My laptop has a 3.1 Gen 2 port and I wanted to ensure I was using the best available connection for some livestream cameras, using all available bandwidth. This hub was the ticket. I was able to use one camera as YUY and the other mjpeg with this hub, at first I was bummed. However, once I set all 3 cameras to mjpeg I had success with the live stream. Great product, I may decide to order a 3d printed mount so that I can secure the hub to a table or stand better during the live stream.

This is a pretty simple device but I have to say I like it. I think that this product was well though out. Anyone who have just USB-C will love this hub.The device is small and I like the layout of the USB-3.1 the two plus two design works better then in a strip.I think the hub has a good weight to it which helps to keep it stable when multiple devices are plugged in.Overall this item works and the design is good.I would highly recommend this itemI received this item in exchange for an unbiased review.

Pros: Compact, solidly built.Cons: A slightly longer connection cable would help.

I have been using it for a while now, I just connect 1 sensor to it for my Oculus Rift and as of current, I have no issues with it. As for investigating why it is still 3.0, I did not even bother with it anymore. I saw that manufacturer tried to contact me, but I did not even notice this in my Home Essentials Direct account. Overall, it might be incompatibility issues since the manufacturer did state that it was 3.1 Gen 2 and they have tested. But I'l just trust their word for it. So I am redacting my old review and increasing it to 4 stars Old Review: It was stated that it is a USB 3.1 Gen 2 and explicitly stating here on Home Essentials Direct and on their website spec sheet that is capable of 10gbps which is 3.1 gen 2 speed. But upon investigating and doing some test, I could not pass the 5gbps. As one of the other reviewers here, he had the same results. I have rummaged through device manager and guess what, it was a 3.0 hub. If it was advertised truthfully, stating that it was 3.0, I would give it a 5 out 5 on overall rating. A little bit expensive but all the materials looks high quality. And if they were to actually have it run 3.1 gen 2 speed and that is just icing on the cake. Unfortunately that is not the case. Severely dissatisfied. My other rig which has 3.1 gen 2 USB expansion powers my 3 Oculus sensors flawlessly. I will not bash Startech. They make some pretty kick A$$ stuff, good bit of it I have. However, lately I have noticed some things related to some of the new products that have me concerned that they are slipping into the “made in China” mold... this type C unit is a good example of that. It functions as it should, but for what the cost is I thought it would have a metal body. This is ABS plastic. A rigid type C cable will cause it to flip over... also it needs a way to power the hub so that you can run ext HDDs from it. If there’s only one type C port on your machine, you will be selling yourself short if you plan on running more than SSD and thumb drives on this splitter/hub. Also if the body had an option of a removable cable with a type A female socket, it would ... MoreI will not bash Startech. They make some pretty kick A$$ stuff, good bit of it I have. Also if the body had an option of a removable cable with a type A female socket, it would give you more options. Personally I hate the “type C” connectors’ design, too dainty for my taste, and are easily made loose killing the connection... plus on having those on the actual unit. Seems almost like this was made to give 4 USB 3.1 Gen 1 low voltage devices all maximum data I/O,
As long as the PC's USB C port is gen2 or better, all three hub ports are recognized as at least USB 3.0 (3.1 Gen1) or better, so Oculus does not complain. I am not sure if the 4 hub ports are also gen 2 (@10 gbit/s) when they are all filled, but they meet the gen1 requirements with enough power for the rift and 2 sensors (I don't have a 3rd sensor to test). It would be nice if the USB C connector was removable so that you could use longer cords, or store it in tight areas without risking damage to the cable connection (like from bending it). -Tested on Scar II and Prime X370 Pro
Plugged into Motherboard ( X470/Ryzen 2700X ) USB-C port , all 4 USB-A ports test at 459.1 MB/s Read and 453.1 MB/s Write with a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB mounted in a Vantec NexStar USB 3.1 Gen 2 external enclosure ( NST-270A31-BK ). Thats ALMOST what the drive gets hooked up directly to a SATA III port, and in an actual transfer...I transferred a 45GB folder of 4K and 1080P movies that was on the drive...to the 1TB NVMe boot drive on the motherboard. It transferred at 405 MB/s for the entire transfer, no buffer shenanigans...just straight raw speed for the entire transfer. Awesome little hub here !!!
OK, first of all, the TOP USB ports are really great on the go. Second, it worked in Linux, MacOS, and Windows without any extra hoop-jumping.And MOST importantly: It is FAST. I connected 4 different kinds of devices and all performed at full speed. Obviously the hub itself is rated faster than USB-3, but, I was hopeful that 4 USB-3 devices at once would mean all would be quick, and I was not disappointed.Only thing to note, is that there's no option for extra power, so if your device can't cough up the electrons, and a connected USB3 device draws too much, it just won't work. Trivial overall unless you use heavy power devices. For thumb drives, average pocket-sized mobile HDD's, SSDs, cameras, etc. this thing just works, and it works well.I received this ... MoreOK, first of all, the TOP USB ports are really great on the go. Seems great! Running two external BD/DVD drives and an external HDD unit without any issues. However, I don't know how well it does power delivery, as all three of those drives are independently powered. The cable is fairly short, but works well for me since it's hidden behind everything.
Works well but can get hot with drives under load. Have it connected to 3.1 port on PC via USB-C extension cable and USB-C to USB 3.1-A adapter, getting close to SATA III speeds with NVME m.2 external drive. A bit pricey, though, and needs rubber feet for bottom of unit to keep from slipping on desk. Nice and compact. Might work even better if connected directly to USB-C, which I cannot do, unfortunately.
