A good lens with some flaws

I purchased this lens because I'm a bit lazy and like the idea of going out and getting some decent landscape shots as well as zooming in for wildlife shots without having to change lenses. The 50 to 400mm range does a decent job of that.A few things I am not so fond of would include the need to use the lock button just to keep the lens from extending while you are walking and the vignetting that is very noticeable especially when capturing the sky in the corners of your image. I know this can be corrected in post and if Adobe gets around to adding this lens profile, it may be taken care of with the click of a button, but for now, it is a nuisance that I find disappointing. For this reason alone, I would probably return the lens except that I haven't found one ... MoreI purchased this lens because I'm a bit lazy and like the idea of going out and getting some decent landscape shots as well as zooming in for wildlife shots without having to change lenses. An included lens collar would have given this a 5 star because really you can't use the tele end without one. I don't need 400 mm often but this will fit the bill when I choose to. I've used it a few times and am really happy with the quality. I have a Sony and it still picks up eye focus! I like the smaller size and weight compared to the Sony 100-400. But the price sold me and having the 50-100 extra reach is a bonus

Awesome lens!

Excellent Image Quality
2 May 2023

The image quality from the lens at all focal lengths is amazing, considering the price! I'm getting very sharp image, especially for close-up shots on my Sony a7C. It really is the best option for a normal to super tele lens in terms of quality to price ratio. HOWEVER, the color balance leaves a LOT to be desired. I'm correcting for a quite significant green cast in all images in Lightroom. I'd suggest bringing a gray-scale card with you at all times.

Great for kids sports
22 December 2022

Lens physically looks amazing. I'm still working on best camera settings to produce the best possible images and videos. I'm very much a novice and don't fully understand all the photo lingo and settings. Bought for kids sports games. A little darker image than my old lens. Will need to learn the settings or shoot in better lighting.

Honestly, a great lens
8 February 2023

This is overall, a great lens. Clearly a zoom is a compromise, but this is a great compromise. For mountain landscapes, I find the 50-400 range to be extremely useful. Wide angle just makes everything looks small and distant, and anything longer than 400mm is huge and heavy. Although this does weigh about 1.1 kg, that's actually very light for 400mm. It's not as sharp as a Sony 135mm GM, but nothing is. The price point is very reasonable, and I can without hesitation recommend this lens to photographers of all levels. Many of my portfolio shots are taken with this lens. Check the samples out here: https://www.pexels.com/@hugosykes/

Total joke, won't fit onto Sony A7iii
1 May 2023

If Tamron are producing such a high quality precision product, how come they can't make a product whose lens mount meets the tolerances required to fit the Sony body for which it is intended? Slots into body but despite using some quite extreme force will not rotate onto camera body. I gave up before I damaged my camera. It is interesting that there is almost no stock of this product currently in the UK (May 2023). I wonder if this high quality lens manufacturer isn't having a supply chain issue but an issue that they fluffed it, and released lenses that simply don't fit. Maybe with your camera you will be lucky? Maybe you're prepared to twist it so hard that it breaks the lens mount off your camera trying, or ends up welded onto your camera for life? Wonderful Lens
6 January 2023

I had a too-large collection of lenses including the Sony 70-300 and got this lens to replace that as well as several primes. On the plus side: especially after the firmware upgrade the focus is quick and spot on. The lens gives me tack sharp images through the entire focal length, although there is some vignetting which I should be taken care of by lens profiles once my lens/camera combo is available in DXO which should be any day now. With my 16-35, 24-105 and this 50-400, I'm pretty much covered for everything with just the three lenses.

Works Fantastic with FX6 for Video, exceptional work Tamron!
22 December 2022

Once used it on two shoots (nationally airing) so far, and it's a life-changer.Auto focus is very very accurate, and it seems to work very well with wide AF area, which can often confuse tele lenses (Sigma 150-600emount needed tap or zone, as it'd always pick the wrong thing to lock onto)Been using it on a second camera for interviews, and it feels like a bit of a joke being able to shoot at ~50mm for lots of it, but snap in to 400mm and isolate a mouth or eyes from 8' away. It's nuts to be able to do that with one lens.Haven't tested it's max focus speed yet, but so far it's been on 3-5/7 on the focus speed setting with FX6, and has 100% kept up.Macro aspect is a total bonus, didn't expect to benefit from that as much as I did. Totally adds to the one lens ... MoreOnce used it on two shoots (nationally airing) so far, and it's a life-changer.Auto focus is very very accurate, and it seems to work very well with wide AF area, which can often confuse tele lenses (Sigma 150-600emount needed tap or zone, as it'd always pick the wrong thing to lock onto)Been using it on a second camera for interviews, and it feels like a bit of a joke being able to shoot at ~50mm for lots of it, but snap in to 400mm and isolate a mouth or eyes from 8' away. Totally adds to the one lens shot options with this, makes run-and-gun doc shoots 2x as fast as having to lens swap to a macro, let alone a 400mm macro.Optical stabilizer works amazing for hand-held, but I'm exceptionally good at it, so might not save everyone, but I was able to nail 400mm shots real-time during a scene at a barber shop without the space or time to shoot on sticks. It's way way better than on the Sigma 150-600 e-mount, as it seems to let the image float more organically, and doesn't have a sharp jerk when you reach the end of it's optical movement. Totally usable shooting whales off a 21' boat, with a little gyro stab help from Gyroflow, which wasn't usable with the 150-600mm even at the same 400mm range or less.Biggest reason I hoped this would work so well is not having a huge risk to shoot without rails and lens support. I'd take it off when moving the camera, but it's rock solid if on sticks and only the FX6 body is on the plate. Makes run and gun use possible, without risking lens mounts and lens-contacts which are mission critical for AF to work.I'll update with any negatives if I find them, but so far it's easily 10/10 on all the points I bought it for, and it's over delivered with lots of extras! (like the macro, and great OS)Zero sharpness issues shooting 4K on FX6, flares are quite controlled and the hood works well, colours are great and match the sharp bright look of the Sigma 24-70/2.8 e mount very well.(Didn't buy from B&H, as it was on rebate for less within Canada, but posting here for the review)

finally a telephoto zoom you can take a selfie with
13 October 2022

Through the years I had several 100-400mm lenses, two Canons, two Sigmas, and also Tamron 150-500. This one is better than any of them in more than one way.The focal range 50-400 is really convenient, in many situations 50mm is just as useful as 400mm. The lens pretty sharp at all focal length, better than Sigmas that are sharp only at the very center. Contrast is very good, AF is reasonably fast, and image stabilization is good, though not exceptional, which can only be a problem for handheld video. The only negative I noticed so far was a strong flare when I caught the sun right above the frame. That was one picture out of hundreds I've taken, so it might be just something rare.
