Multilayer fixed electrode MLER (Multi-Layer-Elect-Rords) established with SR-009 has evolved to MLER 2. The finish and etching process that smoothes the edge of the electrode opening reduces air resistance and further improves sound permeability. Also, the electrodes themselves are gold plated with high specific gravity to minimize the resonance of the ultra-thin electrode. At the same time, due to the effect of reducing the electric resistance of the electrode itself by gold plating, opened up a new ground for high speed, clarity, silky details, and powerful texture.

I've owned many headphones through the years, most of them at the high end. I've never heard anything that is as totally honest with the music as my SR-009s and I couldn't be more pleased. The sound accurately reproduces the music including tonality, speed, and the space as well as the full range of musical expression from highs to lows. This is a game changer. Thanks to HeadAmp for an excellent purchasing process and great follow up.

After 17 years of being in the headphones hobby, the Sr009S is the first headphone I feel comfortable touting the "best of the best". The standard SR009 is a fantastic headphone in its own right, but my issue was that they often felt a little too hot on the high end and a bit too thin on the low-end. If anything, they were more of an impressive novel headphone than they were the kind of thing that you'd want to turn the lights off and melt into for a few hours at the end of a long day. It was more of a let's put on a few tracks, be impressed, and then have to switch to something less fatiguing (i.e. the Sr-007).As much as I love collecting headphones, my real goal since beginning this hobby has been to find a singular headphone that impressed me in every regard. ... MoreAfter 17 years of being in the headphones hobby, the Sr009S is the first headphone I feel comfortable touting the "best of the best". It was more of a let's put on a few tracks, be impressed, and then have to switch to something less fatiguing (i.e. the Sr-007).As much as I love collecting headphones, my real goal since beginning this hobby has been to find a singular headphone that impressed me in every regard. I'm happy to say the S version of the Sr009, may very well be the end game. Not only is it a refinement of an almost analytically perfect headphone, but the tone has a magical sweetness only matched by a few legendary cans (He90, R10, Hp1000 ). In its own right, the SR009S is a masterpiece. Is it better than the other TOTL offerings? Only the outrageously priced $55,000 HE-1 system, in my opinion, is a better performer overall, and even then, not in the realm of a 43k+ price differential (assuming a SR009s/BHSE is in the ~12k range). Do not let the price fool you, the HE-1 and the Sr009s are neck-to-neck all-stars in the super tier world of headphone audio. You may find that a particular TOTL offering has some idealistic sound signature for one narrow band of reasons (e.g. the LCD-4 has a thicker sound and better bass extension; Utopia can give you more punch on EDM). Yet, the SR009S performs exceptionally well, with no genuine flaws, in addition to providing the highest degrees of transparency, detail, speed, in a way unmatched by any other. For those that are interested, I am pairing my SR009s with a maxed out KGST, a "miniature BHSE", also designed by Kevin Gilmore. I look forward to eventually owning a Headamp's BHSE, which I'm sure will drive them even closer to the edge.
My wife and I were making the transition to headphone listening from decades of floor-standing speaker listening. Choice of headphones was critical for our future listening enjoyment. As principally classical and acoustic music listeners, the Stax 009S coupled with the Blue Hawaii Special Edition amplifier just punched ALL of our audiophile buttons. We compared to the Stax 007 and my wife was a "thumbs up", but then she put on the 009S for audition and single thumbs up immediately turned into smiles, head-knods and vigorous double-thumbs-up. Let's just say that for our priorities of transparency, detail resolution, neutrality and accurate reproduction of the natural timbre of the instruments, the Stax 009S was an immediate hit with us and continues to thoroughly ... MoreMy wife and I were making the transition to headphone listening from decades of floor-standing speaker listening. SR-009S Phones Top of List for Electrostatic!!!!! Wonderful..... I have owned Stax 07(still own) Hifiman Shangri-La Jr OverEar Electrostatic $4000 and Stax SR- 009SThe World of Electrostatic Headphones: I have had the pleasure to have owed Abyss and other headphones but with the right equipment for Electrostatic Headphones, and the money, the SR-009s leave you feeling you don't have search for something better. Very efficient(use less gain to get same db output),more than the Stax 007 and HIfiman Shangri-La, very comfortable for long listening...The resonance, bass, mids, highs are all great!!!! Super Clean, that's why I like Electrostatic over regular headphones.I would much prefer a Electrostatic system with these phones over the Abyss with high end associated DAC/preamp/computer/turntable etc......So you ask WHY? Electrostatic is a different sound, cleaner in a different way but that's for the listener to decide, and the associated equipment they have. For instance if you a system for speakers Electrostatic is a problem. For a isolated headphone system Blue Hawaii and Stax SR-009s is a very strong sound.I have compared with Shangri-La Jr amp system w/Shangri-La and Stax 009S The Stax is not only a little better, not as thin sounding, probably can compete with any any Electrostatic Headphone around the $4500 range Highly recommended for headphone setup!!!
Be prepared for an unparalleled experience. Give them time to break in and come to life. You will not return to dynamic headphones. Non fatiguing extreme detail, fastest attack and decay, and yet musical and not just purely analytical, in particular driven by BHSE.
I just received my Stax SR-009S headphones and am elated with the sound quality. I started with 'NO' equalization and have not altered from that configuration. This is the first headphone I have ever used that didn't require some sort of equalization. I am using a very old Stax SRM-1/MKII that I purchased new eons ago and it drives the 009S with ease. An absolutely fabulous purchase. I hounded Justin with numerous phone calls and lots of boring questions but he didn't mind. A very happy experience.Next is the amplifier purchase.....
I have these partnered with their older brother the SR-009 and find the SR-009S to be a worthy update, providing a very enjoyable and detailed musical presentation. Works well across musical genres in a correct system. Very pleased with the sound. Comfortable wear. Stunning detail and perhaps a little more approachable than the SR-009 for long listening sessions. The SR-009S have some magic in them, pleased with the purchase.
I had zero interest in headphones pre-COVID--I was certain they could not match my McIntosh/B&W set-up for overall enjoyment. And what kind of dope drops $8K or so on headphones when he has awesome speakers already? But with others always home and looking for quiet during social distancing, I had to try something...These babies are just sublime, and I enjoy them every bit as much as my speakers. They convey intimacy, detail, musicality, and soundstage. I love them. I'm using them with a SRM-700T, and my McIntosh C22 is between my DAC and driver. In my pre-purchase tests, the Stax outperformed Raal Requisites (too hot, like your ear is next to the drum set or sax) and Focal Utopias (too cold).BUY THEM!
