George Orr is a mild and unremarkable man who finds the world a less than pleasant place to live: seven billion people jostle for living space and food. But George dreams dreams which do in fact change realityβand he has no means of controlling this extraordinary power. Psychiatrist Dr William Haber offers to help. At first sceptical of George's powers, he comes to astonished belief. When he allows ambition to get the better of ethics, George finds himself caught up in a situation of alarming peril. The Lathe of Heaven offers a gripping exploration of unchecked power and the ethical dilemmas it creates in a world where reality is as mutable as a dream.

"The Lathe of Heaven" is Ursula Le Guin's homage to Philip K Dick. The dreams of the main protagonist are fully realised in reality when he wakes up. A doctor takes advantage of this man's powerful ability to create his ideal world. His worlds don't turn out the way he intended and as a result the dreamer wakes up to find himself in a nightmare reality. Powerful science fiction that any fan of the genre would enjoy.

I quite liked this, which is a bit interesting as it doesn't really seem like the type of sci-fi book I would. However, it was light on the sci-fi, and seemed to be more character-driven, which is what I do prefer. I liked how Le Guin was able to portray Haber's subtle power-hungry nature, and how George, throughout it all, remains fairly passive to the events. I also liked the aliens and Heather. In some ways, this novel reminded me of Inception. Not necessarily because of the dreams, but the way Haber gets inside George's dreams and changes them. So overall, a good, quick sci-fi story, with some Inception touches.
