As a preface I commute to work via bicycle 5 days a week, 2.5 miles each way. I upgraded to this bag from a $25 day bag i had bought off amazon, and have been using it for about 2 weeks now, maybe points in my review will change as i break in the bag more. i have considered going back to using my old bag so ill start with negatives. The zippers do not open smoothly when trying to pull the pocket open with one hand, so you have to unzip each zipper deliberately. the arm straps are a concern: when pulling on the backpack the straps get stuck on my wrists, i pulled a little harder to get the straps to slide on and heard a popping like the stitching was ripping, when riding the straps bunch at the neck so to prevent chaffing i have to pull my shirt up to cover the area. ... I bought this bag to carry my daily fieldwork materials. When it arrived, my first thoughts were that it was big, that the smaller outer pocket was oddly an inverted triangle shaped, and that the shoulder straps were oddly an inch below the edge of the main bag. I filled it up with laptop, folders, lunch and my soft work project materials. My wallet, keys, pens, and critical small extras fit in the outer pocket. There was room for a water bottle in one pocket and a collapsible umbrella in the other. When I put it on it felt sturdy, the straps were comfortable over my single layer, the adjustable chest strap cinched in great and actually the lower strap position left the bag sitting higher on my back which felt anatomically quite comfortable. The fabric is durable (no scratches or stains) and the vented back makes it comfortable even to wear bike commuting. The only minor oddity of the bag is that it is top heavy and doesn’t sit upright by itself on the ground, but you get used to that so position it differently when putting it down. The only negative is that I cannot reach and pullout the water bottle while walking and wearing the pack, because the side pockets are taller and sit a bit high up, but I’ve gotten used to just taking off the bag to reach the bottles. The durability and comfortable fit are worth it! Overall, quite happy to wear it every day!

I've now taken this backpack on two trips, and really love it! The padded, cellular back and shoulder straps are really comfortable even when the pack is loaded. The front pocket only goes halfway down the bag, which took some getting used to. You can't put too much weight in it or the bag is very top-heavy. But I just made sure I put only light items in there and everything else in the main compartment. The side pockets are really useful for holding a water bottle and sunglasses case!

I bought this pack back to commute to work. Holds a laptop and a lunchbox no problem, and has a front zipper compartment which secures wallet and keys well. 2 side pockets for water bottles, holds my 32oz Nalgene bottle easily. Wish there was a middle zipper compartment to hold an extra notebook/computer charging cable, but overall a good bag for a day at the office.
I bought this online without seeing it in person.I ordered the blue and received a dusty rose colour (which isn't even listed as an option?). I actually like the dusty rose colour so didn't contact MEC for a return or anything...but it's not what I ordered. It also doesn't have a ton of pockets, which you can sort of tell from online, but in person you realize how limited it is. It has "space" though, so I'll just purchase some separate pouches for items to keep them separated. It does feel really well made and fits everything I need in it, which I wasn't sure of when I pulled it out of the bag. I also like that it stands up (sort of) on its own. If you have a ton of thick books I'm not sure it'd fit everything you need, but it fits a normal sized binder, my ... Very goos for university students, deep pockets, easy to store chargers, I can fit my 15.6 in Gaming laptop and my 11 in. tablet. Everything fits in very easily! The backpack is light and close to your back, so you dont experience any pain while transporting it (center of gravity close to you! I had a different backpack with the same amount of items in it, felt way heavier than this one!
I bought this on a whim during a sale for my commuter backpack and I have zero regrets! This pack is super supportive but not uncomfortable at all. And it is approved by the American Chiropractic Association, which was not advertised but should be! It has lots of room I the main compartment and the smaller compartment has lots of pockets for organizing. The mesh pockets on the outside easily and securely hold a 32oz water bottle. The fabric is durable and is water resistant long enough to get you to the bus or car in a surprise rain shower (as I found out the hard way!). The only thing missing is a hip belt so not sure how trailworthy it would be. It's sturdy enough it would likely be fine for short jaunts but maybe not a full day. I love the color and quality of ... I bought this pack for traveling with a family. I have large and small hiking packs and a couple of small daypacks but I wanted something in between. This fit the bill. It obviously is not meant for hiking so I would not consider it if that's what you need. But it is easy to adjust for comfort, has enough structure to stand itself up, the back is well padded and ventilated and the straps are wide so it won't cut into your shoulders when it is loaded with weight. That is an issue with some other daypacks. The front pocket is a decent size but there is no small 3rd stash pocket which would be one of my only complaints. The other thing to know is that the zippers are very fast and smooth. Which is usually a good thing except they can open a lot further than intended. ... The fabric seems durable and kept the interior dry in light but steady rain. It does have an integrated laptop / tablet pocket and for students this could probably last your entire college career. Overall a very good pack for the price.
I purchased the Recon backpack for my son for 7th grade. It lasted about 3 months, but then the strap completely tore off. Tried to get it repaired by North Face since they say they have a 1-year warranty. However, the fine print is North Face doesn't provided shipping nor do they provided return tracking numbers. Everything is based on printing a form and you may or may not get the item repaired. Bottom line is this backpack most likely won't last a year for anyone and North Face won't stand behind the product, so I don't recommend this one.
I bought this a month ago to replace a very worn down North Face backpack. My previous one had more functionality in that there were better pockets in my opinion, but it was my own fault for not looking more closely at the features of this pack. With that said, it is a great pack! Very sturdy design and zippers. Very long design which is somewhat strange for fitting things in. I place my laptop in that compartment and there's at least six inches of space above that. It has been useful for stuffing a jacket or my lunch bag on top of all my other things, but still kind of an unusual design. The water bottle pockets get their space by infringing on internal space, which is kind of a bummer, but the pockets are good for holding tall bottles as the mesh goes much higher ... The rest of that pocket is large but very thin.Overall, I think I will be much happier using this for day hikes (which was the secondary purpose for my purchase) than I have been with using it for school. It should last a long time though, so I'm excited about that.
