Low down, it detects the cable, great!!, a bit further up the wall, it detects it as a stud, not so great!, and at about eye line, it will either detect nothing at all, a cable (sometimes) which is apparently about 150mm wide!!, or a stud again, not great at all!!. I will probably try to return it as unfit for purpose. Sorry.

Good, but it’s not very intuitive to use. Needs more instructions.

Great price range. It works as advertised. More instructions are definitely needed. The electrical detection isn’t separate. It’s all switched on at once. The instructions don’t explain what tone is for what. The stud is hard to find if there is any electrical in the wall. Turn off the main power to the house and you can find the stud easily. If there is live power in the wall when searching for a stud it will go berserk. It would be great if the power detection wasn’t so wide spread and more accurate so one could avoid it more accurately and just locate the studs, but no, it gets overwhelmed detecting electricity and finding a stud then is near impossible. It would be great to switch between detection modes, but for the price, shutting off the mains solved it for ... MoreGreat price range. It works as advertised. Bought this to put up a shelf where I had trouble detecting a stud by feel. Turns out there was no stud to be found. Have used it a number of times since for other jobs and it's been bang on every time. Readings are pretty consistent although I have to agree it would be nice to have instructions. I had to google how to use it as it's not intuitive from the get go. Glad to own it though.

Has its limitations
23 December 2020

I bought this out of interest and used it on a few jobs over the past couple of months. It's an electrostatic detector very similar the wire and pipe finders of old that ran off 9v batteries.I like the design and ease of use but I think it implies more functionality than there really is here.I did find that it was reliable in finding wires in solid walls but only up to 5-6mm into plaster. In stud walls it will really struggle to give you any reading. It was successful in finding metallic pipes but not so much plastic ones.I had mixed results with stud finding. For any walls with insulated plasterboard or foil backed insulation like Celotex it was next to useless. Painted walls gave better results than with wallpaper, maybe due to static build up when you move ... MoreI bought this out of interest and used it on a few jobs over the past couple of months. Hit and miss

I looked at the comparisons and tests on YouTube which said this detector was spot on centre. I took note of the YouTube videos explaining how stud finders work and how to use them effectively. Try as I might I could not duplicate their results. 'Centre' varied on each pass. Drilled a hole and found it was on the stud edge. Will try an old-technology edge-detector in the hope it is better than this.

It works, but the instructions are terrible
26 August 2022

Ok, so I read the reviews and thought I’d give this a go. I opened the product and tried to decipher the vague diagrams on the instructions with no luck. I couldn’t get it to work. I asked my brother if he used one before and his simple instructions via text message were much better to understand, so I’ve decided to share them here in the hopes it will help someone else.“Place it on the wall then push and HOLD the button then slowly drag it along the wall, when you are over the stud it should be a constant beep. Mark this first spot as the edge of the stud. Continue moving slowly along the wall until you reach the other stud edge. Mark this spot. Centre of the stud is between these two marks. The little ready led that says ac means that there is an active ... MoreOk, so I read the reviews and thought I’d give this a go. Simple stud finder, let down by instructions
6 December 2021

The instructions are visual depictions only with few words. I guess this is so that it can be sold in many markets using the same packaging. Once you figure out that the switch is not an on/off switch but one you have to keep your finger on for it to operate, it works fine. You also need to use the finder in a sweeping motion, not too fast and not too slow. How you define the speed is difficult so there's a bit of trial and error. Sweeping perpendicular to where you expect the stud wall to be revealed their positions. You can sweep in both directions to make sure you can determine an approximate centre. The finder has a centre hole to make your mark, which helps. It also detected a live which I knew was there, so that was reassuring. Not sure if I had a faulty one but returned it. It seemed to pick up electrical presence but it didn’t give me confidence in finding stud positions. Why don’t people just put marks on floor Ect. Better instructions would help rather than using Utube. Think you would need some practice with known stud positions to get a better feel for device.

Terrible - don't waste your money

AppallingSimply doesn't work.Doesn't detect studs.Doesn't detect metalwork.Doesn't detect live cables. Also a bit on the large side compared to other devices of this ilk.Printing on the product was so poor that the QR code was un-scannable.A really really poor product. Surprising for Stanley.Surprising for ToolStation. You should be ashamed that you stock this product, you should look for a different brand at a similar price point (your next cheapest was about 3 times the price - ok for a pro but more than I was willing to pay for occasional DIY use).

Utter rubbish. I'd read some of the other poor reviews and thought maybe the other guys just weren't using it right. Apologies to them! I bought this as my trusty stud/wire finder has gone AWOL. The old one was a £5 one from a french supermarket and as long as you set the sensitivity right it would accurately find both edges of studs and any wires hidden in the wall. This one just gives random signals anywhere and they aren't even consistent or repeatable. On one pass it would say there was a wire and then on another pass that there wasn't one. It said there were wires where I know there aren't any and it missed wires where I know there are some. As such this is an utterly useless, even dangerous, piece of junk.
