Comparing the TASCAM DR-05X to a video mike

I like the portability of the TASCAM, the fact that I can use USB power, and the ease with which I put files directly into Cubase. I always thought there'd be a wide range of potential uses from impromptu recordings to assisting with youtube clips. With my standard video mike, it can struggle with capturing a range of sounds of say the spoken voice whilst playing an overdriven guitar (where the amp is miked up direct to a DAW). The video mike stands up quite well when I'm u sing voice and acoustic guitars, but the TASCAM is definitely better positioned to capture both voice and overdriven guitar (and perhaps even sound from a 3rd source simultaneously) when doing youtube clips, without the need for mixers and the like.

But for such a small and convenient device, it is well worth the money. Adorama is a great vender. The accessory package somehow was missing a windscreen. I contacted Adorama Customer Service, they went extra miles and got it for me from the supplier, even though it was not their fault. I bought some camera and audio equipment from them before, I also had good experience.

It does the job
19 December 2019

I don't know much about audio recorders, but saw this on sale during the holiday sales season for $120 + free SD card (16 GB). So I got it, and as far as I can tell, it does the job. I like the fact that it takes AA batteries. I like that it takes micro SD cards up to 128GB. I like the adjustable mics. I like the USB connectability (for both transferring files and as a microphone for recording on another device). The recordings are definitely much cleaner than the ones off my computer's built-in mics (probably not saying much), but they still do seem to have a little bit of noise in them if you listen closely. (That doesn't upset me, but it's something to know. I don't know if the noise better or worse than similar recorders.) The recordings are definitely much cleaner than the ones off my computer's built-in mics (probably not saying much), but they still do seem to have a little bit of noise in them if you listen closely. (That doesn't upset me, but it's something to know. I don't know if the noise better or worse than similar recorders.) The manual that comes with it isn't super helpful, but there's a reference guide that you can download from the Tascam website that is more helpful. You can also get a firmware update while you're there. The size of the unit is not small exactly, but I knew that going in, and it's still portable, and it's not heavy. It doesn't seem like it would be weatherproof, but I'm not sure if similar recorders are any more so. Mostly the unit is relatively easy to use (or easy to learn to use if you read through the reference manual and do some test recordings on it). However, I still haven't fully trained myself to push the record button twice to get it to begin recording. That's the main thing that is a little hard to learn. There are many interesting advanced recording/playback functions -- overdubbing, marking, etc. -- that are probably beyond what I'll ever use, but they're there. I have taken advantage of the ability to push a single button during recording to end the current file and keep recording on a new file. That's easier than marking up the files for a simpleton like me. The speaker works, but it's quieter than I'd like even at full volume. I guess that forces you to listen to recordings by plugging in headphones, or transferring them to another machine with good speakers, which are probably the better ways to listen to the recordings anyway. Mostly I wanted to use the unit to record nature sounds when I go hiking, but I also wanted to potentially use it for recording voices indoors, etc. The first thing to know is that if you want to take it outside, you must get a windscreen for it, or else you will have hopelessly terrible recordings if there's the slightest bit of wind. (I got a Movo WS-G9 for $18, which fits this and has a little loop which I use to clip on an extra small carabiner.) The unit definitely picks up everything that I hear, though I (not an audio recording pro) haven't figured out (yet) how to get the focus on the sounds I'm really interested in (if it's even possible without extra equipment). At close distances (within a few feet), pointing the unit at the sound source does the trick, but at longer distances, such as is the case most of the time outside, pointing the unit at a sound source doesn't seem to make much of a difference in terms of getting a focused sound. So what that means is that even when I'm in city parks where the closest major road is, say, half a mile away, the unit still picks up a lot of background traffic noise. (On the recordings the traffic noise sounds louder than it does live, when I suppose my brain is filtering out a lot of the noise.) It may be that the unit's mics aren't designed for long distances, or maybe I just need to filter things out with software or settings somehow. So I won't really fault the recorder. There's a little bit of noise when you handle the recorder, and button presses definitely are recorded, too. One unexpected thing is that I picked up some interference on one recording when I was walking along a railroad / power line right of way (where there's a lot of electrical equipment). So I assume that the electrical stuff somehow interfered with the recording -- sort of how like back in the day, cell phones could interfere with conference phones. I'm a little surprised that technology hasn't advanced enough since those days that the interference couldn't be mitigated on this unit. (But, again, I don't know if other similar units would have this problem.) Another unexpected thing -- this time good -- is that there's a little built-in tuner for musicians. I haven't tuned anything with it (yet), but it's nice to have, I suppose. All that said, the unit does the job in most situations. It's relatively portable and easy to use. The sound quality seems fine, and the price wasn't terrible.

Loads Of Features & Won't Break The Bank

I got this mainly to provide an audio track when filming with my drone. However, this is proving itself to be a far more versatile machine than I would have expected for the money! For openers, The sound recording quality with the built-in mics is fantastic. I was expecting to hear something on the tinny side, but the fidelity of the built-in mics is really impressive. It's right up there with any good quality stage mic. If you're in an acoustically good room, you can get some near studio quality recordings. The flexibility of the recording format quality is another great feature. You can readily adapt between times when maximum quality of the recording is paramount, & those times when quality isn't as important as recording time length. The non-destructive overdubbing is another wonderful feature. If you're playing with song arrangements, this is a great little tool to create all your synced tracks. The DR-40X will create multiple files that can be uploaded to a computer & then mixed down with a multi-track program. Right now, my favorite feature is the DR-40X's ability to record a second audio track at a different (user determined) recording level. That way, if sound levels exceed the main track's peak & go into clipping, there's a safety track that can be dubbed in. For example, I just filmed a musket volley for some Civil War Reenactors with my drone, using the DR-40X for audio. The vocals on the main audio track were fine, but the musket volley totally overdrove it & was heavily distorted. On the secondary track, being recorded at almost the lowest possible setting, the vocals were virtually inaudible, but the musket volley was clean, with no distortion. All it took was 30 seconds with the sound editing software to replace the distorted section of the track with the clean section. As of this writing, I've only had the machine a little over 2 weeks, so I've barely even scratched to surface of what it can do. But every time I play with a new feature, it's like opening up another birthday present. It's really a pleasure to use this recorder! Two things you will DEFINITELY want to get for this: A wind screen & a shock mount! These are just two must have items for any mic.

Nice option to learn from your playing
19 December 2022

I recently purchased the TASCAM DR-05X Handheld Portable Recorder, and I'm so glad I did! This recorder is easy to use and has great sound quality. The dual mic system captures sound from all directions, so no matter what I'm recording, I know I'm getting an accurate representation. The built-in speakers make playback easy, and there are tons of settings to customize the recording. The battery life is great, too - I can easily get through a full recording session without having to recharge. Overall, I would highly recommend the TASCAM DR-05X Handheld Portable Recorder - it's an excellent choice for anyone looking for a quality recorder for a reasonable price.

Performed much better than I anticipated!

I bought this recorder so I could lay down song ideas while playing my acoustic guitar away from the home studio where I have Studio One on my computer. Typically for me, when the weather is good I'll just go out on my deck where I have a lawn chair and small table (to hold the recorder and my beverage of choice!). It works great! I just set the unit on the table with the mics hanging over the edge at guitar height. My advice, don't automatically set the record level at max, test it at various levels. An over-driven record level doesn't sound good here. Once the level is set (where I leave it all the time now) I record at 48k and gosh I was very pleasantly surprised at just how good it sounds. The mics are quite directional so one doesn't get a lot of external noise on the recording. The directions that come with the unit are easy to follow for the most part. The booklet is kind of thick but that's because it's written in at least half a dozen languages so don't be put off by that. For me, the beauty here is being able to spontaneously record ideas, perhaps in a variety of different ways, without having to set up the mics etc. in the home studio. With this recorder I just set it down, turn it on, and press record when I want to save an idea. It doesn't get any easier than that! Later I'll download those idea takes to my computer and decide which version I prefer. From there I work out all the parts and after that I'll do my best effort using Studio One. The only problem I had is when I connected it to my iMac the first time. When making that first connection It took awhile for the iMac to identify the Drivers(?) and that confused me. I got in touch with TASCAM support and worked out the problem in no time at all. In fact, the problem was of my own making as I was too impatient to wait for the initial connection and Driver download to be made (assuming I understood what happened correctly). Once I made the connection that first time I could just plug in the cable and easily download a music file from the DR-O7X to the iMac. After that I just imported it to Studio One. Very simple! So I am very pleased with this unit. It does just what I hoped it would do and it does that well. I haven't tried to use it as a remote recording device for live music with a full band etc. so I really cannot comment on that. But my guess is that it would work quite well there also.

Like David in his review, I also experienced major RF interference when using the built-in microphones on the Tascam DR-07X. When recording audio from my iPhone 12 Mini using an external mic there was no issue. However, when I switched to the built-in microphones there was a loud pulsating static sound that basically drowned out what was being recorded. And I didn't realize it until I had made several recordings using the built-in mics thinking they were as good as an external one. I haven't tested this recorder with other electronic devices or other phones. I can say that if your audio source is an iPhone and you are anywhere near it and using the built-in mics, your recording will be seriously affected.

Versatile but not for the faint hearted.

If you overcome some user unfriendly issues you have a very useful sound recorder. Things that would confuse the user are the pre-amp and input level "ground loop" noise from what is either RF or static. A system reinitialise cures the noise problem. And you need a dead cat or muffler for clean voice recording and close distance which cuts out breath and splosives. The second to make use of the Tascam X as a direct microphone you need a usb to micro USB data cable else a charging cable won't work with your PC. This is an entry level sound recording tool. Series users need XLR for external mics which the DR-07x does not have. Pluses AA and usb powered. Lightweight. Difficult to find some of its deeper features, however overdubbing is present. Very sensitive field recorder also for collecting sound recording. Very high resolution 24bit depth. Beats any phone or computer mic for amateur audio. Dead cat and monitor head phones are essential accessories.

Zero latency overdub is great!

I bought this to collaborate with band mates when we couldn't meet up. After fighting pc audio latency issues, I bought this for the zero latency overdub feature. I love it! It can mount on a tripod. It has many recording options so it takes some time to learn, but a few minutes into the instructions and I was able to set it up for overdub. You can record a new track separately from the original and they are perfectly in sync when you import back to the pc. Lots of options for internal and external mics. I've tried a few things like external audio mic, recording a practice session with the internal mics, plugging guitar multi effects directly. All worked well. You have to check recording levels but there is a simple way to adjust sensitivity. The one negative is ... MoreI bought this to collaborate with band mates when we couldn't meet up. You have to check recording levels but there is a simple way to adjust sensitivity. The one negative is that you need to transfer audio files back and forth to the pc. But that's a small issue in exchange for all my overdubs having zero latency. For a versatile home studio recorder, this is pretty great. If you need to make professional quality recordings, maybe it's worth investing in more gear, but for the amateur who needs to make some recordings, this is a great device. Buy this over an audio interface.
