Delighted with results, can see our hedgehog at work!

Very pleased with this purchase, took a couple of attempts to get configuration that works for us. We were wanting to see if hedgehogs were in the garden overnight, best set up was on a mini tripod on the ground about 3M away from the feeding bowl using the 19led setting and with all the other patio lighting switched off. For such a small animal I set the pir sensitivity to high, resolution to max and bingo, by the morning we had 1100 still photos! The time and date tracking is great as you can see the time spent feeding on each visit and who else appeared which included cats and birds who arrived at dawn as the camera changed to the colour daylight mode. I am going to get a 12v DC power supply as we are using it near the house and will run an extended low voltage lead out to run it, It seems to be a 4mm od and 1.7mm centre pin connector (positive on the pin) which is required.

I bought one which worked really well but failed after a couple of weeks. First the night vision failed and then all recording failed. Seeing as it did work well initially I thought it just a singular problem. We needed a product and Bunnings had more. We purchased another two but they both failed in a very similar manner. We are left with two cameras working intermittently in daylight only and one that does not work at all. Such a disappointment. So I am researching another product and I strongly suggest to anyone wanting to buy such a device to look past this brand and model.

Despite the high quality appearance of manufacture and construction, the OutbackCam OBC140 failed within five minutes of installing the batteries. I did not even make it through the basic setup process. I am working with Swann via their support team for a replacement. The Swann team have been helpful however the circumstances are very disappointing. I hope I can write a better review once I have a unit that works.

Great Cam pity about battery life
14 June 2017

Further to the previous reviewer's grizzle the 19/21 switch determines the strength of the infrared illumination, 19 or 40 leds. It is a great camera but VERY heavy on battery life. A full set of AAs lasted about one day with the camera triggering continuously on waving branches (filled a 32Gb card before dying). Fine if your wildlife aren't outdoors. JayCar sells the plug to use an external power supply. I'd suggest using that for total coverage of more that 36 hours. The black plastic bits look like they'll get brittle with extended outdoor exposure. In sunlight the menu options can be hard to read. Response from Swann: Thanks for your review, you can add another set of batteries to extend the recording time (you may have already tried it). Takes Experience to Get Good Results
15 July 2021

I bought this to monitor the Goodnature rat trap failings, and it's very useful. I check it daily and tweak the installation to get the results I want. Trap to camera distance is 1.8m and the LEDs are a bit too bright for the subject. I'll experiment with neutral density filter, but of course it may be transparent to IR light. Perhaps Swann could find a way to reduce light output further. Another modification I'd recommend is to move the power connector away from the tripod support screw. I use a car starter battery pack which will power the camera for months, but I had to modify the stand to use them together. Other than that it's great.

Terrible product
2 January 2022

I bought this and returned it the same day. Things that were wrong: 1) It would not read any of my SD cards. My PCs and Macs could read them fine. Even after allowing it to format the SD card it still couldn't read it. Things I didn't like: 1) The interface is awful. It was like a 1990s retic control ugh.... 2) The buttons sometimes took two or three presses to make them work 3) Just trying to set it up used 50% of the 4 AA batteries in the main body.

Useless at night
29 August 2020

Have been using this for about a week. The pictures in daytime are good, but at night the pictures are mainly obliterated by a large white area. I have attached one of the better ones despite setting it to only use 19 LEDs. Am now investigating physically blocking some of the LEDs. It is also a bit cumbersome to use. Have logged a support call but the automatic response said it would take two weeks and suggested using the Live Chat. Live Chat did not respond in an hour yesterday and I have been waiting an hour again today.

Very Good - but...
9 January 2017

This is a good solid piece of kit. It is only let down by the quality of the user manual. For example there are two switches on the device which are not described in any detail. They are the 19/40 switch and the GPS switch. The manual tells you no more than that the GPS is not available on this model (why have a switch?) and the 19/40 switch is called the 19/40 switch (very revealing). As to the device itself, it could be improved with an external on/off switch as quite often that's all you want to get at and taking the back off to do just this is annoying. The quality of pictures is very good. The battery life seems ok, although the first set i put in it died in about 10 mins. They may have been stale (although well within their best by date). I note there is a 12v socket in the base (which gets in the way of a tripod mounting) and I assume Swann have a dedicated adapter for this (not supplied and not advertised). So all in all a good piece of kit which I would recommend (perhaps a bit pricey).

Works okay, until it didn't
22 July 2022

The camera, at first, works decent. It is easy to use, convenient and cheap despite bathing the image with too much light a lot of the time, ruining the image entirely. However, after a month of use it stopped turning on and the switch snapped off. Admittedly, the camera was left out in wet, muddy, cold conditions but these cameras should be able to handle that. Best to get another camera unless you want one that won't be out in severe conditions and that doesn't produce a clear image half the time.
