I purchased these about a month ago. This is my first foray into wireless noise canceling headphones in about five years, I am impressed with the improvements. The sound quality is simply terrific, approximately as good as a set of wired headphones of similar cost. The wireless link is reliable, no interference or dropouts noted though in fairness I usually use these with my phone which is never more than a few feet away.I purchased these in part to replace a set of headphones that I use when I cut my grass. That is a very challenging environment for noise reduction as it contains wide band noise from very low frequencies up to almost the limit of human hearing. The noise is also at a fairly high decibel decibel level, something like 90+dba at 1 m. The headphones ... MoreI purchased these about a month ago. The noise is also at a fairly high decibel decibel level, something like 90+dba at 1 m. The headphones knocks the mower noise down to a really surprising level, and even with the noise reduction working that hard the audio still sounds great. I also very much appreciate the touch features of these headphones. My experience with non-phone/computer gesture sensing has not been good. However these sense tap and swipe gestures very reliably. The headphones come in a small zippered case and include accessories such as an airplane adapter and hardwired cable. They charge in three hours or less, usually much less, from USB-C. Sony also has an app available for iOS and android that provides various settings for noise reduction, equalizer, and setting the function of a dedicated button on the headphones. I can't speak to the iOS version but the android version works well, I've had absolutely no issues with it.Overall I think these are a great choice, and well worth the price.

I wanted so badly to love these headphones. They were supposed to be Sony's best ever, and I had *never* - in 40+ years - had any issue with Sony audio. The brand has earned my loyalty and trust. But the WH-1000XM4 has been a letdown of epic proportions. The pros: They're very comfortable and - when working properly - the sound quality is 9/10, perhaps even a 9.5 depending on what you're listening to. They're lightweight, yet solid state. They also have great battery life - I've used them 20+ hours without a recharge. The cons: Unfortunately, the above-mentioned sound quality is often compromised and there's no explanation for it. When watching TV in the office - I'm 9-10 feet away from it - the sound will suddenly warble for stretches of time, from as few as 10-15 seconds up to 3+ minutes. There has been less of that the past few months, but also, I have been using them progressively less and less, which could account for the apparent reduction. What's still happening with EVERY single use, however, are the dropped bluetooth connections. Whether I'm walking, working in the garage, or just sitting at my desk, the connection will drop and have to be manually re-started. It's extremely frustrating and today, I reached my wits' end. I turned them off for the final time and listed them for sale.I'm going to try the XM5s, however, if the same issues appear, I will be returning them immediately.

A few weeks in and hundreds of hours of wear, here's my takeaways:Pros:- Excellent sound quality- Comfortable fit - I wear for 8+ hours a day and have comfort the entire time.Cons:- I bought this for the noise cancelling. Maybe I set my expectations a little too high, but the noise cancelling isn't as good as I hoped. It's still very solid, but I think brands do themselves a disservice by overselling the NC.I have the NC on max (no ambient sound allowed) according to the app, and in the gym I can still hear the music playing in the background and the clattering of weights. It does reduce it a lot, but I'd say it's only about a 50% improvement over my cheap ZVOX headphones. If you buy these headphones expecting it to mute the world around you, you're going ... If you buy these headphones expecting it to mute the world around you, you're going to be disappointed. You'll need to have music playing, because if you're listening to podcasts or anything with just voice, you will be able to hear some background (depending on of course how loud the background is - my gym isn't too loud and I can still hear a fair amount).- The connection routinely cuts in and out on my iMac (but not my iPhone). I changed the bluetooth connection in the app to the lower quality sound, but more reliable connection but I still have issues (just not as often as the higher quality sound connection). This only is really an issue when watching videos on my computer. When it cuts out for a sec or two, it'll create a mismatch between the audio and the video, so they won't be in sync. Which would be really annoying if you're watching a TV show or movie.

I've owned a pair of these since early 2021, I'm writing this review now because it seems like these or the xm5 variant are the holy grail of headphones now. Nobody talked about or wore these in public in 2020 or 2021 but they suddenly picked up extreme hype and everyone and their mothers now has or wants a pair of these over their airpods. The self-proclaimed audiophiles do actually think this is good. The problem is that the bass of these are so overpowering and muddy that a LOT of detail is just lost and lacks tonality at all. Luckily, there is a online project called AutoEQ which provides harman optimised eq from testing. To apply these you can use an app on android called wavelet or an app on windows/mac called equaliser apo. Main message? if you use ios you are taking a massive L because you are deprived of LDAC and are unable to correct the eq very well. Understandably like most people, i used to think that more bass is good but i realised how monsterous this was when i tried using a harman-neutral eq.your favourite headphones are not as good as you think.
BUTTONS PEOPLE. For the love of God, why is normal basic human functionality such an unreasonable request? There I was, just washing some dishes wearing headphones while on an important call, and somebody needed to get my attention and talk to me for a minute. Naturally, I go to just simply move one earpiece off of my ear to easily listen to what they needed to say real quick. No need to touch any controls at all, right? Not with wet fingers. Now the call I was on needs to hang up immediately and without warning because that's how touch screens work. I shudder to think how these headphones will suffer in slight damp rain!I usually buy the Bose Quiet Comforts, but I had to return the pair I JUST bought because of a million and a half issues, but Lord Almighty I ... I shudder to think how these headphones will suffer in slight damp rain!I usually buy the Bose Quiet Comforts, but I had to return the pair I JUST bought because of a million and a half issues, but Lord Almighty I miss those buttons. Buttons never push themselves. Just TRY to rapidly lower or raise the volume while listening to music on these Sony's. It skipped like three songs in a row just trying to do what the Bose would do SO EASILY.Honestly, like leave the touch screen for all the people who just die over every ridiculous and unnecessary innovation. Fine, but give me some dang buttons that I could use instead! Like, it's already got two buttons, an On and Off button, why not a VERY simple volume button? Better yet, why not let me turn off the idiotic touch screen on the app and just use my buttons? I will suffer through reduced capabilities with a smile on my face knowing that BASIC functions will work without worry. They are comfortable and provide good isolation, and unlike the Bose pair the microphone actually works. Time will tell how they hold up, but I fear the rain, and I fear touching the controls AT ALL knowing that it might interpret my touch as literally anything if I don't do it exactly perfectly precisely right.I did a ton of research and it seems that all the decent headphones today that have the features I need (Excellent isolation as I work with loud, rumbling equipment all day, Bluetooth, battery life, water resistance for rainy weather (yeah right, I know), and a microphone that, you know, works) all have those stupid touch screens. The exception being the Bose QC45's, but I tried em and they had so many connectivity issues, garbage mic issues, and couldn't handle the noise from a window being rolled down in a car without painful bursts of sound in my ear, so I guess I'm stuck with this crap. If there was literally ANYTHING else I would buy it.
After telling myself buying a quality pair of headphones was worth $300 plus i did the research an for the price point an value (so i thought) i landed here sony xm4. First off it never speed charged at all. Which was 80-90° the reason i went there. Thought i was doing something wrong until about a month in it started to charge when an how long it felt like meaning i could plug it in for hours only to pick it up an have 10° batterie. Than i started to notice an electrical burning scent coming from somewhere in my office i could’t locate but weirdly i only noticed while wearing headphones huh. Well 3rd month in an i now see the plastic around the port had melted, you know they did run noticeably hot since day one i just thought that was the large mega $300 components ... Needless to say i would have been much happier sticking with $20-$40 headphones that sound same to me may not have noise cancellation but generally last about a year an don’t mind when they break. Also the text talk feature is a major pain. The music constantly would stop at any noise i turn off feature an if the headset rubbed against my hood or jacket it would turn back on. Answering calls sucked too since it would ring i could answer or accept call with headset but to engage i would have to fumble to locate my phone to switch from iphone call to headset every time an at-least 50° of calls hung up before i got there. It was a constant annoying race each call an if i missed someone important i would be upset an to some it all up. Thats what this purchased left me $300 broker an upset.Im contacting sony “support” maybe i will update if possable
I bought these headphones about 2 weeks ago after researching which headphones to get for months. I have been an AirPod user since they came out, but found they weren't giving me what I needed in terms of noise cancelling features and sound quality. I would say the AirPods are easier to control (e.g. skipping a track or going to previous track) but the XM4s are absolutely brilliant for my noise sensitivity in public. I find it so much easier to concentrate with these headphones on (even if they are not playing any music). They have the option to let you hear what's going on around you, and automatically change to allow you to hear speech when they detect it. I have found that I am also listening to music at a lower volume with the XM4s than I did with AirPods. I used to have my music at maximum volume through AirPods, but I only have it halfway up with these headphones. I would say that these are not the best option if you are going to be using headphones for Zoom / Teams meetings regularly - I prefer my AirPods for such meetings.Overall, the sound quality is amazing, the noise cancelling is amazing if you have ADHD but like to get work done in a coffee shop or if you have noise sensitivity issues. These are perfect for Uni students and I see plenty XM4s around the Uni library! They are also cute if you want a pair of headphones that won't ruin your outfit. The noise cancelling feature is so good that you can't hear yourself sigh in the library when trying to write your dissertation! I gave 4/5 stars just because I think these aren't the best for taking virtual meetings with.
For a summary up front, these are a good product at a premium price point. There are some things I really like about these, but there are a few issues I have with them as well.Sound Quality: Very good. I'm not an audiophile so won't try and assess this in detail, but they sound great to my ears.Comfort and Fit: They fit me well, and are comfortable for extended periods, they do tend to get a but stuffy and sweaty after a while, but I think that is going to be true for any closed back headphones.Noice Cancelling: These are a huge upgrade over my last set of headphones. While they do not cancel out all noise they reduce a busy city or office to a background murmur or tune a noisy computer fan out entirely.Transparency Mode: Maybe this is a me thing, but I ... While they do not cancel out all noise they reduce a busy city or office to a background murmur or tune a noisy computer fan out entirely.Transparency Mode: Maybe this is a me thing, but I struggle to follow a conversation in transparency mode, and the speak to enable it is more of a nuisance than a help. All of this means that I basically never use the feature. Unless you know that you like the XM4's implementation of this feature, don't treat it as a selling point. Now for the couple of points that bug me a little about them.Buttons/Touch controls. The buttons they have work great, and it makes me wish that it had buttons instead of the touch pad. I still often accidentally trigger the wrong function when using them (i.e. accidentally skipping when intending to change volume). It also often gets triggered inadvertently a lot whenever I am reaching up to access a top shelf, or hang out laundry. All this makes me wish for the simpler days of just having buttons.Connectivity: This is the other part of the product that I find lacking. I came to this from a aggressively mid-range set of BT headphones, which had better range and connection quality than these - even when they are set to prioritize connection strength over audio quality. In the city I get frequent stuttering and cutouts when in certain areas that clearly have high wireless traffic. Around the house I sometimes get cut outs where the audio will completely stop working for a minute if I walk a little bit too far away, even when the source device still thinks it is connected.Wired option: they have a wired option, which I consider bare minimum, but I wish the wired option also allowed you to use the media controls and microphone (many cheap sets of wired earbuds provide this level of functionality so was very surprised that these didn't). With how poor the connection can be I often revert to this mode and wish it was as functional as the wireless mode.On the whole, I am a little disappointed by the connection issues and the lack of features when using them wired, but otherwise very happy with them.
I was so hesitant on splurging on a pair of headphones since the price of these are quite outrageous to say the least, but I finally hit the trigger when it was $121 off. I’ve had these headphones now for probably 2 weeks and I must say, it has become my whole personality for the rest of the year. I wear these headphones religiously, even when I’m just out doing errands or going out on my walks. I immediately put these on as well if I’m doing school work and when I do light work out at the gym. The moment I turn it on, the atmosphere around me just immediately goes quiet. The noise cancelling on them are excellent (I can not really compare them to other noise cancelling headphones as these are my first pair) along with the sound quality of these headphones. I can ... I can also say that even after hours of wear on these headphones, it has never given me a headache. I’ve had problems with headsets/headphones giving me a headache after a while of wear due to me wearing glasses since I am very much blind and these headphones are the first ones to never give me a headache, I can literally wear them the whole say and I would be fine. (I also have problems with earphones making my ears feel sore and itchy, which is why I’m looking into good quality and comfy headphones.) I also have a small head and they fit me just fine. (: Oh and I forgot to mention, but the battery life on these are crazy, I have not charged mine for probably 5-6 days now and they’re still up and going. Overall, I love them! I’m not some headphones connosseur or anything or a pro at reviewing them to their fullest extent, but they’re very nice! It’s very much worth the price (especially when you get them on sale *wink wink*) and I would definitely recommend it to people who are thinking of getting them!
Love these so much! > $250 or less is PERFECT deal. I like these more than the XH-1000XM5 because these for easier storage in backpacks. Let me say 2 things, these are NOT GYM FRIENDLY. I do see people wearing these at the gym but the leather does not feel like it is meant for sweat or being wet for extended periods of time. I am biased because personally I prefer how wireless earbuds feel but defintely feel more like the type of headphones you would wear at an office, library, bus, or even home if you have loud roommates/neighbors.noise canceling is phenomenal! I love wearing these when I vacuum because if i turn the music loud enough, i can barely hear the vacuum!Touch controls: I gotta say that I am not a fan of touch controls, i would prefer physical buttons ... Theoretically you can just jam out to music but if someone starts talking to you, this feature is the best!My only pain with these headphones is that they are heavy and get SUPER HOT after an hour or two. I find that after extended periods of time with the noise canceling mode on, my ears start to turn red and sweat. I hate this alot but it seems to be my personal experience with ALL noise cancelling headphones i have tried. The QC 45s are easier to wear for extended periods of time if that is more important to you but there is always going to be something that can be improved upon in every product so pick your poisonQC45: Extended comfort + Physical buttonsvsXM4s: Ambient Sound pass through + superior features
