This lens is perfect as an all around lens. I also have a Nikkor 55-300mm. Although, this lens is maxed at 270mm, its not that big of a deal (to me). The picture quality is noticeably better then the Nikkor 18-55mm and Nikkor 55-300mm. This lens is shorter than the Nikkor55-300mm. Focus: as fast as the Nikkor 55-300mm (if not faster) Price: less then half of the Nikkor 18-300mm.

Good all in one lens. I was looking for something versatile for my outdoor photography. I did not rate this 5 stars because the lens seems to be a little dark when it comes to the pictures. I had heard that from other people also. Just have to try a little harder to get the right adjustments.

Nothing high end, but a good value lens. Great range, easy to use. Build is nice quality. Extreme cropping can show colors around objects, depends largely on the lighting and composition. But for a travel lens it should be about all you need.

I have been using Tamron lenses for many years with very few problems which Tamron took care of expeditiously.
If you're looking for a great all-around lens, this is it. I was a little skeptical going into it, but was tired of missing a shot because I wanted to change lenses. I read the technical reviews available on several websites and realize that when a lens is designed to be everything it will sacrifice performance in some areas. So far, in practice, I am completely satisfied. It is a little slow in focusing, but that hasn't caused me any trouble yet. The lens will creep if pointed down without the lock on, but so do most big zooms. If you photograph many grids, you might notice the distortion toward either extreme, but so far my shots spanning the zoom range have not produced any noticeable or offensive distortion (subject and composition will affect this). The lens size is rather amazing since it's not much different from the D3100 18-55 kit lens... that I will never use again (no hard feelings toward the Nikon lens, just no reason to use it with this one). I have been satisfied with the bokeh when the shot is such that it should yield some. My other reference points are a Nikon 70-300/f3.5 and prime 35/f1.8 (plus the 18-55 kit), used on a D3100 and 5100.
This was an excellent alternate lense for both wide angle and zoom. instead of carrying and changing two lenses all the time. i bought this a month ago...and still havent explored to the fullest but sofar its been doing a great Job. what i dislike, or probably have to learn about this is, to shoot in the night lights..as most of my pics were shaky or blurry...when i took the close up shots in sports mode. well....i did compare this with the original Nikon lense 55-200/300...and dint find much of a difference...but clearly gave an advantage of not changing the lenses alternatively. i enjoy this single lense for multiple usage.
Fragile lens. Be careful not to drop it. Not as rugged as a Nikkor. However, it is excellent glass and a great value. The Piezo drive is very quiet.
First a comment about B&H. I called them with a few questions regarding this lens. The guy I talked to was courteous and was able to answer my questions. I ordered the lens and it arrived in less than 48 hours. I'm 400 miles from NY. Great company. Now for the lens. I'm an amateur who limited understanding about f-stops, shutter speeds, depth of field, etc. I have a Nikon D4200 with the kit lenses supplied. I wanted a single lens so I wouldn't have to carry my gadget bag everywhere. This lens does the trick. Just playing around with it, I'm very pleased with the results. Focuses well. I'm sure I'm going to be glad I bought this lens. I know it won't stand up to a $5000 lens but it will do just fine for me.
This lens is a fantastic walk around lens...it is not quite as tack sharp as a Nikon prime lens...but it is sharp enough. I have purchased four of these lenses for grandchildren of mine who have an interest in photography. It meets their needs from everything from butterflies, flowers, sports, landscapes, and some portraiture. This lens has good color rendition, nice background fades, and reasonable edge to edge sharpness. When they master some techniques...they can move to Nikon glass. I also keep one around for me and use it often. And no, i do not work for Tamron...i just like their product.
Just shot over 1000 photos during a South America Cruise. Everything from 100 degree heat to freezing temperatures. From Machu Picchu to Antarctica, every photo, every image was spot on. It was totally reliable. It offers fabulous resolution and picture clarity. I have this lens on my Nikon D5200 and the identical lens, different mount, on my Sony A850. This lens has proven utterly reliable, light weight, stable and is the perfect lens for travel photography when only one lens will do.
