I had considered the 8 bay DS1819+ and then saw that the DS1821+ would probably be what I want but a bit pricier and not shipping yet. Then I saw the DS1621+ and 14TB drives on sale and determined this product will hit all my needs for the next five years. I've been running it for about a week after a week of drive testing and configuring. Setup was straightforward--the DSM 6.2 is what is current, and runs on the DS1515+. I used the Synology "Migration Assistant" package to move all the files over in about 30 hours, with only a couple of small windows of a few minutes where the services were disabled. I used the Synology "Migration Assistant" package to move all the files over in about 30 hours, with only a couple of small windows of a few minutes where the services were disabled. I didn't even know about this program, but it worked really well. I had been using Hyper Backup and was going to use that to restore. Speaking of backups, I moved an external USB drive that stores Hyper Backups to the new NAS; it picked up incrementals right where the old one left off. And one volume holds macOS Time Machine images for three computers and the Macs all started backing up to the new NAS where they left off. The 10GbE ethernet is a massive upgrade for a modest cost (E10G18-T1). I'm getting 650-700 MB/s read and write sustained from six 7200 RPM Seagate Exos 14TB X14 drives (AFS/SMB, Btrfs, disabled Data Integrity Protection, 4K sectors) and slightly less with Integrity turned on. The NAS 10GbE interface connects through Cat7 w/o switch directly to an iMac Pro and another cable connects the 1GbE interface to the main LAN switch. My experience with the older Synology DS1515+ was pretty good so now I'm a repeat buyer. I had a power supply issue but was able to get a replacement under warranty immediately. Software upgrades always worked. I had to replace several 7200 RPM drives with 5400s and the RAID-6 rebuilds never left me without service. SMB was slower than AFP on the 1515+ but almost at parity on the 1621+. I considered getting an expansion unit but wanted higher bandwidth so I decided it would be better to go for 10GbE instead of attempting to do 4x 1GbE link aggregation and buy a new NAS. Mostly I am using the NAS for large video files and some backups and the high speed is going to change my workflow, holding the big files and editing directly off the NAS. But the DSM software also provides a ton of other goodies: small server capabilities like DNS, email, Synology apps, surveillance recording. Small things like UPS auto-shutdown support was nice too. I haven't measured/compared things like IOPS performance, but will probably spend a bit more time considering encryption, adding RAM, and adding NVMe for a speed boost.

For easy redundant backups.

Nice NAS
30 June 2021

I have been using Synology NAS's for many years and have never had one fail. I only upgrade them when my expanding needs make the old ones too gronky. I'm worried about their recent moves to lock their hardware to their own accessories. See notes on DRAM, above. More concerning was that I got some 18 TB WD Red Pro and 10 TB WD Purple drives. These are both mainstream NAS drives and have been around for a while. Neither are officially supported by Synology. That's just not acceptable. By the way, these drives work perfectly when installed in the DS1621+. (This being slow to certify new drives may possibly have something to do with the fact that they have recently launched their own brand of hard drives.)

Stable and reliable but slow and overpriced

Pros:- Stable and reliable. You can leave this device running 24/7 for months and it's very unlikely to fail.- Easy to use. The web GUI is simple and intuitive and quick to learn. I particularly like the file browser app, the best I've seen in a web browser.- Secure. Synology does a good job of keeping their products up to date and secure. You can further secure this device with 2FA (two factor authentication).Cons:- Underpowered hardware. The CPU is about on par with Intel CPUs from 10 years ago.- 4GB RAM only. You'll have to pay extra to upgrade.- Gigabit Ethernet ports only. You'll have to pay extra to upgrade.- Cheap plastic HDD trays with fragile moving parts that will break easily if mishandled.- Turning on compression greatly reduces ... MorePros:- Stable and reliable. How convenient. In summary, it's a good and reliable NAS, but the hardware is very underwhelming for the price.

Works as expected
31 May 2022

There's a bit of a learning curve for a home user without extensive network experience. Synology offers countless apps and options for how to set up and store data on the NAS. Admittedly, Synology mobile apps don't have the most confidence-inspiring ratings on the Apple App Store (and I've had a lukewarm experience with one of them myself), but the desktop interface is intuitive and works exactly as expected so far. a month later, I'm still figuring out the exact settings and ways that I want to back up my data (two Macs, one PC, two iPhones, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. doing auto vs. manual backups vs. syncing, etc.), but that's on me - not Synology or B&H. Having so many options is nice to be able to set everything to my specific needs, even if it does ... MoreThere's a bit of a learning curve for a home user without extensive network experience. I'm happy to report that I rarely notice it.

unit is great but arrived without disk trays
29 December 2022

About a month ago I purchased this unit new to benefit of the black friday deal they had. When it arrived - the disk trays were missing, but I assumed those were a separate purchase.I wasn't aware it was supposed to come with the 6 disk trays - and only discovered this about a month later.i could of course return the unit and ask for a replacement or refund as it's still within the return period, but reading through the fine print of the bh return policy it looks like customer has to pay for shipping, which would make it tough as shipping a heavy unit is not cheap. So I am stuck in this tricky situation.Great product - but really inconvenient to be missing the disk trays as it looks unattractive and makes it scary to move without first powering off the unit.
