Two years have passed since Peter Parker first hit the streets of New York City as the conflicted crime-fighter Spider-Man. Now he finds himself battling his most diabolical villain yet, the mechanized, multi-tentacled Doc Ock. The nefarious Doc Ock was once Dr. Otto Octavius, a brilliant nuclear physicist. But a freak accident transformed him from a timid researcher to a criminally insane megalomaniac who blames Spider-Man for his horrible transformation. Now the scientist Peter once idolized for his remarkable intellect has marked our web-slinger for death.Experience total freedom as you soar through the concrete canyons of a living, breathing Manhattan, complete with familiar landmarks and bustling, traffic-clogged streets. Combat petty thugs and aid NYC citizens in challenging side-quests, or pursue the lunatic Doc Ock and other classic Spider-Man rivals. The decision is yours.

First off, I must say that this game was positively excellent. Though it had little replay value, I really enjoyed it while it lasted. The Pros! The web-slinging is AMAZING. For the first time you are given an entire island to websling around. The environment is practically endless and there is so much to explore. The random crime setup is nice, since they give you extra brownie points. But oh my goodness, there is nothing like diving off of a tall building and watching Spidey tear through the sky. And the rebound of the web slinging is positively perfect! The basic mechanics that are signature to Spiderman are here, and it makes for a fantastic time. Random crimes will also pop up here and there for you to tackle or you can approach citizens who call out for you to inform you of other crimes in progress. Crimes range from muggings, robberies, car jackings, people falling from buildings, mechs blowing up the streets, and even (gulp)... little children losing their balloons. Completing main missions and side missions will grant you hero points, which you use to upgrade Spider-Man's abilities in combat and web swinging, which you will need to defeat Spider-Man's many foes. The game follows the story of the second movie, but as is common in most movie.

Not all movie based and licensed games have to be completely average or just plain bad. Spider-Man 2 isn't just the best Spider-Man game of all time, it's possibly the best super hero game of all time as well. Stepping above and beyond the first game, Spider-Man 2 allows you to take on the role of the web-slinger as you swing and fight your way through a completely free roaming New York City. And when I say free roaming, I mean free roaming. For the first time ever in a Spider-Man game, you can touch down on the ground and interact with pedestrians and accomplish missions to earn points to build up your stats and abilities. Along the way, you'll take on villains such as the Rhino and Mysterio, and of course Doctor Octopus, and film stars Tobey Maguire, Kirstin Dunst, and Alfred Molina reprise their roles from the film (and the great Bruce Campbell is back as well as your helpful guide throughout the game). The voice acting is great, the graphics are pretty good while your swinging (once you hit the ground running some of the other character models become a bit blocky), but the biggest downside of Spider-Man 2 is that the missions get repetitive after a while. Mostly it's rescue him/her, beat up group of people that's jumping you, stop robbery, help out cops, etc, etc., but you can't argue with the overall package. Between the Spidey games and the X-Men Legends games (don't get me started on the X-Men 3 game though), Activision knows how to do licensed super hero games.
Spider-Man 2: The Game, released in 2004 for the PS2 and XBOX, is definitely a great Spider-Man game. On virtually every "best Spider-Man games of all time" lists, you're bound to see this one somewhere near, or at, the top. While I do think this game was extremely revolutionary for its time, and is still good fun even to this day, I don't think this one quite lives up to the reputation nostalgic fans have given it over the years.I remember playing this back when it released, and the best thing about this game, by far, is the open ended New York City you get to use as Spidey's playground. It's awesome. You have all kinds of moves and tricks at your disposal for traversing the city's skyline, and the sense of speed, sheer variety of motion, sense of momentum, and the visuals for the city itself still hold up wonderfully. Lighted skyscraper windows and buildings as far as the eye can see are still impressive, though the draw distance isn't amazing. Thankfully, the developers hid this flaw to the best of their abilities. When I first played this, I would get so caught up in just exploring the city as Spidey, that I would put off doing missions for as long as possible, and honestly, that's probably the best way to play Spider-Man 2.Graphically, the game just passes as OK. Other than the city itself looking awesome for its time, the character models are all pretty weak. Something about Spider-Man seems off, especially around his head and eyes, and none of the other charact.
It's so much fun to simply spin webs and fly around New York City in Spider-Man 2 that you may never bother to finish the game. It trumps its impressive predecessor with one word: Freedom! Not that any of Activision's earlier Spidey games have been slouches, but in Spider-Man 2, you really will feel the thrill (and hectic pace) of being Peter Parker. The plot traces that of the film and its villain, Dr. Octopus, but the game expands to include appearances by Mysterio, Black Cat, Rhino, and other Marvel folks. Would you prefer to run through the streets on foot? Or maybe hitch a ride atop one of the hundreds of moving cars? With tons of mini-missions and goals strewn about the city, and various icons to collect, Manhattan is yours to explore-anywhere, any time, all the time. Doing so becomes a joy thanks to the locomotion system. Web-swinging takes a little practice, but in short order, you'll feel massively powerful, shooting webs that visibly auto-attach to buildings and trees, zooming around corners, pulling 360-degree loops, even grabbing onto a helicopter and getting an aerial tour of the city. The city looks great; the pedestrian models could be higher res, but it's a sweet Big Apple with cool day/night effects and detailed textures on both machines (though the Xbox version looks noticeably prettier from a distance). Spidey.
This is one of my favourite games ever. It's not quite perfect, though (might as well start with the cons so I can end on a good note). For one thing, while the action graphics (as in, while you are actually playing the game) are superb, for some reason the cut-scene graphics are horrible. Characters are square-looking, glitchy (Peter Parker shakes uncontrollably whenever he makes a hand gesture), poorly defined and generally irritating to look at. Also, the anonymous characters' (random passersby, etc.) voice dubs are rather annoying as well.Apart from that, however, I have to say I love this game. Its best aspects are definetely the controls and camera angles. The controls are a bit complicated at first (although I've seen worse), but there is a clear tutorial at the beginning of the game and, once you get the hang of it, it's smoooooooth sailing. Actually, the basic controls are pretty easy, it's up to you if you want to learn the combos and the more fancy tricks. Spider-man's movements are incredibly fluid and pleasant to look at and New York City has been recreated in very great detail. The game has the same format as Grand Theft Auto, which means you can take breaks in between missions and just explore the city and do smaller missions or just swing around as much as you like. And the camera angles are very well-placed, which makes this game a real visual treat (apart from the cut-scenes): you'll be impressed by views of the sun setting over the Hudson river, seen from th.
As far as I can recall, this was the game that started the city sandbox on the PS2. I'd liked the original PS1 Spider-man game, and tolerated the first movie game which was literally the same as the PS1 only with better graphics, story, and characters. The engine was almost identical. I didn't have a PS2 so when I saw Spider-man 2 on PC I was really excited. Unfortunately, if you know the story Activision tricked customers and the PC version was a steaming pile. So after all these years I FINALLY got to play the real Spider-man 2. Worth the weight?Well, in a word yes. For a movie tie-in, which is admittedly a fairly low bar, this game is a masterpiece...with a caveat. You can swing around the city with really nice web controls, however be forewarned they're fairly tricky to learn. The missions are almost invariably fun and don't push you too hard with chases and scenarios where you have to swing around perfectly to meet goals. There's also optional questing by talking to people on the street. So what's the hitch, well the game is short, really short. Sure there's a big city, but it's at the expense of more real missions. The side quests are fun, but the number of different tasks you can do as side quests is tiny. You basically get attacked, have to rescue a falling guy, take someone to the hospital, stop an armored car heist, or stop a car. That's pretty much it. They really needed to put some more variety into it or at least some more varied dialog. The only oth.
