I've had the same Borealis since early 2017. This backpack has been with me every day for half of undergrad, working full time, my master's degree, and now my doctorate. I've traveled all over the country with this backpack and have had it carry everything from heavy and dense to bulky and lightweight. Its design is beautiful and it's extremely spacious. The only wear it has from 7 years of consistent use is that some of the padding on the back has started to wear and the water bottle holders have started to rip. The straps fit perfectly, and the padding on the back is outstanding. I also love the sternum clip in the front. It's great for keeping your posture in check. My only two complaints - It's a little top heavy, and looks a little funny at the top when packed or unpacked, to the point where it never completely sits up straight which is a bit of an odd design flaw. Other than that, it looks sleek from the outside. Not really a huge fan of the water bottle holders on either side, I feel like they could improve those to be better, and the bungee system I could ultimately do without.Overall, I'd easily give it a 9/10, 4/5. This backpack is an amazing quality backpack for the price. I recommend.

For work/school use = Annoying Backpack
20 April 2024

I use this backpack for college. While the material quality and construction are very good, the design of the backpack is super annoying. Non-stop annoying. It's designed like a hiking backpack. As in, load up 50 lbs of gear in the morning, hike all day long, then unpack everything at night. So the pack is intentionally designed to create a high center of mass, close to your back. It tapers down the bottom. The external organizational pocket, which is too small, is located high up on the back. It has an complicated system of straps and elastic and cinch straps that are meant to pull the load tight together, pull it in towards your back, and keep it high. What this means is that the compartment you put your wallet, phone, pencils/pens, calculator, etc in flops ... MoreI use this backpack for college. It tapers down the bottom. The external organizational pocket, which is too small, is located high up on the back. It has an complicated system of straps and elastic and cinch straps that are meant to pull the load tight together, pull it in towards your back, and keep it high. What this means is that the compartment you put your wallet, phone, pencils/pens, calculator, etc in flops around all over the place (and again, it's too small). Then, if you put anything smaller than a book in the main compartment, it drops down to the bottom. Your access to the bottom of the main compartment, however, is pinched off by the bottom of the external org compartment, which is pulled in tight against the back w/ straps, elastic, etc. Basically, you have to fight against the backpack to get anything out of the bottom.Another annoying thing - the organizational compartment, being so high and being constrained at the bottom, is constantly flopping around when you're trying to get stuff out of it. It's like a triangle sitting up on one edge. It wants to tip forward, pivoting on the over-strapped bottom edge. If you're packing and unpacking once a day, this might not be an issue. But when you're constantly getting things out all day long (calculator, pens, phone, wallet, keys, watch, etc) it's very annoying. Then, because of the tapered bottom, the high weight distribution, and the flopping organizational compartment, it's easy for the COG to get out past the bottom edge of the bag, and the whole thing tips over.Bottom-line, this backpack is designed for all-day hiking, which results in a backpack that is very annoying as a school-work backpack. Choose accordingly.

From commute to weekend travel bag
19 September 2023

I use the bag for my daily commute, and as a bag for clothes etc for short trips. The bag has performed excellently. It fits multiple shirts, jeans, other clothing essentials, a compactly folded blazer, running shoes, sport shorts+shirt. It *also* fitted my laptop, tablet, and chargers, and it has the front pocket for pens, notebook, passport etc. So overall, it fitted everything that I would need for a short week away, while travelling light. It was *just* within the easyjet hand luggage limits (I tested it at the airport), but required some stuffing. If the bag was filled with glasses rather than clothes this would not have worked. Some reviews here negatively mention the front pocket of the bag. If the bag was filled with glasses rather than clothes this would not have worked. Some reviews here negatively mention the front pocket of the bag. It's true that this front pocket makes the bag top heavy. This gives the bag a tendency to fall over when there are a few things in the front pocket, and nothing in the rest of the bag. However, this design also has a *big* advantage, which is that you can put lots of things in the bottom of the bag. In other bags where the front "admin pocket" reaches down to the bottom, all the items in the pocket fall to the bottom, which makes it very difficult to stuff items in the bottom of the main space of the bag. With the current Borealis design, I can get my sports shoes all the way at the bottom, without it competing for space with notebooks in the admin pocket. I can stuff the bottom of the bag full of things that I won't need immediately. The top of the bag can then be filled with soft items (clothes) or be less tightly packed but filled with things that I need to hand more frequently (e.g chargers, which I usually pack last). So overall, the one downside I have seen mentioned here (the admin pocket making the bag top heavy), also has a *big* upside, which is that you can stuff the bottom of the bag full with many items.

Good Backpack for Juniors
13 August 2024

Bought this backpack at the beginning of freshman year of college. Functioned pretty well, honestly - had the space for all my textbooks and notebooks, laptop, laptop accessories, etc. and was pretty comfy to wear. Could even stuff my lab coat and goggles in for lab days, or take everything out and stuff in a change of clothes for spending a night at a relative or a friend's.Would be a simple 5-star review...if it wasn't the beginning of junior year and I'm waiting for the backpack to fail any day. Recommend to any school/work commuter with lots of stuff
13 March 2024

I've had this backpack for about a month now and it's holding up really well! I predominantly use it for commuting to and from work/school, while also using it for travel and short hikes.I really like the layout of the pockets: The laptop sleeve is the perfect size, and the cargo pockets inside the front compartment are just the right size for storing my pencils, cables, earphones, and calculator. The middle pocket is big and roomy for larger things like my raincoat, binoculars, etc. I also like the color choices a lot!At first, I thought the elastic system was ridiculous and that I'd never use it; but now I frequently use it for drying my raincoat or for latching my water bottle with a karabiner to keep it from falling out (not that that's necessary - the side ... MoreI've had this backpack for about a month now and it's holding up really well! For now, they seem much sturdier than those of backpacks I've had in the past. The only issues I have with the backpack are opportunities for improvement rather than detractors from its utility: The front-most padded zipper compartment is slightly too small to fit anything for me (I think it's meant to be a tablet compartment, but it's way too small for that). Also, if I don't have anything massive in the middle compartment, the stuff I have in the cargo pockets makes the pack top-heavy. But if you find some more stuff to put in the big compartment-or just don't have so many smaller items to keep organized-it's fine.

Shocked by quality!
15 September 2024

I've seen these bags my whole life but I always ignored them because I wanted to be different. I recently started college and I've been getting into the outdoors more so I finally decided I'd finally try the borealisout. Immediately I was blown away by how comfortable the bag is. When walking on campus you need a bag that has good support for heavy books. The borealis had room for all the books can support the weight and is still comfortable when full. I love that some pockets are lined with a soft material to keep electronics scratch free. The hydration pack/computer pocket feels extremely safe I don't worry about my Mac at all when it's in my bag. Now that I own the bag I can see exactly why they're so popular.

The best Backpack ever
20 August 2024

The Borealis backpack is simply incredible. I chose the Summit Gold/TNF Black - 1709 in³ (28 liters). Its yellow and black color is beautiful and this size allows me to carry everything I need in an ease and comfortable way. I searched for a long time and tested others that were unable to accommodate each of the items I consider important to have in my backpack in a practical and organized way. In addition to a separate and easily accessible space for my laptop, it has a large main compartment for different uses. But what won me over the most is that I can organize everything in small compartments located in the Front compartment, eliminating accessory bags that I needed to carry before this backpack. I can't forget the external fleece-lined pocket to store items ... MoreThe Borealis backpack is simply incredible. I chose the Summit Gold/TNF Black - 1709 in³ (28 liters). There are more than 10 types of color combinations - try it, you will love it as much as I do.

WAY BETTER THAN COTOPAXI OR COLUMBIA
7 August 2024

I use the product as a camp counselor. The organization pocket is PERFECT. It holds everything. The fleece lined pocket for sunglasses are a nice touch. I thought it didn't have much stuffing capacity in the second main pocket but then I noticed the expandable strap at the bottom of the bag and it was a beautiful surprise. The waiting buckle really helps with heavy loads. Also I love that the bag is water repellant! What an awesome surprise! The padding on the straps and back are so amazing. I also love the water bottle holders on the side. All the mesh ones don't secure my water bottle and now I can bend over and pick stuff up without worrying my water bottle will fall out. This bag checks all my boxes
