Comfortable And Clear - Sony WF-SP800N

This is a review for the Sony WF-SP800N Wireless Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Headphones. I have had these headphones for about two and a half weeks now, and I felt a review was in order for these items.First, let's start with the cons:The seal can be hit-or-miss with earbuds, but that's a given with the nature of these earbuds. I personally have no trouble with the seal, using two medium silicon earbuds, but other friends who have tried them with different earbuds have had differing results.Another problem I had with them is within the Sony headphones app. Occasionally when I'd pair them to my phone, they would have no volume or sound output. I personally have no trouble with the seal, using two medium silicon earbuds, but other friends who have tried them with different earbuds have had differing results.Another problem I had with them is within the Sony headphones app. Occasionally when I'd pair them to my phone, they would have no volume or sound output. This was fixed by going into the app, manually adjusting the volume slider, and then returning out. This has only happened 3 or 4 times, and overall is fine. The final con, and this could be considered a dealbreaker for some, is that sometimes the earbuds disconnect from each other. Very rarely it happens, but when pairing the earbuds, they can just randomly drop out and you'll be left with one playing audio, and the other one just silent. I usually need to reconnect both earbuds at least one or two other times, and then they will start working in tandem with each other. It's a very niche problem, but it will happen. Now, for the pros and what I personally enjoyed about these:The audio quality is superb and clear, and as someone who usually uses wired Audio Technica ATH-M50X's into a DAC on their desktop, these Sonys actually held up quite well. Bass is a bit lacking, but with some EQ work and better sealing, you can get a nice punchy base without sacrificing too much of the mids and highs. The microphone quality is quite good. I used them in a few Discord calls and phone calls, with everyone remarking that my microphone sounded pretty good. Even recording internally to my phone sounded fine, and I'd say that it was nice to hear clear audio coming from these little buds. The noise-canceling can be hit or miss depending on the person, but for me personally it blocked out around 90% of the sound when set to the highest settings. The ambient noise feature was also very helpful, and works quite well, granted that you don't have long hair like me that brushes against the microphones and causes a rustling sound. It performed well when I was walking next to a highway, and blocked out almost all noise. The size of these is what also appealed to me, being very small and almost flush to the ear when inserted is very helpful. It allowed me to workout with these on indoors and outdoors, and they didn't fall out of my ears or anything. It was nice to be able to hear while moving up and down and around, and they didn't fall out a single time. This is dependent once again on the amount of seal you have, but for me they worked great for just walking, running, and overall exercise. I also felt fairly secure as they are IP-55 water and dust resistant, so they can take some dust and sweat, but that does not mean you can swim with them. Trust me, I've tried swimming with IP-68 rated earbuds and they broke. Do not try that with these. The battery life is amazing, being able to get around 16 hours with the case at half volume without noise cancelling. With noise cancelling I was able to get around 10 hours at half volume with the charging case. It feels good to be able to snap open the case, put in the earbuds, walk around for a bit, and then pull them out with no worries for the battery life. They actually performed better for battery than some of my older earbuds and headphones, which was quite surprising. The build quality is also really nice. The plastics on the earbuds and case feel like a nice high-quality one, the silicon earbuds don't feel cheap, and the charging case has a nice smooth feel, while also having a good hinge that makes that satisfying "snap" noise. I feel confident that this case can hold up to anything in my pockets, and it's quite sturdy. The earbuds themselves don't have any give and the capacitive sensors work almost all the time, with a few misinputs from my hair. Additionally, the charging pins are set so that the earbuds just snap in magnetically and start charging. Simple to put in and simple to pull out. Finally, let's talk about connectivity. I was able to use these with my phone around 35 feet away in my house with almost no breakage in signal quality, but when moving around there'd be a bit of fizz followed by a change in volume. 35 feet is good enough for me, and honestly was better than I was expecting, and holds up to the Bluetooth standard. In the Sony app, you are able to see the charge of the headphones and the case charge (determined by the last time the earbuds were placed within it) which is very helpful and nice to see, allowing me to generally get a feel for when the earbuds were draining low. The adaptive location setting has worked fairly well, and was very consistent. It knew when I was in my workspace, and then it knew when I was moving around and to put ambient noise on. I think it was probably one of the more experimental but good things I've liked in the headphones and earbuds space.Overall, this was a pleasant and nice product to use. The adaptive noise canceling, ambient sound, and ANC are very good for the price class. The build quality is great, the sound is spectacular and clear, with good base and a really good microphone that has no business being as good as it is. It feels comfortable, is small and portable and will always have a place in my electronics bag.

Maybe this problem will mysteriously correct itself just as mysteriously as it started before I find the time to squeeze an unnecessarily long customer service call, during normal business hours, into my schedule when I have little availability during said business hours.Other than that, the little ear hookies hurt at first, and if you wear them too long. I must have an odd shaped ear canal on one side, because it took some finagling to get it stay in there without, itself, essentially plugging my ear, defeating their very purpose. But they’ve been reliable, do a good job blocking out ambient noise, and have a reasonable range. On a broader note, this has been one of several technical nightmares with recent Sony products I’ve purchased. The complete lack of DIY troubleshooting for the absolutely bizarre and infuriating technical issues I’ve encountered is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth.I very well might go with a different brand if these earphones have met their end.

Great sound quality, easy to clean, and they stay put during active use. At first I was totally let down when I simply couldn’t get these earbuds to stay in. I tried the different sized plugs and different orientations and they wanted to fall out every few minutes. I was ready to return them when I accidentally twisted them into place in my ear, then everything made sense in the world. Here’s the deal with these earbuds: the silicon ring is designed to almost screw into it out ear to provide a solid grip. I use the smallest of the 3 plugs. I insert the earbuds into my ears, then quarter turn them backwards. The silicon ring locks them into my ears and I can jog without even thinking about them. When I’m done I can wash them in the sink without worry. The noise ... MoreGreat sound quality, easy to clean, and they stay put during active use. The only negative with the ambient sound is it does an overly good job of amplifying noise, so it often boosts the sound of your breathing or gusts of wind. This is only with ambient sound turned on and I’d rather have this problem, then being unable to hear what’s going on around me. For casual use, these headphones sound amazing with noise canceling turned on. I think the biggest issue with these headphones is the fact that they don’t explain the need to rotate them a bit to set them in your ear. Once that’s figured out, these things really are about as good as it gets for a fitness-focused, high quality earbud.

Great if you've got to Move It Move It!

My 3 year-old Sony WH-1000XM2 over-ear noise-cancelling headphones have been fantastic for commuting on the train and are still going strong, but I wanted ear-buds for situations where I don't want to be encumbered by large headphones - so whether gardening, washing the car or exercising, the new SP800N seemed like a good solution. So far they have good battery-life and come with a selection of different-sized silicone ear buds. I quickly found that having the right-sized buds fitted is critical to both the noise-cancelling function and to sound quality. I quickly found that having the right-sized buds fitted is critical to both the noise-cancelling function and to sound quality. As you would expect from Sony, both are pretty good; but not excellent as on the WH-100XM's. However, perhaps that is comparing apples with pears! These earbuds feature "360 Reality Audio" which, on the basis of the demo, sounds incredible. It may even be a total game-changer in terms of headphone sound-staging, but is available only via third-party apps like Deezer and Tidal. If you do subscribe to one of those I would definitely recommend these earbuds. They also have a range of equalising options - all controlled via the App - to enhance speech, treble, bass and to "tune" the sound to your taste.Negative points for me are the touch-controls which are bit fiddly for those with larger fingers, and the buds are actually much bigger than I expected (bigger than Apple earbuds for example). The do work with Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and the Google Assistant, though, so that made things easier for me.The noise-cancelling function is quite effective but, as before, this does depend to a great extent on the "fit" of the earbuds. Getting it right involved some trial-and-error as I tried out the differently-sized buds. The sleek and understated design of the charging-case, which also holds the buds securely in place, is a nice touch which enhances the feel of the SP800N's as quality product. Unlike some buds these have not worked their way out of my ears as I walk or run, which suggests they may be a good buy for users who might use them at the gym.Overall I would say these are a solid Sony product and, as such, represent value for money - especially for those who can take advantage of the "360 Reality Audio" functionality. However, I would also say that all noise-cancelling earbuds are still quite nascent so I am sure Sony will continue to develop and improve them as time goes on.

The headphones were well packed in quality branded and clearly labelled packaging, which also included simple to follow three step instructions to enable me to start pairing the headphones as soon as i had opened them (no reading through pages of instructions!). There is a paper instruction booklet included within the box (i am yet to go to the trouble of opening it as i am confident i dont need it)To use the headphones i downloaded the app to my phone (not a Sony phone) and straigtaway it connected with ease to the headphones so from unboxing to playing my first song it was all done in a matter of minutes thanks to clear & concise instructions.yes there is the option to scan the QR code but to be honest i didnt at first and it didnt impact my start up, i only ... MoreThe headphones were well packed in quality branded and clearly labelled packaging, which also included simple to follow three step instructions to enable me to start pairing the headphones as soon as i had opened them (no reading through pages of instructions!). I have used them walking, jogging, gardening, cycling and completing household / diy tasks and i have found that within all of these multiple but everday scenarios that they sat well and secure within my ear - i found only two negative points with them. They make your ears warm and sweaty after prolonged use especially on a warm day. and when taking a call using the headphones i could hear the conversation perfectly fine, yet the other call complained of not hearing me due to my voice being lost in the noise of the wind and this was commented on a few times by different callers. Just to add, i did also use them in the shower and goofing about in the kids paddling pool and true their word they were completley water resistant, they remained fully functioning with no loss of base or quality of sound and sat right in place. To operate the headphones the app allows you to preset your prefernce for the touch sensor function of each ear piece - you can tap control volume or play options, or to activate google or alexa assistance. The only negative here for me was that i could not mute or cancel an incoming phone call using the headphones. The tapping to activate the controls is simple to understand & follow, whilst getting use to this i did on occassions tap incorrectly but for me it was no major drawback - time is what is needed to become accustomed to use this feature effectivley. The sound quality was for me fantatsic, the headphones completley cancelled out the background noise - i used them whilst mowing my lawn and i was oblivious to the world around me (perfect!), the depth and base of the music was excellent and of a high proffesional quality - as i have previously said third partys have commented on wind / noise interence when on a call but i personally did not hear any intererence.I found that from 100% battery i got over 9 hours of play time, i then was able to charge using the charging case for another 9+ hours usage - this for me was more than adequate playtime as i certainly cannot forsee the need for me to need 18 hours of continuous play time without the opportunity to charge (may be an issue for some more heavy users though). The charging case was a comfortable size, not the smallest of cases but for me this was great as it wasnt fiddly, it was a manageable size to hold and to use. Its not too big to fit in trouser pockets and is also a great size for a handbag / backpack. The headphones app is a great support to the use of the headphones, it shows clearly the battery power of each headphone and the charging case. And is easy and clear to navigate to customise the settings to personal preference. To summarise - the negatives are that they do make your ears warm and sweaty after prolonged use on a warm day and allow wind noise to transfer through on calls to the third party which effects their call quality. The positives are simple and straightforward setup and useage, great battery life, noise cancelation and deep base quality that made playing my music an enjoyable experience.I definitley recommend these as suitable for everday usage and due to the sizing options i believe that most people would find them comfortable and pleasurable.

Purchased Over Samsung Buds Pro

First pair of modern true-wirless earbuds & there are a few aspects I'd like to cover.:1) The fit compared to ear buds I've had in the past, is immaculate! Not worrying about how vigorous I go about an action/activity w/ the flexible mid-ear locking tips/wings is a game changer. Additionally the seal between the audio cups and the ear is complimented and reinforced by the tips/wings. Even when precipitation enters the equation, everything stays put.2) I've switched from studio-grade wired headphones to using the "SPOONS" as primaries! The ability for spacial sound with these little suckers go a long way, they really hold up. The ability for spacial sound with these little suckers go a long way, they really hold up. It should be noted that i use these over Bluetooth with laptops and PC's that are equipped w/ wireless modules that interface w/ & take advantage of premium codecs and audio systems (DTS-X, Ultra, Unbound, ATMOS, TAHD, etx.). These factors combined w/ the onboard Sony 360 Audio feature, I didn't think I could expect the immersion level that the SP800N's deliver when diving into 10-bit media that has 5.1;AMTOS/TAHD and such. Overhead audio is something I tend to be keen on in action films, something people soundbars have been sought after for... well... I won't be get ting one of those as long as these buds keep spoiling me.3) Paired with respective BT5.1+ source devices, the range is beyond amazing. Unconsciously, I actually mowed the lawn to a playlist while wearing these, not realizing that I left the tablet [Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+] in the basement office. Never dropped audio.4) For that previous experience, I did find one grip. I'm not sure weather to file this under Sony's app not being intuitive enough in this regard, or the hardware not being able to accommodate what I sought. Nevertheless, while the touch functions can be customized, the user cannot set each individual function to a touch action, rather a choice must be made between predefined function sets. Take the "Ambient Sound Control" preset for example. This one preset contains two functions for a respective variation of touch actions: Tap; Noise Cancelling/Ambient Sound/Off and Long Press; Quick Attention. These cannot be further customized UNDER the preset, such as switching the long press to virtual assistant (although there is a virtual assistant preset for the various platforms).I've never been a crowd-go-er so I would have no need to test them in vocally loud environments. However, I have passed construction zones & mining sites, walked by central-air units, driven aside snow plows on the road & semi's on the freeway, walked through hen houses, stood at the center of MX arenas w/ about 70 riders on bikes & in buggies, along w/ a few other notable environments to test the audio-filtration of the WF-SP800N's. While I never depend on the aid of electronics for absolute silence (that's what compression silicone earplugs are for), I CAN say that the buds provide enough of an audio relief to give users the cut-off they need to perhaps focus & collect themselves from audible sensory overload.Overall, I chose a good pair for myself and would definitely buy these for others in my circle, likely even for co-workers to use in the office. That said, if you're interested, wait for a sale that won't have you forking over more than 140usd. OR just get a pair of the Sony WH1000XM3's, as they are commonly found for less than 160usd now in new condition if you know where/how to peruse.

Solid Entry in the Wireless Earbud World

Context: I am not an audiophile and use my headphones in 2 settings- at work (now home) to block out the cube farm (now family) noises and when running or working out by myself for an hour or more. I also just happen to have several pairs of Bluetooth headsets right now (yes, I may have a problem).Sound: these sound very good! The bass is solid, the music and voice calls are crisp & clear at all times!Comfort: Despite their slightly larger “in-ear” profile relative to some other earbuds, they’re very light and comfortable and optional ear hooks really provide an extra sense of security- a key factor when purchasing $200 headphones! Even without the active noise-cancellation, the tight, secure fit does a great job of blocking outside noises. I honestly had a hard time finding noises that were loud enough to make the noise-cancellation feature worthwhile- guess I’m just in pretty quiet places nowadays!Ease of Use: I did have to charge them before their first use- no deal-breaker, but an added bonus that seems to be more standard with electronics nowadays. Pairing them was very simple & the directions were clear. Once paired, I was switching back & forth between a couple different sets of headphones for comparison purposes and the Sony’s were great about turning off & re-pairing again when I wanted them.App: the accompanying app functions as an equalizer and allows one to customize various functions and options for the earphones- e.g. which earbud controls what functions, etc. There was an option to use a “360” sound service that sounded intriguing, but was only functional with certain providers, so don’t be sold on that function until you look into the required services and decide whether an eligible subscription would be worthwhile for you.Uses: For use at work (or home during the current WFH environment) the Sony’s were great- they block out almost everything (much to the chagrin of co-workers/family members). I also made a few co-workers endure some testing of different headsets over conference calls- the Sony’s were reported to have the best microphone of any pair I’ve got. While I can’t go to the gym, I did find them to be adequate for walking around town and doing light calisthenics- e.g. push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, etc.. Again, the added stability of the ear hooks (in-ear not over-the-ear) really gave these an edge for moderate activities over some other earbuds. They did not work AT ALL for running- I tried a couple different size ear pieces & configurations and they would not stay in. If that’s what you’re looking for, I still haven’t found a pair without an over-the-ear hook that I’d trust while running. I’m also NOT a believer in trying to cancel out all noises while running, so I’m not sure that some of the things that make the Sony’s really great-sounding headphones are what I want when out running.Case: While not something I care about at all, the storage/charging case for the Sony’s is significantly larger than some other popular brands’ cases- just bear that in mind depending on your intended use- you're not necessarily going to want to toss these in your jeans pocket until you need them!Summary: Solid sound, super easy to use, not for running, but OK for moderate activity.

Terrible and anger-inducing

Do not buy!! I bought these after my beloved Jaybird Vistas died, and after trialing the Jabra 75T, which I didn't like. I bought these Sony earbuds on the advice of the salesperson and because they were on sale. They have made me SO ANGRY within 12 hours of using them. They fall out because they don't fit well. And because of this, I am constantly adjusting them - but every time I touch them as part of the readjustment, it sets off/on the noise cancelling, or the ambient sound, and They switch off. EVERY TIME you touch them (which you are forced to because they need readjusting as the fit is hopeless) something changes and it drove me INSANE! They are very big and heavy so forget expecting them to stay in your ears if you are doing anything high intensity or which requires your head to move. I'll give them away to a family member who has more patience than me, and will go and buy another pair of Jaybird Vistas, which have their issues too, but tick all the necessary boxes for me.

Very good In-Ear Headphones

I would like to share some of the features and address some of the concerns I myself and other reviewers have highlighted. For one, I would say that while I would be satisfied with these headphones if I bought them for the full retail price, I think the $148/150 dollar price range is a very good deal considering they offer noise cancellation and an app where you can adjust the ambient sound level, touch controls, and, most importantly, the EQ. I would say these headphones have very solid mids which makes listening to music very enjoyable. Additionally, even though everyone has an ear that has been tuned to their own music tastes, the EQ allows for anyone to go in and adjust their music to their own liking. Additionally, this EQ applied to youtube videos, watching movies on a video service of your choice, and to the audio of your own recorded videos. So the EQ is a very valuable addition that you would not normally get with many other headphones. Thus, it is for that primary reason I would recommend these for anyone.Secondly, I would say that the battery life on these headphones is extremely impressive at around 9 hours with noise cancellation and 13 with ambient sound control at around the mid level. Plus the case gives you an extra 9 hours which, while is only one additional charge, is good (not great) compared to other options at this price point. There are other minor issues I have with the case besides its limited battery capacity and additional hours it can provide on a single charge. While the case is aesthetically fine and fit in your hand/pocket nicely, it is prone to smudges and scratches quite easily because of the finish on the case itself. While it isn't major, it is something to keep in mind. Secondly, and just as minor, the case itself does not stand upright due to the rounded curve on the bottom. Not really a big deal by any stretch but something to keep in mind. Now for the biggest issue with these headphones. I, along with other reviewers, do notice an issue with the comfort and fit of these headphones in the ears. At first i suspected it was the wing tips, as I have found those to be uncomfortable on other in ear headphones. But I found these wing tips to be fine. I found that it was the Sony ear tips that came with these headphones. While I wouldn't say they were completely unwearable, I did notice that they do make your ears sore over time when wearing them, regardless of the size of the ear tips you use. I found that using the ear tips I had on another brand of in-ear headphones i had been using before can fit onto these headphones no problem and resolved that issue for me. So I would recommend, replacing the ear tips with ones on the in-ear headphones you were using before these Sony in-ear headphones. They resolved the fit issue and helped with the noise cancellation as well. The last minor issues I had with these headphones encompassed the noise cancellation and the call quality. While the noise cancellation is good and certainly works extremely well when playing music while in a car, airplane, or while running, when the music is paused on your device, the noise cancellation "humming" is quite distinguishable. Just something to take into account. The call quality I found to be fine but when you use them in a car with noise cancellation on or off I have received complaints that the other person cannot hear me very well and they can hear a humming. I believe it is because of the sensitivity of the headphones to isolate your voice in a car depending on how well it is. So just be aware that these headphones have sensitive voice isolation and you need to make sure you're not next to anything that can disrupt the ability of the earphones to isolate your voice.Overall, I would certainly recommend these headphones and am very satisfied with the customization and fit of these headphones. Moreover, these headphones come with a added bass boost feature where you can customize the level of bass in all incoming audio. I can say that the bass is extremely impressive for a pair of in-ear headphones and contribute to improving the noise cancellation the headphones provide if you're listening to music with the bass turned up. Additionally, these headphones are very loud as well so you can have these turned 2/3rds of the way up and not hear anything around you. Moreover, these headphones connect very quickly to your device and you can place one headphone in the charging case and listen to audio on the other, it doesn't matter which headphone either. And when i say they connect quickly I mean the time it takes for you to take it out and plug it into your ear, you can hear the command prompt indicating the headphones have been paired and connected to your device. I will say i did have some audio connectivity issues with connecting the headphones to my computer but that could be an issue with my computer's Bluetooth but I cannot confirm this. If you use these headphones to connect to your computer then you should check as soon as possible if the connection does not get disrupted and the sound quality is equivalent to the quality you get on your phone or other devices. All in all, while there are some minor issues with these in-ear headphones, as you should come to expect with the technology available on the market under a 200 dollar price point, i believe many of these minor issues can be overlooked and can even be unnoticed over time. As for potentially major issues such as ear tip fit, comfort, and sound, i believe these can be resolved with utilizing different ear tips and adjusting the EQ to what your ear is used to. Thus, I would certainly recommend these in-ear headphones and would like to ease any uncertainty or anxiety that potential customers may have by saying these in-ear headphones are very good compared to other options on the market, especially if you get them for around $150 dollars. I hope my review helps and I would be happy to answer any concerns one may have before purchasing!

The only criticism I would give is that the case only has a single LED light for charging. It would be better if it had several LED's to indicate the amount of charge left in the case, but no complaints otherwise. If you want great sounding wireless headphones that fit and stay on during exercise (this is mainly what I use them for), then these are a great buy at $149 on sale. Thanks Sony.
