Clean and affordable

With MacBooks providing so few video outputs on their laptops, this allows me to put a deck link duo 2 in it and have 4 separate SDI outputs.

Does not work with Intel NUC10 system

Thunderbolt expansion chassis must not be used much, as I do not see a lot of info on the web about these. Works for some people, but mot for me. Wanted to use the expander box for a 10G network. Tried several Intel network NICs that work on other PCs, with no luck.

Fantastic product, ideal for mobile workstations

For the flexibility it adds to any thunderbolt 3 equipped device (desktop, mobile workstation/laptop etc.) the price is WELL worth it. Used it with a BlackMagic DeckLink Duo 3 card & a Dell Precision 7720 mobile workstation and it is fantastic.

I had high hopes for this expansion. My use case is simple: I want to enable Firewire on a new Windows 10 Pro x64 laptop that has USB-C and USB 2.0. The main problem is that no laptops have a viable Firewire-capable hardware interface anymore. It used to be possible to enable Firewire via PCI Express card, and those have gone the way of the Dodo bird also. I have a Allen & Heath ZEDR16 Mixer that is Firewire only. Upon further research, I came to find out the following (via Microsoft) A Thunderbolt host can recognize and use a USB-C device, but a USB-C host cannot use a Thunderbolt 3 device. I I confirmed with StarTech that they have no enclosures that are capable of having a PCIe16 card connected to a USB-C host. I asked about PCI Express USB adapters - No. I asked about PCIe enclosure for USB 2.0 - No. I find that really hard to believe. So now I have a $350 door stopper. I put a 1TB WD Black m.2 card inside the PCI-E slot and use it as boot for my Mac Mini 2018. The speeds are pretty incredible - almost double that of the internal SSD. It's a bit pricey when you total everything up; SSD, PCI-E card, and enclosure - but its futureproof and sure beats Apple's tax for SSD upgrades. The unit itself feels a bit cheap and flimsy. The included fan is very loud so I will be changing that out ASAP. Still a good purchase in the end.

The adapter I used was the Ableconn PEXM2-SSD M.2 NGFF PCIe SSD to PCI Express 3.0 x 4 Host Adapter Card. I went with a non-StarTech adapter because at the time of purchase this was one seemed to be rated better by Home Essentials Direct users. My goal was to achieve same, near or faster read/write speeds than the internal storage on my iMac Pro. The good news is, the StarTech Thunderbolt chassis connected immediately. I gave this 4 stars simply for the fact that it worked. I was very apprehensive as there were literally no other reviews. But I assure you it does work. If your situation was anything like mine (buying Apple) and you're looking at this as a cheaper solution to expanding storage, my suggestion is bite the bullet and just go for bigger internal storage. If you're looking at this for connecting other components such as a video card, I think chances are strong it will function. Edit: I forgot to mention that this comes with a fairly short thunderbolt cable and you'll probably want to purchase a longer one. Also it comes with power plugs for both U.S. and Europe. Edit 2: I managed to raid together 2 Samsung X5 m.2. The raid speed of these drives greatly outdoes my iMac Pro’s internal read/write speed. Just make sure your drives are connected to separate buses.
