I bought an indoor trainer for lockdown and started riding to power inside. I made some great gains indoors and since the summer has come I've want to do my training outdoors. The L side stages looked like the best choice since the R side is available seperately so when I want the dual power I can simply bolt it on.The installation procedure was extremely easy, just take your old crank off and slide this one on. Changing the battery seems easy to do. I quickly paired it with my headunit and downloaded the stages app to update the firmware. The power seems to be in line with what my turbo trainer says (also my heart rate). Excited to put some serious miles on this thing outdoors!

However, after less than a year I ran into trouble with power dropouts and spikes. After the same problem happening with a replacement pair I decided to make a change to this stages.Provided you have a torque wrench and the shimano Hallow tool, installation of the crank arm is easily. This product has been a perfect example of 'fit and forget' i.e. I have had no problems with connecting or with dropouts. Generally a great piece of kit
18 May 2021

I bought my power meter in October 2020, so thought I would give it a bit of use before giving it a review. Generally I have been happy enough with the product. I am satisfied that the power data it shows is fairly accurate, or as accurate as it can be. My only issue is with the battery cover! On a ride the other day I calibrated it before setting off and thought no more about it until after the cafe stop. I was moving along and was getting no data. I assumed that maybe it had gone to sleep due to the stop. Sadly it wasn't that. It was actually the fact that the battery cover and therefore the battery were probably somewhere on the main A road going in to Worksop!! I've had to order a knock off copy of the cover from Ebay, otherwise it would be an expensive crank ... MoreI bought my power meter in October 2020, so thought I would give it a bit of use before giving it a review. The initial Sigma Sports service was spot on as usual.

+Product arrived within a reasonable time.+Product was in perfect condition+Works as expected, installs in minutes+ Pairs quickly over Ant+ / Bluetooth in order to get onto Zwift which was the only reason for the purchase.-Stagespower app seems to take a stupidly long time to pair with the app to perform a zero reset. It pairs fine with Garmin and Zwift on the same phone so I guess it must be the app. The app is a necessary component of the power meter as it recalibrates the power meter so this is annoying.- Drops out fairly frequently from Zwift for periods of 2-3 seconds. It does this simultaneously from Zwift on iPad and Zwift Companion on iPhone so I assume it must be the power meter not the device. Mildly annoying. Would be more so if you were a hard core ... More+Product arrived within a reasonable time.+Product was in perfect condition+Works as expected, installs in minutes+ Pairs quickly over Ant+ / Bluetooth in order to get onto Zwift which was the only reason for the purchase.-Stagespower app seems to take a stupidly long time to pair with the app to perform a zero reset. Great value power meter... if it worked!
9 November 2020

Wanted to have a power meter for my gravel bike (avid trainer with PM for my triathlon and road bike) and after careful studies, the Stages seemed a great option in terms of value for money. Unfortunately, I was never able to get it to work properly: the unit was reading my power very intermittently, but most of the time was not reading anything. Just did a 100k gravel ride yesterday and when all was done my reported average power was 1W, and my max average power over 20 minutes was 4W! Just not working unfortunately. The gen 3 was supposed to have fixed the random connectivity issues that were reported on earlier versions... not sure this is the case based on my individual experience but I am hoping this was just a faulty unit so I am considering buying the same ... MoreWanted to have a power meter for my gravel bike (avid trainer with PM for my triathlon and road bike) and after careful studies, the Stages seemed a great option in terms of value for money. It works well

This is a new experiment for me, having used relatively little cycling tech previously except for navigation. Gradual price reductions have brought power meter technology to a reasonable cost – I would not have spent more.It was straightforward to fit the crank, although I did not have a Shimano crank installation tool, so at only £3.00 it might be sensible to bundle one with each crank. Once installed, it was simple to get the meter to pair with my Wahoo Elemnt Roam, and there has been an uninterrupted data stream since then. The CR2032 battery life seems OK: 80 hours so far without needing replacing, and no issues with the battery compartment seal. But what does the data mean? A 128 km/1,400 metre ascent ride to Blandford Forum and back indicated an average power of 148 watts with a transient peak of 610 watts and a Normalized Power of 161 watts, but I was somewhat crushed to see data that suggested that 46% of the ride was in the “aerobic threshold” power zone.I don’t ride competitively or attempt structured training. For me, this is primarily about comparing myself to myself, particularly as I get older. I am 64 (beyond-Mamil) and I intend to keep riding, but there is usually a fading of muscle strength with age: what American nutritionist Irwin Rosenberg called sarcopenia. So, remember you heard it here first: it’s a sarcopenia meter.

Perfect example of a good product from a good shop

Sigma had this reduced significantly that it was a no-brainer purchase. I already had my eye on the OG 4iii power meter but held off after researching Specialized improving on it with a better case protecting against water ingress. Bought immediately, and took the bike into the Hampton Wick store, as I wanted to ensure it would fit against my chain stay. The case is larger than most power meters so it's worth confirming. They kindly fitted it for me at no extra charge and off I went. The Specialized app is basic and you only really need it to zero the power meter and check the battery life. My Wahoo Elemnt Bolt picked it up immediately and off I went. 700KMs later and no issues, works as expected. Would recommend to anyone looking for a crank based meter.

Reliable but has accuracy issues
18 July 2020

I am happy with the reliability of this power meter. I haven’t had any problems with dropouts and it works reliably. However, I have tested the power meter by riding up steep hills which I accurately know the elevation of and using a mathematical model that accounts for drag, rolling resistance, overall acceleration etc... I can accurately predict my power. On average, the stages reads 4% low, but in some cases has almost been as much as 10% low (standard deviation 2%). This demonstrates that the power meter is inaccurate and not consistent. This could be attributed to left-right balance, but having ridden a Garmin Vector dual sided power meter for many years, with a consistent 50-50 balance that also had an average error of less than 1% with the same test, I am ... MoreI am happy with the reliability of this power meter. This problem could be alleviated with a scale factor but Stages doesn’t allow you to put in a scale factor, which I think is ridiculous for a single sided power meter where many users know their L-R balance and could therefore compensate for it.

Transformation!

Our leisure centre changed all its spin bikes for ones with power meters and I began to realise the importance of training at power rather than heart rate. At the new, lower prices, I felt it justifiable to spend what is still quite a lot of money on a power meter. And go L/R to get the full picture. With the recent poor weather I've only been out the once but what a difference it makes to the ride. Understanding what is happening instantly! I need more rides to establish how much of the available info to display. Currently max, ave, 10s and l/r balance. And still need to do a FTP (although I have a good idea from 45minute spin classes).I looked at various power meters and chose the Stages as a direct replacement for my existing chain set. And now I don't have the cadence magnet on the crank arm anymore it looks a bit neater!Staff at Stages were very helpful while I dithered about what to buy.Money well spent.
