Bought this bag for a planned carry-on bag for a hiking trip to Hawaii. Was concerned with the large size, but was able to cinch down the bag and had no issues carrying on! I do wish the smaller version had a bigger end pocket, as I would’ve opted for that one. Great selection of colors. Extremely durable with an inner mesh side pocket and zippered mesh pocket on the lid. Locking zippers; zippers durable but this makes the bag a little difficult to zip. Fairly comfortable as a backpack, though I do wish the straps clipped together across the chest. Overall I really like this bag, but I do wish there were a few more organizational and comfort details. However, NorthFace keeps it simple and I expect this bag will last a lifetime.

This is a fantastic bag. It's quite roomy and is sturdy enough that it supports itself even if the bag isn't full, which is a feature I had trouble finding in other brands. The material that the bag is woven out of is super, super study and feels like it would be really difficult to tear. The zippers are thick and of higher quality than any other duffle I've seen. There are also straps on the size of the bag that you can use to compress the bag if you aren't using all the space, so your stuff doesn't move around too much in it. Check out YouTube videos for more detail.I just recently packed the small bag with a mixture of clothes, my Nintendo Switch with a bunch of great games and all of its accessories, and a bunch of snacks and had no issue with room at all. I carried the bag on my back on a full day travel experience and the bag rested very comfortably on my back with all the aforementioned items in it.The small bag is the perfect size to fit in a carry on compartment on an airplane or train. The medium might be a little bit too large for carry on compartments if that's a deal breaker for anyone. Color selection is amazing. I got the purple/yellow/red one and absolutely love the look it has. This bag comes packed neatly in a mesh carrying case that you can compress the bag into and store. And finally, this bag seems really easy to clean. Both the exterior and interior are easily cleaned with disinfectant wipes. This is an overall excellent bag, and I am planning on picking up the extra small version at some point to use as a bag for the gym.

The bag is very rugged and well made. It's a simple design that is very practical. The only flaw is the zipper design. Specifically, it's the pull tab that needs a small design. When pulling to open, it works great. Not so much when closing. This is because the pull tab doesn't have enough of a gap to clear the huge "crown" created in front of the slider body because of the pad lock holes. This creates a fulcrum and the pull tab does not go past 45 degrees or so instead of parallel to the zipper, which causes the zipper to make an S as you open and it doesn't work as efficiently. Makes it finicky to open, but is fine once you figure it out and open it carefully.

No frills, just a bottomless pit for gear and clothing. If you use packing cubes, you can easily cram 2 weeks' worth of clothing in here with space left over. And the end compartment is great for manky shoes, wet stuff or dirty, smelly items. But the BEST feature in my opinion is that, unless you've packed it to the gills/maybe even HAVE packed it to the gills, you can indeed carry it onboard the plane. Because it's a duffel, you can shove it into the overhead compartment and it will conform to the curved interior easily. Upon landing, I clip a single generic strap (bought online) diagonally, to carry through the airport; since I am usually also carrying my BD Creek 35 as a backpack.
I use this bag every day for carrying a lot of clothes/food/general supplies to and from hospital visiting my son.Overall this is a great bag, it's very well made. I have filled it to the absolute maximum with some very heavy stuff and walked with it okay as a backpack, it was a bit too heavy to carry fully loaded by the carry handles. This leads me to the reason I only gave 4 stars instead of 5: I had to buy an over shoulder strap to allow me to wear as a cross body or shoulder. This is now very comfortable to wear when at maximum capacity and can be carried for long periods of time.I bought a non branded shoulder strap online with two carabiner clips and attached it to the bag as a permanent fixture. This bag is hardy and sleek. The material feels and looks great. Hands down my best duffel bag. The only flaw I note is that it lacks the long shoulder strap going down the middle. You can use one of the backpack strap as a shoulder strap, but it feels awkward when carrying it horizontally like a typical duffle. A simple solution for Northface would be to add two strap clips down the middle of the bag (in between the two back-pack straps), that way the bag would become even more versatile. Carrying it as a backpack feels great and is also really convenient. The product is amazing, it just lacks an essential duffle-bag feature. With that said, I still give it 5 stars, I like it that much.
I ordered the small online direct from NorthFace. It's definitely not small. For me the bag is too large (I'm 5'4") and very uncomfortable when I carry it in backpack mode. No matter how I adjust it, how much and how I pack the load, it hurts after only a short walk. The zip is also very stiff and difficult to operate. All that said, it is tough, and I. Sure would survive even the most destructive airline checkin.Probably good for a larger person, just not good for me. I'd swap it for the XS but have used it, and not sure of returns policy.
These North Face Base Camp Duffels are tops when it comes to durability. I bought two-- the medium and the small. I previously had two Patagonia Black Hole Duffels of the same size equivalents. I prefer the Base Camp's tougher fabric and neutral earth tones over Patagonia's gaudy bright-colored fabrics with a plastic-like coating. The Base Camp feels like it's made from the material they make river rafts out of. I haven't scratched or scuffed one yet, and I've tried!I'm deducting two stars, though, because the zippers are hard to work. They keep catching and jamming up instead of gliding smoothly-- and no, there is no fabric is caught in them. Also, the AVIATOR NAVY is **NOT** BLUE!!! They keep catching and jamming up instead of gliding smoothly-- and no, there is no fabric is caught in them. Also, the AVIATOR NAVY is **NOT** BLUE!!! I realize that there is a degree of color distortion on computer screens, but these duffels don't even resemble blue. At first I thought they had mistakenly sent me the wrong color, but the tags on the bags confirmed that this was indeed the color I had ordered. Under normal indoor lighting and out in sunlight, Aviator "Navy" is a dark charcoal gray. I actually called North Face and complained about this. If they want to sell this color, fine, but please describe it accurately. I asked the customer service rep how they managed to make the photos of this color look blue? She said they shoot their pictures with powerful spotlights. So be forewarned that if you choose the Aviator Navy hoping to get dark navy blue, you're in for a disappointment, unless you can store the duffel under a spotlight. North Face did reimburse me 10% of my purchase price for this disappointment.
Rock solid. Burly, immortal zippers. Comfortable shoulder straps in backpack mode -- I've carried these for hours comfortably (use the compression straps to reduce volume if you don't fill it). Hand holds are positioned correctly on the sides to balance your duffel-style carry perfectly and aren't poking you in the back like the original style of decades past. And this is absolutely bulletproof. For many, the base Camp Duffel will last decades. There's a reason you see this bag tied to yaks headed to Everest Base Camp far more often than the competitors. I read the handful of one-star reviews and just shake my head -- I don't know what those people are talking about. There's no competitor that beats it, at any price.
A reliable packhorse is how I'd describe this. I bought the TNF red colour and the material felt - and has proved to be - super durable for regular outdoor weekends away hiking and camping. This wasn't my day-bag for hiking, but absolutely comfortable enough to carry on my back in rucksack mode despite being packed full to get to bases for us to set up tents. I was inspired to purchase because a friend of mine has had his for years and it is still going strong. Worth the investment if you want a practical, good looking travel bag which will probably outlast me and you!
