Absolutely fantastic lens. On my Nikon D500 it becomes a 150-600mm zoom. Image quality is very good, image stabilization is fantastic (handheld shots at full zoom with 1/250 of a second). Also sharp at the long end and the size and weight is nice. All this for under $800. I am extremely happy with this lens, and with Adorama for shipping it so fast and at a great price.

This lens is marvelous on the D500 and D7500, with sharp and fast AF, on the D850 it loses its edge, but is still very good. On the Z9 it does a good job but not as fast as the Z 100-400 from Nikon (4 times the price), although the image is close. I have taken some of my best bird action shots with this lens due to its small size and lightweight, it makes it easy to track fast! I have the G2 150-600, Nikon 500 PF, Nikon 600 F4, and this $700 DLLs lens is always in my bag, it is worthy of action everywhere. One of the true gems for an open-minded photographer.

After exhaustive research I am so happy with my final purchase of the Tamron. I purchased it to go on Safari in South Africa and used it extensively there for two weeks. I also took several thousand photos before that at the Air Show and several other venues. The lens preformed flawlessly in every aspect, sharpness, clarity, color rendition and focusing. I was able to acquire and get the shot without the lens hunting for focus. The build quality on the lens is quite good with some weather sealing. As always with Lensrentals, the ordering, shipping, and delivery of the product were great (albeit with a slight glitch at the shipping end); the lens itself was a problem. I rented it to use on a Nikon D500 for an airshow I was attending. The VC (Vibration Control) was abysmal--hardly any of the photos I took of propeller planes at 1/400 of a second came out (1/400 of second, or lower, is necessary to get the 'propeller blur'). I ended up taking jet shots at 1/3200 or 1/4000 with the VC 'Off' to get acceptable photos--but then, at that shutter speed the lens was wide-open and some of the images are soft. Not a good experience with that lens, unfortunately.

I got many more excellent keepers with the Sigma, noticeably fewer with the Tamron, really no bad ones with Sigma, many bad and unusable ones with the Tamron. To give credit where its due, the Tamron did really well with stationary subjects, and it seemed sharp throughout the range and didnt appear to need adjusting with the dock. I really wanted to like this lens, but despite getting many excellent stationary subject images that I really liked a lot, there were just too many bad ones, most particularly with moving subjects and flying birds.So disappointingly, this lens didnt work for me and I returned it. It was hard to decide whether to give the lens 3 or 4 stars. When its good, its good, so tha deserves at least 4 stars. But when its bad, its out of focus too much and I dont think it performed acceptably in that regard, so thats 2 or 3 stars. Because I had the Sigma on hand to compare results in identical shooting scenarios, the differences between the two became quickly apparent, and overall, the Sigma outperformed the Tamron in all the ways that count for me.Note: The Tamron does have an optional tripod collar, but I would never have bought it for this lens...not needed as it is easily hand held and I think the collar would be in the way.
Overall good service and fast shipping. The one thing I would recommend is that LensRentals maybe consider just including the tripod collars for lenses that have them (as part of the rental, even if it means charging another 2-3 dollars per day for the rental). I know that this is usually done for lenses that are normally sold with collars out of the box, but for example with the Tamron 100-400 lens, it would be nice to just include it, rather than just make it an extra item to rent (Even though the collar itself is an accessory from Tamron and is not included with the lens when you buy one).
The Tamron 100-400mm performs above it's price point. It is light for it's reach and reasonably sharp. The only place I had any issues (and I have rented this lens multiple times) is that the AF can be a little slow and sometimes lose track especially with a small moving subject (bird) in low light. But if you know the lens and work within it's abilities, you can produce some great shots.

At the 100mm zoom level this lens is small enough to hang off the camera's lens mount but it's long enough at the 400mm zoom I'd be hesitant to put that much leverage on the camera's lens mount and of course it balances better on a tripod head when mounted on the lens foot instead of the camera.All in all I'm very happy with this lens and think it's a tremendous value and a bit of a sleeper lens at this price point. It's a huge step up from the 70-300mm Nikon lens I carried around for similar uses both in terms of AF speed, image sharpness and of course the extra 100mm of focal length which is huge.

I went to where the Sandhill Cranes are wintering over here in south central New Mexico and clicked off 300-400 of these beautiful birds in good range. My day went real sour when I found that roughly 85% of my RAW files where un-sharp...I was shooting at F/8, 1/3000th. Thats right, and getting soft ... And the fact that this lens fills a FF sensor (as does the Sigma) is utter sweetness. At just over two pounds I can walk the canyons with a very capable tele in my days kit, and sacrifice concerning imaging capability.

I can't see the images very well in the viewfinder (old eyes) and am using live view more frequently. The lens overexposes compared to my other lenses and I am shooting minus one f stop. These are easy workarounds.I am particularly pleased that the lens is such a bargain that there was enough money left in the budget for a tripod, point and shoot camera, backpack camera bag, lens support foot, remote release and other accessories with money left over.
