I installed this stereo in my 1995 MR2 to add a bit of modernity and functionality, but there are some annoying issues with this unit I can't get over. I'm surprised this has been revered so much by the other reviewers. The good: Carplay on a budget. Has pre-outs for active speakers, and a microphone. It also uses your car's illumination wire to dim the display when you turn your lights on. Sound quality is decent but this is more down to the amplifier if you're using active audio, like I am. I can't speak for passive audio (driven by the stereo itself). The bad: you already know that it's only wired, and only Apple carplay. I suppose that can be expected at this price point. The touch-screen is also fairly cheap-feeling and plasticky. The main issues I have with ... MoreI installed this stereo in my 1995 MR2 to add a bit of modernity and functionality, but there are some annoying issues with this unit I can't get over. The touch-screen is also fairly cheap-feeling and plasticky. The main issues I have with this unit are technical. The first being, the power aerial signal is always active when the unit is on, not just when using the radio function. If your car has a retractable antenna, this means that the antenna will always be extended when the stereo is on. Since I don't use the radio much, I've just resorted to unplugging the power antenna.Worse still, this head unit has only volatile memory, no storage. Meaning, if it loses power, for instance being disconnected from the battery, all its settings are reset and it goes back into demo mode. This wouldn't be too much of an issue, but it drains a whopping 170mA when the car is off! Easily enough to drain the battery in a week or two. So, I've just wired it to accessory power and leaving it on default settings every time. There's also no way to turn the head unit off without turning the car off. Finally, the physical volume knob is great, and why I chose it, but it would have been great to have physical forward and backward buttons too.

I bought this as a replacement for Kenwood receiver that stopped working after about 7 years. The main features I wanted was the ability to add a backup camera, Apple Car play, a USB port on the front, and volume control knob instead of the up/down arrow keys found on my old Kenwood radio (which used to get stuck periodically). The overall interface is easy to use. Apple car play works very well and the sound quality using the phone interface much better than my previous radio receiver. I opted to get the Sirius radio add on as well as a backup camera and both work very well. The only kind of minor thing I would change is that the time on the radio turner is a bit too small (I like glancing at the clock in the car as I don't use a watch) and the radio information ... MoreI bought this as a replacement for Kenwood receiver that stopped working after about 7 years. I replaced my 2005 Lexus LS430 dated cassette/CD changer with this Sony radio, primary I wanted to add Apple CarPlay and now it's up to date 21st century. I bought a custom trim kit with amplifier adapter from BeatSonic and it retained the factory A/C, Navigation, amplifier and backup camera. I am extremely happy with the Sony radio simple menu and easy to use, the plus is with the volume knob! I was able to connect the Sony radio with the factory Mark Levinson sound system, it's now like a new system much better detail and clarity, the most obvious is now it sound like home stereo in the car cabin.I was able to get an angle USB adapter to streamline the setup along with my Audioquest Jitterbug and Cinnamon lighting cable. Bought this for $299, one of the cheaper radio receivers. I bought after reading reviews and getting advice from Best Buy employees. This seemed like the best match for the price. I got it for my 2017 Honda civic sport, hatchback, standard keyCONS: Reviewers applauded itsvolume knob, but that thing is SMALL and annoyingly placed right above the usb port. I have tiny hands, but if you have big hands you’ll might be annoyed by it. I usually just control the volume with the steering wheel controls. I’m also not digging the front usb connection, I thought I could still use my other usb connectors to connect to CarPlay but I no longer can. And it doesn’t connect to CarPlay via bluetooth, it’s a simple Bluetooth connection for music. The usb is kinda ugly looking sticking out right there too, in my opinion. & I don’t really like how you can’t control the brightness, it just has an auto dim setting and I feel like it’s still too bright at night.PROS: aside from all the annoyances, I think it’s still good for the price. I like the audio settings it has like the equalizer, DSO and extra bass settings. It has connectivity to my back up camera, however has been glitching lately but Best Buy told me it must be the interface that needs switching out. So ima do that. It has steering wheel control for the music skipping but not the voice command. You can hold the audio volume knob down to control Siri which is cool. No problems with touch screen so far. It so has a rear view camera button but it says to shut off the engine when ur click it.. and am confused why it’s there if you can’t access while engine is on.In the end I’d probably pay a little more to not have to connect my usb straight to the receiver, get something with brightness control too. Would be great to have a bigger volume knob. Not bad for the price but curious what other options could have been for like $100-200 more. Do note, you will need to pay like $200 more for other connections and accessories you need for the free installation such as the steering wheel control, camera connection, harness, mic, etc. it beats having a radio without CarPlay in the end so I’m grateful, but will probably want to upgrade it when I can. The free installation is easy and you just need to make sure you reserve an appointment when or before buying! Be sure to have everything ready for when you go. Hope this helps
Installed in a 2007 Nissan Frontier (no Rockford system, which might affect compatibility)For the price this thing is amazing. the Geek Squad installation did an amazing job at my location. Professionally installed. The device has CarPlay (requires to be plugged in), and functions as expected. Bluetooth connects quickly, I love the AUX option in the front. The only complaints I have are nitpicks: lack of customization of the screen, the touch screen isn't responsive as modern phones, and the knob for volume control is tiny. These are neglibile, as everything else functions very well. The microphone it comes with surprised me, it is excellent!!! I can actually comfortably make phone calls, and not worry about switching to phone speaker while driving. For the ... MoreInstalled in a 2007 Nissan Frontier (no Rockford system, which might affect compatibility)For the price this thing is amazing. the Geek Squad installation did an amazing job at my location. I own a 2006 F150 Ford truck and wanted to do an upgrade to apple car play with a display. This product absolutely fits the need. The display is large enough to read while driving. I also purchased the trim kit and wiring harness for easy install. With the trim kit, it looks like it was factory installed. Plugged my phone in and the apple car play worked like a champ. My music and map apps worked flawless. The USB plug on the front display makes it easy to plug your phone in. This is needed for the maps to display. The Blue Tooth also works without plugging the phone in if you just want Music apps to work. I highly recommend this product.
Just installed this over the weekend. It fit well in my 2006 GMC Sierra 3500. I didn't really need the car-play part of it, I picked this one because of the volume knob, and the USB port in the front. Sounds pretty good, but not fantastic. The stock radio had more bass then this one does. I turned the loudness on and set the EQ which is easy to do. It seemed to pair with my phone easily iphone 12 mini. I just mainly needed it to stream music from my phone and handsfree phone calls, which it seems to do fine. Seems like it was on the top end price wise of the lower featured double din touch screens. But I went with it because normally Sony is pretty reliable. It doesn't do anything that outstanding, but there are no glaring faults that I have found in it so far ... MoreJust installed this over the weekend. It fit well in my 2006 GMC Sierra 3500. I bought this stereo to get a backup camera but mainly to have the USB plug-in for my MP3 player which is an old one and not Bluetooth. The reason for the one star is that the screen is completely useless when the sun is shining. I’ve adjusted the brightness to full and it still looks like it’s turned off 90 percent of the time. The screen also seems a bit flimsy. There’s a lot of give to it when you’re touching the screen. The screen in my Jeep Grand Cherokee which came with a factory touchscreen has no give to it when you’re using it and you can always see the screen. When I’m backing up in the sun and I want to see the screen, I have to lean over the center console and take my sunglasses off to see it which takes attention away from also looking around for ... MoreI bought this stereo to get a backup camera but mainly to have the USB plug-in for my MP3 player which is an old one and not Bluetooth. I definitely do not recommend this stereo.
This is a great stereo for the money. The screen is large and clear with sharp colors. It has a volume knob that is very convenient and easy to adjust rather than using up/down buttons like on most other stereos. There is also a "Home" button located on the top left that quickly takes you back to the main screen. The touch screen is very responsive and icons are large enough to easily select what you intended while keeping your eyes mainly on the road. The Apple CarPlay feature works great and connects instantly using the USB port located on the front of the stereo allowing hands-free calling and navigation as well as music control.I had Best Buy install the stereo as well as a license plate mounted backup camera.
