This replaces a handful of dongles and is the only adapter I carry with me now. 2x USB3 Ports, power delivery, HDMI and Gb Ethernet. After installing drivers, it has been rock solid on my 2016 MacBook Pro,For our company, this adapter is the sole accessory we bundle with new Mac purchases, replacing the Apple Multiport Adapter (Power, HMDI, Single USB 3), Apple USB 2 Ethernet Adapter, and a small USB hub w/ power supply - a total of 4 items (counting the power supply for the USB hub) reduced down to one.
The little dock gives you two options. It can either utilize USB-C’s all four lanes to create enough bandwidth to drive a 4k 60Hz monitor with DP1.2, while provides USB and Ethernet connectivities through the remaining USB 2.0 bus. Or, it uses only two lanes to drive up to 2 FHD monitors and uses the other two for USB 3 connectivity and gigabit ethernet. For my setup, I use its USB 2.0 mode to connect a 4k monitor at 60Hz, a 1080p webcam, an usb speaker and wired ethernet. All equipment get enough bandwidth to work properly. I’m quite surprised to see over 150Mbps throughput from the Ethernet port as it’s only spec’ed at 100Mbps in USB2.0 mode! This had everything I had been looking for in a Type-C dock: DisplayPort alternate mode with the choice of USB 2.0+4k60 or USB 3.0+4k30; USB-C PD passthrough; detachable USB-C cable. Works with my X1 Carbon running Linux.
With my son distance learning, we bough him a laptop and hooked up an extra monitor I had, but when he needed to be somewhere other than my "home office" to use his laptop, unplugging the monitor, ethernet, external keyboard, etc. was such a pain. This dock fit the bill nicely by letting him just plug a usb-c cord into his laptop to get all the peripherals connected. Unfortunately the power requirements of the laptop do not allow him to use the dock for power also, but going from several cords to a power cord and usb is great.

Just like the other reviewer said, it works great except that with a 2016 Macbook Pro 15" you need to reboot in order for the HDMI monitor connection to work. Otherwise it shows as connected on the Macbook but the external monitor screen is black. After a reboot it works fine. Charging works fine. And yes the USB-C cable from the dock could be another 2-4 feet longer as you need to keep the dock fairly close to the Macbook.StarTech - is this a driver issue? Have you looked into it?
ethernet port disconnects sometimes, maybe once a month or more often. requires unit to be unplugged and plugged back in. of course if you have a bunch of USB devices also attached they also go offline. HMDI made lead to OS intermittent freezing - OS freezes for a few seconds, then works for a few second IF the HDMI monitor is turned off. turn monitor on, everything is normal again. enet requires driver install on 10.12+ overall doesn't seem totally stable when used 24/7. probably if you connect / disconnect it everyday, that gives it the resets it needs to be reliable. if your laptop stays put, this unit won't make you happy
