Built quality is very good. It offers 2 thunderbolt 3 port, one for input, one for expansion. Beside that it offers one display port. The port configuration is exactly the same as Akitio Node mini. But it is longer than Akitio Node mini in dimension, making it more adaptable to be used as GPU enclosure, even though it is not officially endorsed. Nevertheless this enclosure has a green colored one piece motherboard while the Akitio features a black 2 pieces motherboard. So StarTech has done some of its own design here. It has been running for 4 months without any problem. I installed a ASUS phenix GTX1050ti in it and bought a 12V 120W PSU to offer more power. The stock 70W PSU is a high quality one. With MacBooks providing so few video outputs on their laptops, this allows me to put a deck link duo 2 in it and have 4 separate SDI outputs.

Thunderbolt expansion chassis must not be used much, as I do not see a lot of info on the web about these. Works for some people, but mot for me. Wanted to use the expander box for a 10G network. Tried several Intel network NICs that work on other PCs, with no luck.

For the flexibility it adds to any thunderbolt 3 equipped device (desktop, mobile workstation/laptop etc.) the price is WELL worth it. Used it with a BlackMagic DeckLink Duo 3 card & a Dell Precision 7720 mobile workstation and it is fantastic.
I am using StarTech.com TB31PCIEX16 as the eGPU for my MacBook Pro laptops 2014/2015 to run Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter with my 32inch 4K monitor. Product works perfectly with my old Mac thunderbolt 2 laptops. It also connects well via Apple Thunderbolt Monitor thunderbolt port and via thunderbolt 3 dock in device-daisy chaining. The Chassis also improves graphic performance and internet browsing experience on my new windows 10 laptop with a built-in Intel UHD 620 Graphics. WebGL Aquarium Test showed 90% GPU boost across all my laptops. I installed the AMD Radeon RX550 graphics card that does not require an external power supply. The fan is very noisy on Chassis so I replaced it with Noctua NF-A6x25 Fan, 3-Pin 60mm. I had high hopes for this expansion. My use case is simple: I want to enable Firewire on a new Windows 10 Pro x64 laptop that has USB-C and USB 2.0. The main problem is that no laptops have a viable Firewire-capable hardware interface anymore. It used to be possible to enable Firewire via PCI Express card, and those have gone the way of the Dodo bird also. I have a Allen & Heath ZEDR16 Mixer that is Firewire only. Very nice, very expensive and I'm not able to use it any longer because Firewire compatibility seems to be isolated to only desktop PCIe expansion. I purchased the bundled deal from StarTech. The TB3 enclosure was 'supposed' to be compatible with USB-C (which I do have). I installed the device properly, and it was recognized in Windows 10 Pro x64, and immediately threw up a warning message that 'I may experience limited features due to compatibility issues'. Upon further research, I came to find out the following (via Microsoft) A Thunderbolt host can recognize and use a USB-C device, but a USB-C host cannot use a Thunderbolt 3 device. I I confirmed with StarTech that they have no enclosures that are capable of having a PCIe16 card connected to a USB-C host. I asked about PCI Express USB adapters - No. I asked about PCIe enclosure for USB 2.0 - No. I find that really hard to believe. So now I have a $350 door stopper. Seems like StarTech should have mentioned this limitation as THE VERY FIRST THING in the product description. Designed for Apple Mac users who want to expand their systems with a PCIe16 card slot. StarTech makes great stuff - been using their products for a decade. Hardware manufacturers have made a complete mess of the USB standard with so many variations it's impossible to know what works or what compatible with each other (for the average layman). Is it M.1, M.2, USB C, USB 3, USB 3.1, or Thunderbolt 1/2/3?
I put a 1TB WD Black m.2 card inside the PCI-E slot and use it as boot for my Mac Mini 2018. The speeds are pretty incredible - almost double that of the internal SSD. It's a bit pricey when you total everything up; SSD, PCI-E card, and enclosure - but its futureproof and sure beats Apple's tax for SSD upgrades. The unit itself feels a bit cheap and flimsy. The included fan is very loud so I will be changing that out ASAP. Still a good purchase in the end.
I took a chance on this item in an effort to use the Samsung 960 PRO Series - 2TB PCIe on my iMac Pro. The adapter I used was the Ableconn PEXM2-SSD M.2 NGFF PCIe SSD to PCI Express 3.0 x 4 Host Adapter Card. I went with a non-StarTech adapter because at the time of purchase this was one seemed to be rated better by Home Essentials Direct users. My goal was to achieve same, near or faster read/write speeds than the internal storage on my iMac Pro. The good news is, the StarTech Thunderbolt chassis connected immediately. I gave this 4 stars simply for the fact that it worked. I was very apprehensive as there were literally no other reviews. But I assure you it does work. I gave this 4 stars simply for the fact that it worked. I was very apprehensive as there were literally no other reviews. But I assure you it does work. I ended up not keeping this item because I could not achieve anywhere near listed speeds for the SSD. Listed speed for write/read on the Home Essentials Direct page is 2100/3500. But I achieved 950/2300 respectively. I don't think this was the fault of the StarTech item, but I can't say for certain. My guess is it was a combination of the adapter and slower thunderbolt cable. If your situation was anything like mine (buying Apple) and you're looking at this as a cheaper solution to expanding storage, my suggestion is bite the bullet and just go for bigger internal storage. If you're looking at this for connecting other components such as a video card, I think chances are strong it will function. Edit: I forgot to mention that this comes with a fairly short thunderbolt cable and you'll probably want to purchase a longer one. Also it comes with power plugs for both U.S. and Europe. Edit 2: I managed to raid together 2 Samsung X5 m.2. The raid speed of these drives greatly outdoes my iMac Pro’s internal read/write speed. Just make sure your drives are connected to separate buses.
This statement should be in bold. this is for drives and alike not graphics cards good build quality and multiple adapters for power supplied with
Worked like a champ after I installed the computers thunderbolt drivers. using it for a PCIe Blackmagic 4k capture card.
