We bought this machine back in January 2018 and I've left it till now to write a review so I had almost 12 months of experience. The machine is very easy to use, is very reliable, and makes excellent coffee with a lovely frothed milk. We replaced our pod machine with the Sunbeam so we could be a little more environmentally friendly and now throw our coffee grounds in the garden. This machine is as easy as a pod machine to use, with better coffee in my opinion. A simple but elegant, classic design in stainless steel makes the Sunbeam look perfectly at home on the kitchen bench, and is a welcoming sight in the morning when the simplicity of operation won't defeat you when you are still half asleep! The only issue has been the steam jet blocking up with dried milk at one point, however this is to be expected if you don't wipe it down properly after frothing your milk! It's no problem though as the machine is provided with a handy little device with a wire spike to clear the nozzle, a minute later and you are back in action. A fantastic machine for the simple coffee connoisseur!

Forever Faithful

After using the regular Sunbeam Cafe Espresso machine for a few years we decided to upgrade to the Mini Barista which is great for a number of reasons. First you can select one or two cups (fill volume) and walk away whilst your cup is being filled without the need to manually turn the dial of machine. We have glass Bodum coffee cups and 2 x 2 cup selection fills them perfectly. I can walk away from the machine as it fills knowing it will auto stop. The steam wand and jug is great to warm / froth milk for multiple cups at a time. Fill each cup with espresso, put aside and then steam your milk to pour on each. You don't need to worry about cleaning milk containers, or hoses as a simple wipe over the wand and a shot of steam cleans. You don't need to worry about cleaning milk containers, or hoses as a simple wipe over the wand and a shot of steam cleans. Many machines seem too fiddly to clean using multiple parts for milk, and can only do one or two cups at a time before they need to come up to temp. The 15 bar pump pressure is great and extracts well, producing a coffee equivalent to many cafe's depending on the quality of coffee chosen and grind (which should always be considered no matter the machine). You can use small espresso cups or larger mugs by removing the bottom plate, and can produce one or two cups of espresso at a single time placing a cup under each side of spout. The machine has an auto switch off function if left on, so is good to know if you forget to turn the whole machine off manually. This unit is so simple to use, and for the price compares or betters other brands on the market for the same price point or more. As mentioned we have been using Sunbeam machines for the last 6 or 7 years with the Mini Barista the last 2 and don't wont to change. We seem to purchase a new machine every 2-3 years as the price is good and makes us happy knowing we have a well maintained machine. Ofcourse I'm sure you could use your Sunbeam for many years more (like our first unit) if descaled regularly. The purchase of this machine was to replace the unit we had for 2+ years. Yes, you could purchase the Em5300 (the larger unit with grind and IQ temp function) but you can save yourself a few hundred dollars with the Mini barista if seeking a simple reliable machine. One point to note re the Mini is the group handle / cup head at first seems always to be very tight. It takes a fair amount of strength to turn the handle into the machine for the first few weeks of use. We thoroughly recommend this machine. Bought online at Target as was cheaper than elsewhere, with click and collect delivery. It was available in store to collect within 3 business days of placing order, which is great for a rural area.

Good crème poor quality group head unit
7 December 2022

After much deliberation for months following the expiry of my trusty 12 year old Saeco, I plumped for this unit: it provides a level of automation required for a household with a toddler, but still allows for a bit of user tweaking, particularly the frother, which is why I don’t want a more automated and or expensive variant. The big disappointment is the group-head has two significant manufacturing chips/defects, straight out the box before my first usage. I’m really not wanting to box everything for such a smaller production fault. Likewise, I concerned that the flaking silver covering is a health hazard.

Great little machine, just time consuming to use
30 March 2018

I am a barista in a high volume cafe and I recently decided to go for it and buy a small machine for at home so I can cater for friends and family and myself on days off. Also now coming up to winter, very early mornings. I wanted to get something not as technical as the machines I work on since there’s no pressure to have everything perfect, so I did my research and found this little baby. It is so straight forward. You get a choice of extracting two cups or one cup at any time with easily removable baskets in your group handles. And if you only ever use the two shot, you can store the other basket in the machine itself. The steam wand has decent pressure and makes excellent textured milk, so long as you have the perfect angle. You get a choice of extracting two cups or one cup at any time with easily removable baskets in your group handles. And if you only ever use the two shot, you can store the other basket in the machine itself. The steam wand has decent pressure and makes excellent textured milk, so long as you have the perfect angle. It is great that you have a hot water setting too, I prefer to just grab my hot water out of the sink however as it’s quicker and a little less messy. The cup warmer is on the top and doesn’t work as fast as I would like but if you leave it on for a while, it goes okay. I haven’t reached a cleaning cycle yet as they only happen every 6 months to a year. Not sure, but so long as you maintain the machine, as in water washing the group head after using and thoroughly cleaning the steam wand, it will stay clean. The machine comes with a plastic tamper, which does the job, I just prefer something heavier. The coffee extraction itself I am still working on. I decided to go with pregrounded coffee beans for convenience and because I couldn’t decide on a grinder. I currently use Harris preground #3. Now the crema is not perfect, and the extraction isn’t perfect. But I liked the flavor of this coffee from the get go so I have not yet tried any others. The crema is still there to do art but it is just a little bit bubbly/foamy. Another thing is that I cannot extract coffee and use the steam wand at the same time but I cuppose I should have realised that when I bought the machine, looking at the structure and how it works. But I’ve learned to cope and be patient, it just takes a lot longer to make a single cup or even two cups of coffee than it would in a cafe. I am enjoying this machine and it was great for the price! But if you’re looking for something with more speed and less hassle than it might be a smart decision to go for a pod machine. But if you’re adamant in extracting real coffee than I would recommend this one. Just be prepared to be patient.

Mini Barista very dissapointing

Have been disappointed with the mini barista.I loved my previous 2 Sunbeam machines especially the milk wands. Used so much they got worn out. This mini barista is so much noisier than the previous 2 models. The depth of the top dispensing unit has been manufactured shorter in depth and consequently everything inside it vibrates more when I froth the milk or extract coffee.Deafening when you are half asleep making your morning coffee. I couldn't seem to get the coffee to come out hot enough so took to reheating cups first with boiling water and making the milk extra hot. The previous model they made was perfect but no longer manufactured as replaced by this machine - shame. I only had a just over a year and the milk wand stopped working. Why do companies 'fix' things when they are not 'broken'. this experience has made me cautious buying another Sunbeam.

Not a good machine a second time round
16 August 2022

I have been using this machine for 2 years now, but have had to get it replaced after 1 year. The machine leaked underneath the drip tray, and that was initially why I replaced it. Since replacing it... the same issue has occured. I believe this is now the machine and not a one off situation. I will not be recommending this to anyone and will be looking for another machine.Once the milk is steamed and added to the coffee... I cannot taste the coffee, and so can't my family. The only good side to this machine is that it works fine for iced drinks. This is not worth keeping for only a few months OF THE YEAR when it's too hot to drink hot drinks.

Not in it for the long run

I bought this machine about 1 year and 2 months ago and for the last 5 months I’ve been experiencing some really weird issues. The steam wand will occasionally not work. Making me having to turn off and on the machine to kick start it. But the worst thing about the machine is that I leaks internally and externally. I was smelling a burning sound from inside the machine so I was forced to open it up. To find almost every metal part to be rusted while also there being water everywhere. Water also for the last 4 months has be leaking through the side of the group head. Even when the machine is off. Ive used this machine everyday. I recommend going for a more expensive model. As I assume they would be made to a better quality. However I have never experienced a better model so do your own research.
