Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC Usd Lens For Nikon F

Just as a painter instinctively reaches for the right brush, a portrait artist reaches for an 85mm lens. The focal length is ideal for producing a pleasing image with true-to-life facial features in accurate proportion. While a wide-angle lens makes close objects appear larger than they are, and longer telephotos compress and flatten features, the 85mm medium telephoto is just right. Plus the working distance between you and your subject is perfect for making the personal connection that’s often missing when using a zoom. The Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 is the world’s first 85mm fast-aperture lens with image stabilization. Its unique design allows us to include our VC (Vibration Compensation) system-without the lens becoming too large or heavy. What’s more, our SP 85mm F/1.8 delivers edge-to-edge viewfinder brightness for ease of composition and superior low-light performance. The fast aperture of the F/1.8 also offers the perfect balance of subject sharpness and bokeh, that dreamy blur which separates your portrait subject from the background.

Autofocus Nightmare

Also when I pan and stop on a subject, the image often jumps. This is terrible. I turned off VC and the jumping went away, but autofocus still didn't work. I switched to one-shot autofocus and that never worked either, not even one time. All the reviews I've read here and on YouTube got only good things to say about this lens. Good available light portrait lens. Great having a vibration reduction option.

This is a stunning lens and the vibration reduction comes in very handy for hand-held work. I am using it with a Nikon DX camera and as such it becomes a longer portrait lens, ideal head and shoulder shots. The lens is incredibly sharp from f/2.2 but a little soft at f/1.8. Bokeh is good and handling is fine. The lens feels solid with a mainly metal feel and it looks good. Auto focus is fast and accurate enough. Overall a good portrait lens. An interesting option have vibration reduction in a reasonably affordable portrait lens (cheap compared to f/1.4 lenses) and would also come in handy at concerts and music venues where you can get reasonably close to the action.

I use the iOptron SkyTracker. Both of my other Tamrons were made in Japan and so is this one, although I understand some are made in China, not that it matters but I thought I would mention it. My lens was purchased recently from B&H and tested for normal use and astrophotography. The lens is nice and sharp in the center and stays that way in the corners, even wide open at f/1.8. Stopping down the lens results in slightly but noticeable improvement across the frame but it is very nice wide open. At f/1.8 there is significant vignetting (darkening of the corners). This is largely gone by f/2.8. It is easily fixed during raw conversion. The colors rendered by the lens are very pleasing and accurate with no obvious color cast. The background bokeh is also very smooth making the subject stand out nicely. This is great for portraits. The VC also seems to work well, although sometimes the image is just a bit sharper with it off if the shutter speed is high enough to freeze the action. Finally, it auto-focuses quickly and accurately. My lens needed a slight adjustment to the auto-focus (+5) to make it perfectly sharp when not using Live View. So, it's a very nice lens for daytime use, but I mainly got it for the night sky and nightscapes. It also shines in this role, with sharp stars edge to edge. Mine has maybe the slightest bit of coma in the upper left and right corners (full frame Canon 5D Mark III) and is essentially perfect on the bottom corners. I can see no astigmatism anywhere. Also, there appears to be no improvement when stopping down the lens from f/1.8, a very good performance. I will probably use the lens mostly at f/2.8 on the sky because of the vignetting wide open, which does improve on stopping down. The lens is very well built and fits the camera snuggly. I would definitely recommend this lens.

This lens has proven to be very capable. I was debating on either this lens or spending extra on a Sigma 85mm f/1.4. However I decided that I wanted to save the near $500 and go for a lens company I know has some of the best Image Stabilization I have ever seen.I purchased this lens for two reasons; I wanted a sharp prime lens for portraiture, and a sharp prime lens for landscapes. I am well aware this is not meant for it, however I use a panoramic head for high megapixel landscape shooting. I shoot a Nikon D850 and this lens gives great clarity. I will be sticking to Tamron for quite some time.

Razer Sharp - made for the highmegapixel wars

What is this strange magic? look at the uploaded pictures, this thing has bokeh like no other lens, it cuts with detail like a katana through a soft cantelope!!! But that sharpness works against it too. Instead of giving you a nice skin tone, it shows all the imperfections, even from 5 meters away. it has super nice colors, cannot be described, not cold and dull like nikon raws, or too warm like canon jpegs, but still not as pleasing as sony jpegs. It has its own character. Now of course, lightroom, photoshop can give you colors to your liking, but this does not take finished product pictures like the sigma art series. its not for everyone. It has great contrast, even though its only 1.8 (only, boy we are spoiled). Very solid construction, not too front heavy like all that glass sigma lenses, but very well put together, all buttons click with assurance, very very very smooth focusing ring, just so cool to look at. Makes L series look weak! For the asking price, you cant ask for more: weather sealed, fluorine coating (no need for filter as protection), image stabilized (i can take pictures in complete darkness with assurance of having something to look at, about 3.5 stops advantage). Yes, i do want to take pictures in the rain, yes, i do want to take awesome pictures when it snows, this is why i got this! No, i cant do that with an 85mm Canon 1.2 L, canon 135mm too far for most situations, people cant hear what you're saying from that distance. Sigma 85 1.4? 2011 called, it says no weathersealing. Wait for sunny days to have fun. Well i dont have to. i also own the tamron sp 35mm 1.8, and this is even sharper, but same character. This is crazy sharp, i cant say this enough, i would go as far as say that it's sharper than the 50 sigma 1.4 art i also own, and that was till now was the sharpest i had. no autofocusing issues, 90% of my shots are in focus. I hope this review helped some of you. Weathersealing and image stabilization were supposed to be its only selling points, but this thing is crazy sharp!!! I hate how sharp it is, i can see all the imperfections on my girlfriend's forehead from 5-7 meters away. I dont want to see that much detail!! To me its a five star all the way, just because it's such an overachiever.

Really happy with this lens.
24 December 2020

There are so many choices for portrait lenses these days, and most of them are outstanding (including this one). If money were no object, I would be shooting with the Leitz 90mm Cine Thalia (over $22K), or even the lowly Leica 90mm f/1.5 (much cheaper at about $13K). But alas, my budget is sub-$1K. And, I needed one with stabilization, since my camera body does not have IBIS. So, this is the only lens that fits the bill. The good news, is that the image quality from this lens is fantastic, and I am able to shoot at lower shutter speeds without a tripod. If I was shooting exclusively with a tripod, I probably would have chosen something different, perhaps the Sigma 85 f/1.4.

Sharp, but has autofocus issues
18 April 2017

I have two Nikons professional zooms -- the 24-70 f/2.8E and the 70-200mm f/2.8G but was looking to supplement the longer zoom with a prime option. The Tamron 85 gets good reviews and comes with the bonus of having stabilization (VC is Tamrons term), which is unique in its class. I really wanted to love this lens, but my overall experience wasnt good. The first red flag was that the lens was front-focusing severely and required a +18 adjustment in AF fine-tune on my D750. Having made the adjustment, though, it seemed to focus well at all distances, and I was very impressed with the sharpness of the lens. I compared it to my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 -- I know, it's not exactly apples to apples -- but the Tamron was WAY sharper. (I guess it should be for 3x the price.) I compared it to my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 -- I know, it's not exactly apples to apples -- but the Tamron was WAY sharper. (I guess it should be for 3x the price.) But just for comparison, the Tamron was as sharp in the center of the frame at f/1.8 as the Nikon was at f/4. And the Nikon didn't catch up to the Tamron in the corners until around f/5.6. The second red flag, though, and really the nail in the coffin, was the results I got during a portrait session last weekend. The autofocus was just very inconsistent and the lens missed at least 30% of the time. Some of the shots were back-focused, some were front-focused, and on some it was hard to tell. At first I wondered if it could have been that I was using some of the outer focus points in my session, whereas Id been using only the center point in my initial testing. That wasnt it. It was just inconsistent and I cant live with that. Some Nikon users have been very happy with this lens and other Tamrons, especially the newer SP models. Perhaps I got a bad copy and a second one would perform flawlessly, but my recent experience with the new 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 was similarly uninspiring, so Im returning both and am not inclined to try the brand again. (There are many reports of third-party lenses having focus issues with Nikon bodies, and one reviewer at CameraLabs attributes this to the fact that Nikon does not share its AF algorithms with other manufacturers. I have no idea how true this is, but it makes sense to me, as there seem to be fewer complaints when Sigma and Tamron lenses are used with Canon or Sony bodies.) On the plus side, this lens is very attractive and has great build quality. When it nails focus, its as sharp as I could hope for. The VC on the lens is useful, but not impressive. I had some blurred images even at 1/60. The downside for me was simply the AF inconsistency. If the accuracy rate had been even 90% I probably would have kept the lens. (My better Nikons are 95-98% under good conditions.) But a sharp lens that can't deliver consistently is a no-go for me.

Sharper on the corners than in the center up to F/2.0

Buy it with confidence. This lens will deliver sharp photos from F/2.8 and up. F/1.8 and F/2.0 apertures produce ok photos only, but from F/2.8 and up, it is pretty good. Have a thing in mind: This lens is sharper on the corners than in the center. I have never seen a thing like that in my lifetime and I guarantee you that I have owned and tested a lot of lenses. The rule of thumb is that a portrait lens is sharper in the middle and goes softer as you move to the corners and extreme corners and that is what 99% of the lenses out there do. This one does not follow this rule of thumb. It is far more sharper in the corners than in the middle! I do weddings and VC helps a lot in the low light churches and receptions. Fast and precise auto focus, worries here. Construction is nice and has a contemporary design. It worths every penny.

Spend the extra buck and buy the Nikon 85mm 1.4 version

I will try to be fair in my review of this lens.Basically, it can never be 100% satisfactorily sharp at 1.8 wide. I like to shoot at 1.8 exclusively with and without flash. No matter how I try to achieve a sharp image it just didn't match up.Maybe 2 out of 10 shots comes out 80% satisfactory.I moved to hoot at 2.8 wide, and the image quality is still mediocre. I would have really loved this lens but I have finally made up my mind to send it back. I will spend the extra money to get the Nikon 1.4. And I hope to stick with Nikon, no more 3rd party lens's.

The CA was just something to strong to be acceptable. I have returned the lens. I will look to canon or sigma for my portrait lens

A am a long time canon user and amateur astronomer familiar with the physics of optics. Recently purchased a canon 80d and a sigma 150-600mm from adorama. Both are excellent products from an execellent supplier. I wanted to upgrade my portrait Lens with one that had great sharpness and a low f stop for two summer weddings. After much research , I choose the Tamron SP 85mm f1.8 DI USD. Adorama processed my order quickly and I was very excited to use my new lens. My first test of the lens showed a strong chromatic aberration wide open for bright objects against a dark background. I took images from f1.8 to f16. I found the chromatic aberration to be very strong with bright blue/violet halos around the white objects even beyond f4. I took images of the same scene and lighting with other canon lens and the sigma 150-600mm for comparison. The sigma showed essentially no chromatic aberration. A superb lens at a great price. I sold my canon 100-400mm after I purchased the sigma. Expect for the chromatic aberration the tamron is a fine lens with great feel and an excellent build. I could have obtained a bad copy. I hope this is not typical of the tamron. The CA was just something to strong to be acceptable. I have returned the lens. I will look to canon or sigma for my portrait lens.
