I have been using a Synology DS415+ with 4 x 4TB enterprise level HDDs for nearly 8 years. I recently had one drive fail, but was able to replace and rebuild it without issue. This event served as a reminder that it was about time to replace and upgrade this server. I chose the DS1520+ and have installed 5 x 8TB WDC Gold HDDs in it. Setup went well with no issues. I am currently copying over 10 years' worth of photographic images and catalogs from the old to the new server - which is the tedious part. Synology equipment has performed well for me and I am pleased with this upgrade choice thus far.

Like, imagine probably every router you've ever bought. Or Windows. You know, buggy garbage that doesn't work like it's supposed to and constantly gets in your way. But this software is REALLY GOOD. The little app center is great, the wizards guide you through setting up a useful, flexible, secure, up-to-date little NAS. I've built most of this stuff manually in the past with mdadm+lvm, etc., so I can mostly tell what it's doing behind the scenes. I just really appreciate the common sense defaults, the well-placed explanations, even the ramp of tooltips and suggestions is obviously considered and tuned. These people are working really hard on the software, and it shows. To me, the quality of life while managing this thing is even more important than the data reliability (3 disk SHR, though, so I also expect good reliability). I really wanted something that was not unpleasant to use, and I was surprised by Synology's software, which is an absolute joy. Really. I can't say enough good things about the software. Thank you! I am very impressed with the capabilities and capacity, especially for the cost. $699 for something with out HDD or SDD storage may seem like a bunch for a NAS but remember this can do soooo much more. VPN for remote connection or linking between remote sites, Surveillance application, LDAP service, Backup Location for desktops and/or cloud based services, Backup of NAS data to cloud services, and so much more. Upgraded from an old Synology DS209 unit which was still functioning, just running out of disk space. I initially intended to purchase the 4 bay 920+ unit, but decided to opt for the 1520+ 5 bay unit. Only populated it with 4 drives for the time being. The 1520+ obviously is a little more expensive than the 920+, but the extra RAM and the ability to add the additional drive I think is worth it in the long run.So far I have been very impressed with the DSM7 operating system, well organized and easy to understand with good help files available.Extremely pleased with my purchase.I ordered the unit late in the evening and to my surprise I received an email later that night from B&H stating it had already been shipped, amazing service.

You get 5 mechanical drive bays, plus 4 SSD bays (2 of which are U.2 NVMe PCIe compatible).
I use the 1520+ for media storage including photo and video backups, Mac and Windows backups including for Time Machine and a windows based separate solution. I also use the synology backup solution for a Linux server. I'm running several docker containers and have had nothing but excellent results. I bought it in a bundle with 14TB drives and despite some concerns about possible drive compatibility there has been no I'll effects. I added NVMe cache storage but for my use cases that doesn't really do much for me. I've been impressed with the versatility over all and the power to run docker containers is pretty impressive. It works very, very well.

I am breaking this out into multiple purpose built shared folders and so far am only using btrfs. I have Plex running using the official Plex build for synology intel 64 bit. I also have some backup shares for local machines, one of which is backing time machine on a MacBook Pro.I am super happy with the general function of the device. It seems quick and responsive, and the ability to run packages greatly increases how awesome things are. I imagined needing to configure LACP to aggregate multiple connections to my network for capacity and speed, and I plan on it, but it is very fast even with a single uplink.
