Probably the greatest RPG game of all time. The first game was based on the book series by Polish author Andrzeji Sapkowski. I do suggest you start playing now before the Netflix series is released. This game follows Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher (basically a bounty hunter for monsters). It has very realistic graphics of a medieval world, very impressive for its 2007 release date. The lighting changes from night to day and the weather changes drastically as well depending on where you travel. This entire game is based off of the players choices as Geralt, so you can be good, evil, or just neutral. It all depends on how you play the game. There are also consequences for your choices and what paths you chose to go down. Yet these consequences are not immediately ... MoreProbably the greatest RPG game of all time. Over the shoulder (OTS), and two top-down perspectives. I suggest using OTS it makes the boss fights easier, because it gives you faster reflex time.

I came to this game late in the game. I honestly hated it at first but since I like playing from the beginning I pushed through and ended up loving this game. It is a point and click game and very old school compared to games today. Still a classic and if you love any of the Witcher games start here from the start and get the whole story as your choices matter when playing the 2nd and 3rd games.

My first Witcher game and I was hooked. I spent hours playing this game, exploring the large world and side quests. I love the characters, world building and of course the DLC which were both very fun. It’s great seeing how different my friends played it.

An excellent intricate RPG
18 April 2012

I never played the pre-enhanced version or The Witcher 2 so I can only speak for the Enhanced edition and how it was after the likes of Skyrim. The Witcher came out in 2007 and the Enhanced edition in 2008 so I expected it to show its age a bit. It actually still looks really good and has a more classic western RPG feel than modern RPGs. There are multiple endings, lots of moral choices, different ways you can build the character with Magic, Sword skill and Alchemy. The main game takes 50-60 Hours to complete ignoring bonus content and you can easily play again and make different choices. There are a couple of things some people may be turned off by. The first is the combat which takes some getting used to and is pretty basic until you upgrade skills. There are 3 camera options and if you don't like any of them you may not enjoy the game. Personally I didn't mind the combat and liked the over-the-shoulder camera option. At this price if you are a traditional Western RPG fan its definitely worth your time.

Best RPG in recent years

Easily the cream of the RPG crop for its year. While it is not a classic with the stature of, say, Baldur's Gate 2, it is a very very strong game with essentially no flaws. It is routinely compared favourably to Mass Effect and Oblivion, and deserves to be considered in the same league as Fallout 3.The game features very good-looking graphics, a decent plotline, and a goodly length -- this will keep you busy for a while. One notable feature is that choices made early on have unpredictable long-term consequences for the rest of the game. The interface is clean and intuitive, the camera handling is unusually good and stable for an RPG, the levelling system is satisfactory, the acting is OK -- really, there are no weak spots. So this game has received a lot of ... MoreEasily the cream of the RPG crop for its year. The interface is clean and intuitive, the camera handling is unusually good and stable for an RPG, the levelling system is satisfactory, the acting is OK -- really, there are no weak spots. So this game has received a lot of praise (deservedly), but also a lot of flak from people who are just reluctant to like it. One reason for this is the mixed taste left in the mouth by the game's first edition, in which the original dialogue was disembowelled for the English-language version, and which had several technical flaws. The enhanced edition has solved pretty much every problem. The combat system is perhaps still too simple for some people's taste, but it's great for those who want to focus on the adventure. Some have still found themselves able to criticise the voice acting, but they're scraping the barrel: while maybe not Oscar-winning, the acting is perfectly tolerable -- infinitely better than, say, Oblivion.I won't say that you're missing out on the experience of a generation if you don't play this, but it's an excellent game nonetheless. You won't regret a cent that you spend on it.

Great visuals AND great gameplay!? YES

Fantastic game! I havent seen an RPG like this in a long long time. If ever actually, its hard to remember any. With a long series of point and click hack and slashers (diablo 2, sacred, dungeon siege, etc) this one has exceeded all of them. i believe this game is based on a best selling novel which because this game is so great im gonna have to read it.This is one of those VERY rare games that has both great graphics and great gameplay. The combat is well done in which you do click on your enemy to attack them but precisely timed clicks initiate combos for bonus damage and also you can switch between weapon types and also styles to kill different kinds of enemies. not to mention a great range of magical attacks and defences. Theres so much variety in this that i find it hard to focus on one. Theres tonnes of dialogue, i actually think every NPC talks which really adds to the atmosphere of the game.Theres really only one negative about this game that i care to mention and thats the leading screens. Going in and out of buildings and areas can be a real pain (especially if you forgot something and need to go back). My computer has 4gb or RAM and i still cant stand the loading screens. But this is about the only down side.Ive been playing it for about 35 - 40 hours and i think im about half way. So the game isnt anything short like those Fable RPGs. This is definately for hardcore rpg'ers or even fantasy fans, give the book a read and that will be even better!

At first glance here on the website it may not look like your cup of tea, which is what I thought. Then I checked out a few Youtube videos and I thought it looked interesting and at $24.95 it's no biggy if it's not that great. But guess what. Yeah I love this game!!It's a really well balanced game with a plentiful story that does not compromise combat, great graphics for it's time and if you have a good gaming pc like me the visuals are even better cranked right up using the Nvidia control panel overrides, also having a Creative X-fi Extreme Gamer sound card and above to make use of EAX technologies the audio effects are awesome. And for Windows Vista and 7 you'll need to download Creative alchemy to enable EAX under these operating systems. Now more about the ... MoreAt first glance here on the website it may not look like your cup of tea, which is what I thought. Then I checked out a few Youtube videos and I thought it looked interesting and at $24.95 it's no biggy if it's not that great. And for Windows Vista and 7 you'll need to download Creative alchemy to enable EAX under these operating systems. Now more about the game itself. You are Geralt Of Rivia, a Witcher, a slayer of monsters and protector of Humans who was injured badly in combat and suffers from amnesia. Because he suffers from amnesia Geralt must re-learn his combat skills, knowlege of herbs, potions and magic giving you the aspects of upgrading his abilities. The maps are quite big with plenty of quests and achievements and dialouge which aren't boring and cheesy. The dialouge segments are a pick a path type of story gameplay adding to the replay factor as there are crucial parts of the game in which what you choose to say will determin the way the story plays out. For example you will be forced to choose who's side you take either "The Scoie'tel" an army of elves and dwarves fighting for freedom, "The Order Of The Flaming Rose" or to remain neutral which is a Witchers decree. These 3 paths are the major factor in the replay value, but also you will find yourself doing things differently each time you play it.I'm on my second playthrough now. And I can tell you now it took a long time to finish the first round so you get more than your moneys worth.I'll leave it at that now.If your into RPG games just buy it, play it and if you like it then pre-order the Witcher 2. You can't go wrong.

The con is not the games but my own, I have been playing for over a year because I can't play often due to pain from a car accident, so you know the game has really got to be good to have kept me interested in playing it this long, especially since I have severe ADD/ADHD I have also purchased the comic book series that just started based on the game and am looking to pick up the books as well. This is also the only RPG I have ever really put any time into, I was playing Kingdoms of Amular but that was just to advanced for me but this is a great game for the entry level RPG gamer as well as those that have been playing for years as I know many people that have played this one and the second installment multiple times and have loved it each time. A truly brilliant RPG. A game with a very interesting and unique approach to non-linearity and player decision. The Witcher's world based on the novels of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski is incredibly alive, and the developers did a excellent job in maintaining the "spirit," of the books in the game. The in game characters are interesting and responsive to player decisions, and the visuals are simply beautiful. Much love in the detail and many interesting gameplay elements - and Easter eggs. As a RPG the game has everything, player impact, interesting and mature story, crafting, a very unique combat system and a fantastic adventure vibe. This edition is coming with player made mods in a pretty box, worth having on the shelf or as a gift.

What "Oblivion" could have been but wasn't.
31 October 2011

The Witcher is one of the greatest RPGs of all time. With a rich and innovative storyline based on an incredible amount of lore, The Witcher is one of the few games on the market where your choices really matter and affect game play down the line. The game play is unusual but fluid and intuitive, and lets you change both your combat style and your whole game style on the fly to suit your preferences. My only complaint with the whole game was that the loading screens get a little long towards the end, and that the primary love interests were ugly and annoying. Ah, well. Nobody's perfect!
