I've always loved Sony receivers and this is a solid and dependable little powerhouse. I listen to a lot of music and watch a lot of 1080p and UHD discs and the sound and video that go through this come out sounding and looking pure and full. Research anything before you buy- this receiver is well regarded and has the right number of HDMI and speaker inputs for my modest but powerful 5.1 blu-ray/UHD set-up. I couldn't be happier. Caveats: If Atmos is your jam, this can't do that. It doesn't have wireless technology. The troubleshooting you can do with AV sync is extremely limited and sync can be an issue if you're running all kinds of inputs in and out of your set-up. This is my first time owning a dedicated surround sound system. I purchased this Sony amp along with the matching Sony floor speakers, center speaker, and subwoofer. This system replaced a very nice Samsung soundbar system, and all I can say is after plugging this in, there's no going back to a soundbar. The dedicated left, right, and center audio creates immersion and engagement in a way that no other type of sound system can. Soundbars are trying to replicate the effect of a dedicated surround system. One point of note - be sure to select Multi Channel on the bluetooth mode, as multiple speakers, including the subwoofer are not automatically turned on. Multi- channel has to be selected. If I have a con on this product, it is that the display on the receiver can only be viewed at certain angles. If you are standing directly above the receiver, the text on the screen appears blank. Small gripe, but worth pointing out.

Bought this receiver to replace our Pioneer VSX -50 and to work smoothly with our new Sony 43 inch Bravia 4K TV. With a small living room space I now only use a 5.1 setup of large front Klipsch speakers, small Klipsch centre, medium Klipsch surround and 10 inch Energy Woofer. The integration of the Sony tv and receiver is excellent and trouble free. With 4K HDMI ports the picture quality is a perfect as it can be. The sound quality is superb and auto setup with the mic did not need further adjustments. As long as you do not have anything in the way of your speakers, the auto feature discerned the distance of the speakers to within a few inches, quite remarkable. I also have the 4K Apple TV second generation, so everything switches on with the Apple remote. Since this is a new setup I can’t really comment on the dependability over time. As all TVs and receivers, that I have researched at this price point, also have some possible quality issues, (unless you go into the thousands of dollars), only time will tell if I will have any future issues. But for now at a grand total of $1700 for the Sony 4K TV, Sony 4k receiver and Apple 4K TV, it’s a bargain setup that looks, sounds and works great. I highly recommend this receiver for your entry level or mid level need, and it also won’t break the bank.

I started out just stereo but this gem got my attention . Price was far and now I can have theater… Mores speakers more power etc… I have had it almost none stop at all ranges of sound. Crisp . Clean and easy to operate. Plus it’s real loud.. Till the neighbors downstairs started hitting the ceiling below my feet… So I turned it down and he came running up telling me turn it back up but more! Not all tenants are created equal. Got to love freedom of speech. Nice job Sony and Best Buy is the last great store out there. Customer service is perfect, very knowledgeable and very happy people… I keep buying stuff cause of that and the warranty!!! I will be a lifetime customer to Best Buy…
I don't know if it was me being a snob, or my ability to properly tune this receiver, but I was disappointed in the sound quality it pushed out to my 3.1 speaker setup with floor standing front speakers. I had upgraded from a 2009 Onkyo high end receiver which pushed out a much more full sound compared to this unit. This was lackluster in mid tone and bass. The setting menus are very plain and somewhat cryptic. You don't have much control over the speakers - no Midrange EQ, can't manually add them (have to use setup Mic). It did the job, it just did not meet expectations. I ended up going back to use my 2009 unit with digital optical out from my 4k TV. At the price, it would be better money spent to get a used higher end model from a few years older.
Purchased this Sony receiver with high expectations and boy was I disappointed. Once set up the receiver would shutdown/ reset randomly about every 10 minutes resulting in loss of music playing and bluetooth having to reconnect each time. Simply unusable. When it was on it sounded pitiful - way too much treble and mid range, virtually no bass when connected to high quality Infinity floor standing speakers I've used for years. Only after connecting 2 subwoofers was bass marginally acceptable. Fundamental design flaw - no treble or bass adjustments on unit or remote. Really??? C'mon Sony. Returned for a full refund and bought different brand. If I could give 0 stars for this piece of junk I would.
I had always by a fan of Sony since the 1980's. That has changed with the purchase of my last 2 products, this amp being one of them. The general functionality was generally good, but 2 HUGE problems make this a very frustrating unit: 1) Every 5 or so uses, the amp will not connect to the correct HDMI input. The ONLY way you can fix this, is by crawling behind the audio cabinet and physically unplugging the AC power for a few seconds. Once it "reboots" it connects as it should. Very annoying. 2) Even though the settings were saved as not to "auto-power on with HDMI input", it still does this. As a result it hijacks the signal, and turns off the TV audio. The unit must be turned off to release the audio back to the TV. Again...very annoying. I have now sworn off Sony ... MoreI had always by a fan of Sony since the 1980's. Sony Audio and TVs have let me down in recent years, and I am done with them.
Solid system for a bedroom or mid to small room but lacks functions of more expensive units. It does the job and has enough power but you can't dial in the speakers very much compared to some others. I find myself frustrated with speaker calibration often. There is some light adjustment but it's just the frequency and decibel level. There's also no option for different settings to switch between such as movies, games, or music. You have to manually go through menus and change each individual setting each time to get quality sound. There isn't like a selectable preset you can program and switch between. Auto calibration is really bad too. It sounded like an elevator speaker system and had to completely change every speaker setting after calibration. This system replaced an older Yamaha unit that failed after 12yrs but had better sound with lower power output and much better adjustability. Mostly disappointed in this one but it works well enough as a bedroom unit. If you just want surround sound and tweak it a lot on setup you'll be fine. If you want easy adjustability between sound inputs (movie, music, games, etc), you'll be disappointed having to manually change every speaker every time or living with one setting that does not fit all. Next time I'll go to a higher end unit.
I am not sure how I would rate the new Sony receiver. I have always had Onkyo before and they were easy to set up, have great surround sound and change between TV and gaming easily. Attaching wiring to the Sony is easy, set up is definitely more complicated and I doubt if I have it done correctly. Each time I turn on TV there is a default back to asking what I want to do and where I want to go and it asks me this twice. The surround sound also must have the same thing because I have to press buttons to get it working each time I want it Needless to say I am not that pleased with the unit but it does work and quite possibly would work much better if it were set up differently. I may need to get the Geek Squad to come and see if they can get it working better. Right ... MoreI am not sure how I would rate the new Sony receiver. For the record, I've owned several Sony products over the years. I even worked there a few. Haven't owned a Sony receiver in years, but needed to replace my old Pioneer. When I saw this receiver on-line and looked at the specs, reviews, and price, I was thrilled. As another old sound guy from the 70's (seems to be a few here), here is an audio device that gives you just what you need, with no extras. In short... Easy set up. Love the freedom Sony gives you with audio. I can go multiple channel setups on a whim. With large KEF's (+ center), large DCM rears, and a Mirage sub, freedom equates to happiness . Always loved their soundstage. Bluetooth music sounds good too Now that I'm 100% HDMI, I made the decision to run off the speakers, not the TV. This is the biggest surprise so far. Movies are "different". Previous rig was a Samsung Blu-ray with multi channel outputs hooked into the Pioneer. A richer sound than the Sony, I think, but I'm getting a lot more detail in the dialogue now. My rear speakers sound a lot more pronounced. I like it. Will continue to play around. What a bang-up job by my old company. Make the guy who thought this up CEO
