I've used the Apple adapter for a few years for a CRITICAL piece of studio equipment. After a recent Windows/Thunderbolt update to accommodate TB4, the Apple adapter caused many crashes. Replaced with this after hardware manufacture suggestion, and problems corrected. This is obviously built to a better standard, or etc. Could use a slightly longer lead from the converter box to reduce tension from the port.... it's a desktop, and the lead isn't long enough for the box to reach the floor. Otherwise, no complaints.

I recently bought a G-RAID w/thunderbolt 1. I mistakenly thought that my mini display port was a thunderbolt port. I realized that I also have a thunderbolt 3 (usb type-c) port so I went online, searching for a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 1/2 adapter. Interestingly enough, there aren't many adapters online - 2-3 brands. I was a little cautious of buying this one because the Amazon reviews of this exact product doesn't match up to the B&H Photo reviews, but I was desperate to try. The item came in good condition. I plugged the adapter to my G-RAID and then into my Dell laptop - works perfectly! I was able to format my G-RAID for Windows with no problem and I don't notice any loss in data transfer speed! Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an adapter.

I have had great luck with StarTech products in the past so I don't doubt that this adapter will work great once I can get the correct firmware update. I have an Acer G9-791 Predator laptop and after speaking to tech support they notified me that i have to send my laptop to their service center for the thunderbolt 3 firmware update. The bad part is they couldn't tell me what version it would be updated to so it still may not work after I receive the laptop back. From other manufacturers I have looked at others may have similar issues. Dell thunderbolt 3 laptops I was only able to find Firmware 15. MSI Laptops it looks like only a couple of them have the thunderbolt 3 chip even active even though they have several models with thunderbolt 3 capability. Gigabyte Thunderbolt 3 motherboards have firmware 16 available. Products from Dell, Akitio, StarTech, Razer, AMD, all mention needing some newer version of Thunderbolt 3 firmware in order to use their products. I hope Intel and manufacturers start working out these issues or a class action suite will probably follow for being mislead about the technology capabilities versus what is actually possible right now. I fear that my laptop will be out of date before I can realistically use Thunderbolt 3 devices as advertised.

I bought this adapter to use with a thunderbolt 2 to FireWire 800 adapter made by Apple. I was previously using the Apple thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter and had good results but I wouldn’t say it was completely stable. The star tech adapter is quite a bit more expensive so I presumed it may help with stability.Like the Apple adapter, when I first attempted to use the adapter it took a few hours to work correctly. I’m not sure why these adapters have this issue but it is working now. I am not sure if I’m just hearing things but I believe the star tech adapter sounds better than the Apple one, but I’m unsure if that is possible but who knows. I think it may have something to do with the devices I am using with the adapter. I don’t have any thunderbolt devices to test but if I can use FireWire 400 devices, I presume thunderbolt will work no problem.
Bought one back in December to use my old Apple Thunderbolt monitor with my Dell laptop. Once I went through the process of updating *ALL* the drivers and the motherboard BIOS, it worked perfectly. And then, tragedy struck. My laptop decided to give up the ghost and I opted to get a lighter HP, so I returned my Dell docking station to work and waited for the wheels of corporate bureaucracy to churn until I got a new one for my HP. It took 7 months, but I got it this past weekend.AND IT STILL WORKED!I fired it up connected to the TB Monitor and it came right up, even before updating everything (which I did). Come Monday morning (today), I have a MASSIVE 27" monitor to work off of.
I use a Presonus Firestudio Project, which uses a Firewire connection, in my home studio. Of course, Firewire is a dead standard but I had seen that Apple had a converter to go from Firewire to Thunderbolt, so when I ordered my ASUS Republic of Gamers computer from B&H of course I ordered the Apple converter too. Unfortunately what I didn't realize was that the Thunderbolt end was the older, larger connector, and the computer had a USB-C/Thunderbolt connector that's a different size. So I still couldn't make the last mile. I ordered this converter, and it works perfectly. A couple of words of caution, though. It didn't work right away, not because of the converter but because of quirks in the Presonus hardware and their Studio One software. If you're looking at this for the same reason, be sure to remember to install Universal Control off the disk that came with the hardware first. Then download the update. It might take a few restarts to get the computer to see the Firestudio Project and get the light to turn blue. Once you've done that, if you're using Studio One and it doesn't show up automatically you can manually select it as the audio device. Then you'll be good to go. This converter has been a lifesaver. I can now record again, and I don't have to try to talk my wife into letting me buy a new audio interface!
These are the guys who make the good stuff. There are so many Apple/Mac peripherals that won't quite work with this or that - not the stuff from StarTech. It's well constructed and compatible with everything you have. I use this in a recording studio, where you literally can't afford to have things quit working during a session. You need absolute dependability and Star Tech is one of the only outfits beside Apple themselves who make stuff of this quality. You can pay for the genuine Apple stuff (the best) or save some bucks and go for this. They don't give it away, but you get Apple type quality without the 'Apple Tax'. This won't let you down.
Works great connecting my TB2 Raid to my Windows Asus ProArt Studiobook Laptop. Allows me to get continued use of my expensive Raid 2 storage array well into the future maximizing return on my investment. Highly recommended !!
The only bad thing I have to say about this thing is its price (not SCAN's fault though). It's even more expensive than the Apple version, which is obviously saying something. But at least, unlike the Apple one, it does the job. I've used it to connect my Dell Precision 5510 to a MOTU 828ES audio interface. So it goes, Dell, USB3/Dual-purpose USB3.1/TB2 socket, StartTech, Apple TB2 male-to-male cable, MOTU. What can I say - way too expensive for such a limited function, and I guess I'd've rather its built-in cable was longer so it could be off my desk, hidden and out of the way, but at least it works. Quality of the item is top notch as is the case with my other Startech gear (USB hubs.)
Initially, I purchased a used one and thought that it wasn't working. After contacting Lenovo and StarTech, troubleshooting for weeks on their sites, perusing Intel's site over and over for drivers, and concluding that there was something wrong with the adapter, I purchased a new one from NewEgg (typically my first go-to). After a month of searching online for solutions, I disabled all the security in my BIOS (temporarily) and to my surprise, the adapters worked quite well with the G-TECH RAID 8TB TB2 drive (also purchased used). In the mix of all this, I also purchased the Apple equivalent, which also then worked only after the BIOS settings were changed. My BIOS defaults set the security really high. In the mix of all this, I also purchased the Apple equivalent, which also then worked only after the BIOS settings were changed. My BIOS defaults set the security really high. Nowhere online was this solution and neither of the companies, Lenovo or Startech, knew to do this. I have asked them to consider making sure folks know if it comes up again. I believe the StarTech version, this one you're considering purchasing, is bi-directional. Apple’s is also, which should provide you with more versatility. I kept all three adapters in the event I purchase more drives. So all this to say, the product is excellent so far, but if you are having issues, disable any security options within the BIOS and be sure to have all the thunderbolt options enabled. You'll also need to make sure that you have all the most updated TB3 firmware and software updates for your model installed. Read the firmware update instructions carefully before updating. An added note: Startech has really good customer service and great products. I’ve never had a real issue with their products.
