The Book Thief is a wonderful book, engrossing and realistic. The main character is a pre-teen girl and the story is told through her eyes. The book is appropriate for kids of that age, but also totally interesting to adults. Set during World War II in Europe, it is the story of a young girl whose mother abandons her for mysterious reasons that are never revealed. She is taken in by a tender-hearted couple, who also take in a Jewish friend, thus risking all their lives, and creating considerable suspense.

When friends ask, there are several books on my Must Read list, and this one is towards the top. It is told in a unique way, and will stick with you long after you have finished it. It does have many dark moments, but it is not an overall depressing book. There aren’t many books that really make you think, or change your view of the world. When I find one, I encourage everyone I know to read it. This is one of those books.

The Book Thief is a wonderful book, engrossing and realistic. The main character is a pre-teen girl and the story is told through her eyes. The book is appropriate for kids of that age, but also totally interesting to adults. This author is such an excellent story teller. Written so well, character building is exceptional! I am almost done with this book and I have thoroughly enjoyed it! It took about one chapter for me to really get the hang of it and I have been hooked since. As soon as I'm done, I will be on the hunt for my next book from this author.

Sometimes the writer takes a moment away from the storyline to create an announcement to the reader --- just a bonus sentence in the page's middle set off from the other paragraphs to describe the scene in a more direct way. It's a fascinating writing style but Mr. Zusak did you have to include such filthy words?Eye-opening in several areas the book marches you through WWII right alongside Liesel and her foster family after she loses her own. I must say that most books concerning WWII are always from the point of view of the Jews the persecuted or the other sympathetic allies. However this story reveals itself from the perspective of the everyday German families who were hurt by their own countrymen. What heartbreak they experienced around them forced on by their Nazi neighbors.As reflected in the title of the book there is something to be gained by the power of words. Liesel finds that power within herself and she aims to do something with that growing ability.I wish I could read it all over again minus about a tenth of the book to remove the worst of the rotten language.

Even when I reread a book, I have trouble picturing the characters without thinking of the actors that they were played by.-Do not give this novel to a young child.It's probably one of my favorite books ever written, but if you have a kid - or you are one - and you/they want to read this book, wait until they are 13 or maybe 14. There's quite a bit of cursing, in both English and German, that is in the book, so don't let a kid read it.Overall, you should read this novel as soon as you have a copy of it. It's simply a beautiful novel that everyone should read.
A bit surprised by the format as it is narrated by 'Death'. I have only read the first few chapters and they are short, which I prefer but up to now I am enjoying it and look forward to continuing with what I know to be a difficult subject.
