Use the Tanita BC-545N if you want to get the most out of your sports performance and if you want to start living a healthier lifestyle. There are many factors besides your body weight that are important. The Tanita BC-545N knows this too. Measuring your weight is a piece of cake compared to what else the BC-545N can calculate. For example, it knows your BMI value, fat percentage, body water percentage, muscle and bone mass, visceral fat level, and metabolic age within 15 seconds. Working towards better health becomes easier and more fun, because you'll have all the important factors in one overview. In addition, the Tanita BC-545N remembers everything for you, so that you can see any improvement in the memory right away. Note: the Tanita BC-601 is suitable for children aged 5-17, but can only calculate weight, body fat percentage, and BMI value. Note: using a scale with body analysis may lead to health risks for pregnant women, children, or people that use medical electronic devices. Check the manual before use.

The Tanita scales are great, giving very accurate and detailed readings. However, the presentation of the readings is very obscure, and not improved much by the literature that came with the item. It was very difficult to set up the machine in the first place and I'm still not sure how to access historic data, though it's supposed to have been stored somewhere. The readings cycle cryptically and apart from the occasional kg or % it's very unclear from the screen what measurement it's actually giving you - you have to refer to the booklet every time. The buttons are confusing and the booklet isn't terribly clear either - there are even some contradictory statements, probably arising from translation from another language. I love the metabolic age feature as it makes me much younger than I actually am! I don't find the segmental part very useful though. It's possible to swop between kgs and stones and pounds but awkward and you have to switch it off in between. If you set it on imperial measurements it gives very strange readings for body fat etc, so it's best to just get used to kgs and live with it. Generally, great fun to play around with and I'mpleased with them.

I don't have access to DEXA (as most people) so can't really tell how accurate RD-545 is, however it has been much more closer to the results with a body-fat clipper than other models without handles. A good plus of this model is that it also tells about the degree of visceral fat, which is an important indicator to know about. Also muscle quality around the body is useful to know where to focus on the training. The app is a bit clunky in terms of presenting the data (hence 4 instead of 5 stars), though it runs without problem.

I bought this because I am about 2/3 through my fitness and weight loss goal. I want to lose weight and develop good muscle tone and this will give me objective info to help me reach my goals. This monitor is excellent for all round health management. It measures visceral fat, analyses the amount of muscle you have and muscle quality. It even measures your bones - which don't weight as much as people think - around 2.5-3 kg! I wanted an objective measurement to record my progress. Guests can use it too - one of my friends thought she was not strong but after getting a metabolic ages 15 years younger than her actual age is now cracking on with all those physical tasks she wasn't sure she could do.It is not cheap - but if you have muscle development goals then it ... A brilliant product giving a wealth of information to help guide you to sculpt your body in both weight and exercise, allowing you to have all the information there on your phone easy to access and even upload to print as PDF.I had the previous model but these are fabulous. I take steroids for Addisons and Respiratory disease and these scales help me manage my muscle quality and keep strong avoiding muscle wastage which is a side effect from my medication, I can see any water retention and even how my bones are doing yes its all a guideline but better to have some insight than non at all. A bit pricy but worth every penny in my honest opinion. Before I shed most of my weight I used the professional version of these scales at the obesity clinic, I then bought a set ... Lets get the negative/elephant in the room out of the way, yes this is very expensive, there's no getting around that and you'll need to decide if it's worth it to you. On to the positives, this scale will provide you with every little bit of information on your body you can think about. Setting up the scales is very easy, a lot of the control is done through the app on your phone and to get the most out of the scales you need to combine with a smartphone. Once set up, it's really easy to use. You kick off the process from your phone and step on the scales. A short while later all the results are fed back to your phone. From your phone you can get a break down of your weight, body fat%, visceral fat, weight of muscles, quality of muscle to name a few. It works great ... It works great with multiple users, again you kick off the process from each individuals' smartphone and step on. The app will even then take all of the results and feed it in to the Apple Health app.I recently went for a health assessment provided by a very well known private health insurance/provider. The information that I got from these scales dwarfed the information i was provided on my body by my health assessment. With the wealth of information and the ability to track it over time, these scales should make it very easy to keep track of changes to your body over the years. Yes it's still a lot of money, for me I can see the return on my investment.
From the first day I received the product, I already found the measure figures fluctuate without good reasons. It requires very rigid surface, even a hard wood floor can cause problem if the floor has slight uneven between wood boards. So it is best to be used on floor tile in bathroom, preferably on one large tile. After eliminating all possible unstable factors and tested for a few weeks, I am sure this device has its flaw and is not accurate at all. First, there is about 3% different in body fat between its figure and the one you get from the more professional device in the Virgin club. I understand that you cannot compare a cheaper one with a much more expensive one. But if it can give me a stable figure in its own scale, I would accept that because at least I ... First, there is about 3% different in body fat between its figure and the one you get from the more professional device in the Virgin club. I understand that you cannot compare a cheaper one with a much more expensive one. But if it can give me a stable figure in its own scale, I would accept that because at least I can know if I am getting fitter or not. But unfortunately it fails. In order to test, I use it when I am absolutely naked, at just wake up in the morning, finished toilet, without drinking water, and then get the figure. The next day, same conditions, the weight remained the same, but the body fat increase over 2%. So if I am 55 Kg, my body fat increased over 1 Kg in one day without overeating. The other time, I measured it before I went running, then after running for 30 mins and waited after cooling down, without drinking and eating, measured it again, the weight remained the same, but the body fat increased 1.6%, so it means my body fat increased 0.9 KG after running 30 mins. I wish the maker company can give me a good explanation for that and please don't tell me that my body save more fat in order to keep me warm (LoL).That's the reason I say this scale is not reliable at all, except for the weight. In addition, without those expensive function, it is chunky and not nice at home.
It's often tempting to write a review quickly. I'm glad I didn't because at first I thought these scales were fabulous. I drowned in apparently useful data, my fitness goals seemed scientifically formed and the results measured... and then... I got to know them really well, asked support questions from Tanita Europe, and found that they are not all they at first seem.Let me make it clear: I refer in all the below to the ecosystem of scales, app, documentation included with the product, documentation available in the app and online, and after sales support. And for that combination this extraordinarily expensive item gets two stars. Well, 1.5 actually but I'm feeling generous. Why? And for that combination this extraordinarily expensive item gets two stars. Well, 1.5 actually but I'm feeling generous. Why? Here goes:Many of the measurements are given in the app in a way that shows them on a scale of what is 'Under/Normal/Over' etc. - and at first this seems very useful. In fact, it's all messed up. Here's a good example: the app tells me that my BMI is slightly to the right of the middle of the Normal BMI range. But it also tells me that my weight is very very close to going into the Underweight range. How can this be? BMI is determined by height and weight. It's not a great measure but it's widely used and simple to understand but critically, if your BMI is bang on the middle of normal, then your weight is too, with few exceptions (seriously muscular athletes for example, one of which I am not!)So I raised this with Tanita support and after not accepting the first answer, was told that their 'Under/Normal/Over weight ranges in the app are not relative to height or any other factor: the answer was:"The healthy ranges for body weight are fixed as below without taking height into account.Male: 65kg-95kgFemale: 50kg-75kg"There is a LOT wrong with this approach. Firstly, whether I am a 5 foot one inch male or a 6 foot sixer, my actual weight will be shown against that 'healthy range' regardless of my height. That's IMHO crazy and possibly dangerous.I personally am of almost exactly average height for a UK male and am shown as being a tiny bit above the 'Underweight' category. There's no such thing as 'underweight' without reference to height and possibly age, gender and ethnicity. Tanita knows that. Everyone knows that. And yet they present the data in this ridiculous way without clarifying that it is a non-standard and perverse way of doing so.Worse still, their 'healthy range' for men looks to be just plain wrong. I checked with the NHS and various other sources and for my height and age, the healthy range of weight should be 55.4kg to 74.8kg. Compare this to Tanita's opinion that regardless of height, age or gender the healthy range is 65-96kg.See the problem? They will be effectively telling any male, of any height, that if they weigh less that 65KG they are underweight. That's more than TEN KILOS higher than the NHS figure. So a whole bunch of men risk being told that they are underweight, possibly seriously so, when they are not. A perfectly average man of 5 foot would be told that he is seriously underweight...This is a general problem with RD545 ecosystem: lack of clarity as to what measures are relative to other relevant factors (height, gender, age etc) and which are just absolutes. Here's another example: my leg muscles mass is shown as being 'Low' and my leg muscle quality is shown as being one small segment better than low. Now, I'm a sixty year old man who walks ten miles a day, uses bikes and ellipticals regularly and does weights three times a week with one day focussed on legs. So I think Hmmm, this sounds odd... then I look at the PDF Export of my data, and it has a graph showing I have the 'Leg Muscle Score' of a man half my age. See the problem? In the app, the point of reference for 'Low/Average/High is not stated. Is it an average of all men at a median age? Is it relative to a fit twenty year old (which is what the graph in the PDF would seem to imply? The truth is, I'll never know without lengthy series of emails to support and I've had enough of that because they are polite but not very helpful.Again, THIS STUFF MATTERS. If you're a sixty year old then your fitness goals are very different to those of a twenty year old and being told in one part of the app that you are a Low or a low side of Average, but in another part of the app that you've got the legs of a thirty year old is... confusing. So let's go back to that PDF. It has errors. I have discussed them with Tanita and they say they'll get the app programmers to look at it but just so as you know, the errors are there. There's missing data and there are random numbers appearing on graphs that seem to mean nothing. It's kind of a mess and it's not what you expect at this price point. Finally, one last and fairly serious gripe: how do you stand on and use the damned things? The instruction book tells you where to put your feet but says nothing specific about how to hold the handle. So, because my scales are close to a wall, I pick the handle up UNDERarm, hold it with my elbows into my sides so that it's about a foot from my chest, and off I go. But I recently got to thinking about this so I found a Tanita Video on the internet and it shows a young lady picking the handle up OVERarm and contains the admonishment that you should hold your arms out straight in front of you for best accuracy. This is not mentioned anywhere in the instruction manual but, ever-curious, I gave it a go. Several times. At different times of day I would take two measurements in quick succession: once 'my way' and once the hard-to-find but 'official' way. And guess what? You get markedly and consistently different results. So I now have three months worth of data that may (or may not, who knows?) show useful information about the degrees and rates of change of various parameters but in terms of whether the actual data I got was 'right' or not, the answer seems to be 'no' - because I've been holding the handle 'wrongly' - because they don't bother to document in the box or the app how to do it 'right'.Here are some examples of the difference between two sets of measurements taken moments apart, holding the handle 'my way' and then 'their way':% Body fat 14.9 vs 17.2Muscle Mass 118.2 vs 115Visceral fat 8 versus 9Water % 63.4 versus 60.4Again, this really matters. I went through a phase a couple of weeks ago when the scales said for a few days that I was over hydrated - being anything over 65% - and so I slacked off the old water a bit to bring it down. But had I been holding the handle 'their way' I likely would have had a reading a few percent lower. In other words, poor documentation and explanation caused me to make an unnecessary behavioural change. The scales cost many multiples of the cost of many others. At this price, there should be clarity about how to use them and about what the data they produce means. In my opinion there is not enough of either to justify the price - by a long shot.
Being a PT I've used many body fat scales in the past and was looking for one to replace the cheap one I already had at home. I found this product and the price made me assume this would be one of the top products in the industry. How wrong I was... not only does it take an age to measure (standing with your arms in the air for 2+ minutes) it also is so inaccurate! Weight seems to be the only thing it can measure as all the other statistics it comes up with are so random. One minute you're this then you step back on straight away and it's changed by 2% which in my case can be the difference of apparently gaining 2kg worth of body fat!Absolutely stay away from this product and save your money.
I'm delighted with the Tanita RD-545. I take health and fitness seriously, and like to monitor and track my body composition. This product provides all the measures that you could ask of it. I monitor my blood pressure separately. The "My Tanita" app developers have recently promised to reinstate the recording of weight to 1/10th of a pound. The scales themselves provide this level of accuracy, but curiously the app does not. However, overall I'm very happy. The equipment is expensive and therefore I could only give 4* for value.
