When people say that this little thing compares with most high-end full size decks, they are not joking. It performs as well as any good 2-head full size deck, including some of the Nak, Aiwa Sony and other brands. It has only a single-capstan transport, but the transport seems to be super-smooth because of its quartz-PLL controlled servo for the capstan drive. Its headphone output can drive large, moderately high impedance headphones without trouble: something almost no other Walkman can. In today's times when it's possible to record wave and Mp3s directly from source I'm not sure how many of you would want a cassette player but I'm among the few who still loves cassettes! Apart from it's playback quality which is par excellelance it's recording it's fabulous if you use a good source/mic and a High quality cable! I was amazed by the recording capabilities of this unit! I played back the recordings on my Nakamichi ZX9 and I was quite blown! Of course it did not match the Nak but it did sound as though I had recorded on a good quality cassette deck! Note: high end cables are necessary for quality recording. Rather they make a huge difference!

Everything worked except the record level and I'm going through a very lengthy and delicate repair on it right now. The board on it snapped and I've glued the board with epoxy but I had to get some conductive carbon paint to fix the boards circuits. It's going to take me a couple of more days until I can't test to see if the record level works. Other than that it is a very nice walkman. It does record but it only recorded in a very very small point that only allowed it to record at maximum record level.

When in good working order, these professional quality cassette recorders are capable of superb sound reproduction. Due to their age they suffer from internal drive belt rubber degradation. Replacement of these belts is difficult because the recorders have to be stripped down in order to gain access. Not a job for the inexperienced. Also the replacement drive belts need to be of good quality.

Sony is the device with excellent mechanical designs by engineers.After 2 years, it will be very difficult to own this device. The tape drive mechanism is robust and will not jam (unless you feed it with useless cheap tape). The reproduction of challanging musical pieces in a top notch Hi-Fi system can be nothing short of breathtaking but, it excells in mid-range and voice reproduction. I have just been listening to some tapes I made in 1992 on my WM-D6C recording from vynil and a very good turntable/cartridge combination on a TDK AD tape - it is still amazingly good. And yes, I was listening to it on my new WM-D6C which I bought on eBay recently. I just had to have it again. In fact I bought several (just in case). They do not make them like that any more .........

The Dolby B NR function works very well. The Sony WM-D6C's and my old Aiwa tape deck's Dolby C functions match perfectly. Back then, the main problem with Dolby C was the not so perfect compatibility between Dolby C systems of different machines. In the 1990s my Dolby C tapes performed very well in my Aiwa tape deck but not in my Aiwa HS-PC202 MkII portable. The WM-D6C has no problem whatsoever. I have copied many old tapes onto minidisc and the results were simply excellent. For tapes that originated from CDs or original cassette tapes I simply hook up the WM-D6C line out to my Sony MZ-RH1 portable MD recorder line in. For tapes recorded from vinyl albums I tend to use the Sony SEQ-50 in between to make a few minor corrections to both low and high frequencies: however, this is a limitation of my old turntable system rather the WM-D6C. In both cases, once again, the results are stunning. I haven't tried the recording function yet so I cannot comment on it. Highly recommended.
