Surly Front Rack - Black

The Surly Front Rack 2.0 is a strong and reliable front rack made of cro-moly. It's height-adjustable in a lowrider/highrider design, providing a more stable ride with lowrider mounted panniers. However, these can be a burden on rocky or rutted roads and trails, where the upper rails on the rack provide an alternate pannier mounting position. The rack platform above the wheel increases your cargo capacity further, ideal for carrying a tent and other gear. It mounts directly to forks equipped with a mid-blade eyelet, located approximately 165mm from the dropout eyelet. Additional hardware is included to securely mount the rack on forks without a mid-blade eyelet. The rack is suitable for most rigid 26" and 700c forks equipped with drum, caliper, or cantilever brakes.

Changed my front low riders(they were moving all the time) with this. It's the best improvement I've made. I was even able to carry my partner's panniers stacked up on the front when her front racks broke 50km before the end of our trip.

All fittings are provided to fit to your bike. It looks good, and indestructible. Super handy with petit porteur (bag from same brand).

Great Heavy Duty Rack

This rack is super heavy duty and durable. Installation is a little tricky if you are a perfectionist and want everything perfectly semetrical, but once installed, it is easy to remove and put back on without losing your alignments. The rack is pretty heavy, so if that is an issue, it's not for you. However, if you are looking to load it up, then it's perfect. It works great on my Surly Cross Check!

Great front rack
23 June 2015

this is the only rack in the market that does what it does so well. There are some similar velo orange racks but they cost around $250. This rack mounts front panniers high or low, as well as a top-mount porteur style bag. You could add a wider platform to the top to carry a lot of different items. It is super strong and easy to installPROS: Easy to Use, Versatile, Durable

Great quality
26 October 2021

This is a sturdy good quality frame. Easy to put together, mostly! I was so excited to get it. Only problem is my disc brake sticks out exactly where the bottom frame bar of the rack needs to sit in order to reach the eyelet so I had to return it. I actually looked at buying a new bike so I could keep the rack, but realized that wasn’t feasible haha.If I ever do get a new bike-this will be the front rack I buy!!!

Nearly perfect

This is a well made rack designed to work with a variety of wheel and bicycle sizes. Assembly and mounting is straightforward. It's steel, it's sturdy, it allows panniers to be mounted high or low, and it has enough nuts and bolts to inspire confidence. If your fork has mid-blade eyelets, you probably won't find anything to complain about. However, my fork doesn't have those eyelets. Surly used to include the hardware (hose clamps and a stamped piece of metal with bolt holes) necessary to make it work, but in this version of the rack they decided not to. This leaves you to come up with your own solution (p-clips) or buy a separate $9 adapter kit. If it weren't for Surly cheaping out on hardware this would be a 5 star product.PROS: Easy to Use, Versatile, ... MoreThis is a well made rack designed to work with a variety of wheel and bicycle sizes. Sturdy and HEAVY!
26 February 2018

This thing is sturdy as heck! Only complaint might be that it’s so heavy, but that comes with the strength and durability of cro-moly, so it’s a good trade off.Note: the silver one appeared to be shiny chrome in the photo, but is actually more of a semi gloss finish (kind of like the paint on a silver car.) Can’t tell if it’s painted or if I’m looking at the metal itself, but either way, it seems to be a pretty durable finish. Just know that it won’t match your silver aluminum bottle cages.

The rack securely holds my Arkel gt-18 panniers and allows quick and easy access to the contents. The rack performs flawlessly on the paved road and works just as well on fireroads and single track.I do wish the rack had a horizontal braze on so I could mount my dynamo powered headlamp.Otherwise the rack is near perfect and will serve its owner for many years to come.PROS: Panniers Easily Attach, Stainless Hardware, Matte Black Finish, Hook 'stoppers' On Bottom, Four Mounts Included, Mount High Or LowCONS: No Horizontal Braze-on, Lacks Addt'l Hardware, Stainless Bolts SnappedBEST USES: Front Panniers, Bicycle Camping, Touring, Carrying Even More Stuff

Tough, strong and built to last

Tough, strong and built to last. This rack fit my Ortlib Panniers no problem on my Surly Cross Check. I've used this rack off road fully loaded with no problems. Mounting hardware was easy to use and adjust. You do have to tilt the rack forward if you use a tray style hitch mount bike rack. That was was just a matter of removing two screws and tilting it forward so the clamp arm on the rack can clamp down on the tire.

Well-built, solid rack
5 February 2018

Bought rack for a Surly Straggler with panniers and occasional top loads. Never had any issues and was easy to install at home.Rack fit fine with maximum width tires for the Straggler but thought it could use 1cm more height.Ultimately thought the rack was overkill for commuting+weekendering. It's not as much of an issue with 10+ pounds strapped to the bike but when riding unloaded the weight of the rack on the fork can be felt.
