade. The Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G lens came with a very smart leather case and looked and felt like a quality product. I have not yet been able to give this lens a great deal of use, but my initial impressions are very encouraging. No matter what the conditions I had only one conclusion - this lens is very sharp and, more importantly, this is consistent across both the focal and aperture range. It out performs my previous lens in every respect

The 2.8 maximum aperture allows for good bokeh as well as enhanced low-light functionality, although you do need to increase ISO in order to minimize image blur in many situations.THE GOODPro-level standard midrange zoom for the Sony a6xxx/a5xxx bodies. Excellent sharpness and bright colors across all focal lengths. Manageable size and weight compared to the 24-70mm F2.8 G Master for the Sony full-frame lines. Lens feels well-built and is marketed as being weather sealed.THE BADVery pricey! For the same amount of money (or less) you can buy primes, such as the excellent Sigma 16 and 30mm 1.4 lenses which are just as sharp and much faster, with money left over for a basic zoom lens. You could even buy a full-frame A7II with a 28-70mm zoom lens for the same price. Itās a great lens if you are invested in the Sony APS-C line, but if you are just starting out you might be better off going in a different direction. No G Master designation. Itās a G designation, but this lens would have been perfect as the first G Master for the Sony APS-C line. The specifications seem to indicate that this lens could be a G Master but Sony chose to go with the G designation instead.THE UGLYThe lack of image stabilization makes this lens difficult to use in many situations if you have an older a6xxx body. It seems to be aimed at the newer a6500/a6600 bodies, which makes sense as those cameras are aimed at the more experienced photographer than the other Sony APS-C bodies. If you donāt have one of those stabilized bodies you may find that this lens is not as useful as expected, although one can argue that that it forces you to adopt some better habits, such as proper holding techniques. Stabilization would have made the lens heavier and possibly more expensive, although several lower quality zoom lenses have this feature at much lower price points (such as the 18-105 F4 and the kit 16-50mm lenses). The lack of stabilization makes this lens even more difficult to use on the a5xxx bodies since they have no EVF and so you have to hold the camera at armās length, which makes it even harder to hold the camera steady.

I primarily use this lens for family photos and food/product photography. Sitting on a tripod this lens is perfect. I don't see what more people want out of a piece of glass in this form factor. This lens is razor sharp. Expect to get a ton of hate from family for capturing details so sharp they hate the way they look :).I've only had an issue in low light on my a6400. Granted this is very minor 98% of the time and totally correctable with some practice. The only downside is lack of OSS at this price.Despite these cons I still stand behind this being the best APSC lens out there in the Sony APSC ecosystem. It can definitely push your work to new heights. If you have a non stabilized body, don't worry! This lens is still very capable without OSS or IBIS. This lens is expensive, yes. And it is a solid chunk of pound+ glass. And I had to sell my Sigma 16 and 30 - both f1.4 primes - to offset the price. Hated to do that. But I had been looking at buying the Sigma 56, which meant another $400-plus dollars AND having to get a bigger camera bag. So in that sense, this buy makes sense. There are many reviews online at legit sites, and the Youtubers Jay and Christopher and Jordan and Arthur...all love the sharpness of this zoom. Really close to the Sigma trio, but weighing much less AND having every zoom length covered between 16, 30, and 56. But I wish someone had mentioned that in their reviews.Granted, my a6300 has pretty good low-light performance, and that is helped by the 2.8 aperture on this beast. Frankly, there are not many instances where you have to use a flash. But when the sun goes down, you will see a definite flash shadow caused in the lower left part of the image. This is due to the popup flash being above and to the right side of the lens-sensor axis. Make sense?Am I still glad I purchased this? Oh, absolutely. And I would purchase it again. But I do know that I will miss the Sigma 30 and its low-light performance at f1.4 for candid photos. Will I end up buying a Nissin or Godox for my camera. Maybe...One thing I haven't tried flash-wise is how bad the flash shadow is in backlit daytime scenes when I need to use my fill flash. (Think people standing under a shady tree). I'll need to see how it performs. So, again, love the lens...if you can afford it. I just wish that all of those reviewers (whom I really do respect) had mentioned this flash issue.
I have used many Sony lens and this one has the most build of lens elements in the design. Having used cameras for over fifty years you know when a product gives good quality images without fudging them as I say. I am one of the old school photographers where the photo you took had to be spot on so maybe twenty photos one would be the right one this was on film and that cost money where as now if I take fifty shots it does not matter . So I have only had the lens for a few hours but in that time got the feel of the weight and operation of the lens, while normally within the first hour I would have taken around thirty photos this exercise was only 20 over the twenty shots my main goal is perfection of all the colours and in focus sharpness must be spot on. I check on what colours I am photographing against the actual subjects while they are still there to see. So the lens operates as I would expect it smooth and precise when I am out and about sometime there is no second chance especially with wild life and focus is the essence. If I am photographing moving object I like to be in control while bust control is there on my Sony camera there is something special about taken how many images and the art of doing it. So onto OSS while it's in my title I was brought up to use a camera to eliminate camera shake and can say this lens on my Sony body without built in stabilising is as it should be perfect. A word on the weight it does help to overcome OSS So overall without OSS which some photographers would like it loses a star
I used to travel with the Sigma Trio for Sony APS-C: 16mm, 30mm, 56mm F/1.4 and the quality was amazing. However, being the heavy traveler that I am (up to 6 continents this year, yes, I said continents, not countries!) I need something more travel friendly. Switching between 3 primes was just soooo annoying. I think at one point I switched lenses 20-30 times in 1 hour! Wanted to shoot myself. This 16-55mm G lens gives me just as good as image quality and now the extra convenience. Also for travel, I found myself shooting a lot of environmental portraits at F/2.8 - F/5.6. For example if the background is too blurred (i.e. Eiffel Tower or the Egyptian pyramids) then it doesn't show the beautiful scenery. Therefore I am not missing out much on the Sigma's F/1.4 at ...Ā MoreI used to travel with the Sigma Trio for Sony APS-C: 16mm, 30mm, 56mm F/1.4 and the quality was amazing. For example if the background is too blurred (i.e. Eiffel Tower or the Egyptian pyramids) then it doesn't show the beautiful scenery. Therefore I am not missing out much on the Sigma's F/1.4 at all.To be fair, I still bring my Sigma 30mm F/1.4 in my bag (or leave it at the Airbnb/hotel) just incase I need it for extreme low light shooting. But I have now sold off my 56mm and 16mm Sigma's.This lens at 35mm is better than my old Sony 35mm F/1.8 APS-C lens, IMO!
This lens is by far the best Standard Zoom for the Sony APS-C line of cameras, specially the a6600 which has in-body stabilization. The zoom range is awesome and you could trval with this lens alone. Clarity and sharpness are excellent. Focus is lightning fast and silent. With an f/2.8 it is faster than most and compete with most fast fix length lens. It is larger and heavier than the 16-70 f/4 Zeiss. BB had it on clearance in-store, so price made it a must buy.
I shoot panoramic landscapes and was using the excellent Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8. But I also like to shoot single frame landscapes and portraits of my grandchildren, and wanted one lens that could do it all. This lens is expensive, but I took a chance and was lucky to get it on sale from B&H. I did a sharpness comparison at 55mm with my Zeiss and was surprised at how close it was. I could barely discern any difference, even when viewed at 100% magnification in Photoshop. The colors and contrast were also excellent, almost on par with the Zeiss. Now when I go into the field or visit my grandkids, I use this one lens almost exclusively.Other things to note: the lens is a bit heavy but balances well on my a6600, not a burden to carry in my hand for long periods. It is very well built and zoom ring is smooth and solid - does not creep at all. Be aware that the lens does not have OSS, so you might want to consider a camera with Steady Shot built in. If you use it on a tripod like I do for landscape work, that's not an issue. Vignetting is high when wide open, and there is some distortion - these can be easily corrected though.I give it 5 stars because, although you might find lenses that exceed it in quality by a small margin, overall it delivers what I consider to be professional results, and is a joy to use. I love it!The attached photo is a JPEG straight from the camera with only a small adjustment in contrast. I also had to resize it to 50% in order to attach it to the review.
I've had a whole stable of APSC lenses for a6000's, a6400 and a6500. The Sigma trio really showed me what these camera were capable of - I started with the 30, then the heavy 16 then the newest 56. These Sigmas are great lenses, competitively priced with fast aperatures. But their resolving powers really showed that APSC didn't have to be mushy, slushy and fuzzy. So why am I gushing over these three Sigma lenses when reviewing this Sony 16-55 zoom? Those are best in class and so is this Sony. The three Sigmas, taken together cover the same ground as this lens, with the same consistent quality. The three Sigma together cost about the same, each offers a 2 stop speed advantage. The Sony zoom offers convenience and sensor protection of not changing lenses. Neither lens solution offers stabilization. The Sony zoom is smaller and lighter than the trio. It's nice to have the Sigma trio for their speed and the Sony zoom for its convenience. Both produce consistent results which are head and shoulders above pretty much all of the APSC lenses available in the Sony eco-system,So compared to the Sigma trio, this is great value.Compared to full frame, this lens offers APSC users a more usable zoom range than the classic 24-70 f2.8 and maybe more consistent results. (I know it's the same light gathering but less depth of field. Less depth of field is not always an advantage.) The Sony solution is almost half the weight. So it's good value from that perspective. Can you put a price tag on the time saved in changing lenses or photos lost being too lazy to change lenses... again? My Sony 16-55 stays glued to my a6500 as a do-all, protect the sensor from dust lens. Of course the a6500 has IBIS. Both have some weather sealing, also a rarity in the Sony APSC eco-system.It's unfortunate Sony didn't make this lens available earlier for its excellent sensors.Folks, it's THAT good.
I opened this lens and it would not go onto the mount. I tried 3 times using the pressure I normally use with my other lens. I then tried my old lens, no problem. Tried again with a little more pressure thinking it was just tight since new. Would only turn 1/2 the normal distance and not lock in. I took it off and looking more closely noted the black part inside the metal mount ring was elevated where my other lenses are not. This was not allowing it to turn in and lock. I called Sony and they told my to send it in for repair and then I would have to wait for it to be returned. I do not want a repaired lens at this price right out of the box. They were totally unhelpful. I also have concern if this could have caused damage to my camera body trying to get it turned ...Ā MoreI opened this lens and it would not go onto the mount. This was not allowing it to turn in and lock. I called Sony and they told my to send it in for repair and then I would have to wait for it to be returned. I do not want a repaired lens at this price right out of the box. They were totally unhelpful. I also have concern if this could have caused damage to my camera body trying to get it turned on. Luckily I bought it at best buy and they are great! I returned it and they are sending me another by tomorrow. They also discussed how to check the camera body for damage and were very helpful. Love my A6500 but after this poor customer service by them and terrible quality control on an expensive lens bad feeling about sony and future purchases of their products. They don't care. Best Buy on the other hand was great, helpful, and understood my concerns of possible damage to my camera.
