Thermarest - Compressible Pillow Cinch Green Mountain Regular

Ultra-soft and expandable, the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is ideally suited for travel and family camping. Fully compressed, the pillow takes up surprisingly little room in your car, pack, or luggage and fluffs up quickly to provide a comfortable headrest. An integrated cinch cord gives you the say in the firmness of the pillow. Two layers of upcycled foam that would otherwise go to waste provide a comfortable, even surface. The soft partially-recycled polyester comfort ensures next-to-skin comfort. When not in use, the pillow packs into itself for compact storage. Note: To optimize the initial loft of the Therm-a-Rest Pillow's compressible fill, it is advisable to fluff the pillow by running it in your dryer for 10 minutes before use. Storing the pillow in an uncompressed fashion when not in use will extend the life expectancy of the fill's loft. The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is available in your choice of size and color.

Comfy but impractical

I’ve been searching for a good backpacking pillow and wanted to try this out on a 10 day backpacking trip. I watched a couple great reviews of it and like an idiot trusted the reviewers recommendation. I got a size Regular since I tend to move around at night and didn’t think the Small would be big enough to keep my head on it (just due to my experience with smallish air pillows). This was my first time trying a pillow that wasn’t an air pillow.Well, the pillow itself is very comfy. I really enjoyed sleeping with it. This was my first time trying a pillow that wasn’t an air pillow.Well, the pillow itself is very comfy. I really enjoyed sleeping with it. I didn’t have it strapped down to my sleeping pad in any way but it still managed to mostly stay in place throughout the night, probably due to its size and the fabric covering offering more friction than your typical slippery air pillow fabrics. I think the stuffing helps cradle it to your head better than typical air pillows, helping to keep it in place. So I didn’t have to chase my pillow all night.. there was only one night where I woke up without it a couple times. Ideally though I’d want a pillow that straps to the pad so there’s very little opportunity for it to move around. The fabric feels soft, which is great when the side of the face is on it.The support it provides is so far the best I’ve experienced with backpacking trips. If you want it firmer you cinch it up more. Less firm, uncinch it and you can also sort of move the stuffing around so it’s less stuffed at the spot your head will be resting. But the stuffing doesn’t squish out on its own, you kinda have to make it do that, which is nice. And the stuffing is substantial enough that your head doesn’t just sink through it all.The Regular size worked really well as far as sleeping comfort. It really is like a normal pillow, and having that kind of comfort on the trail is amazing. The problem is that it is big, and heavy for a trail pillow. When backpacking, size and weight really matter. I value my sleep and am willing to carry extra for it, but after 10 nights on the trail with this I know I haven’t yet found “the one”. Yes, the pillow cinches and rolls into itself, making it smaller, but it is still huge even when rolled up! They don’t give the specs of its size when bundled up, so you just trust and assume that it’ll be smaller. But it only rolls into about 50% of its length, with no way to make the width shorter, and with the height increasing as it rolls up. It’s larger than my 4” insulated air pad when that is deflated and folded up. It is a huge piece of gear for what it is, if you’re intending to hike with it. It does not get as small as you’d hope it does. And you can’t force it to be smaller either, which you’d think you could do. Just squish it up, right? Nope. I tried a couple different compression and cinch straps to try to force squeeze it into something smaller so it would fit in my pack easier but that didnt work. It simply takes up a lot of room in a pack. If you’re going on longer trips where you have to carry more stuff, a pillow taking up so much space is unfortunate. Or if you’re trying to do the ultralight thing with a smaller liter pack for the weight savings, it’s just not going to fit easily. If you’re using a smaller pack, plan on putting this pillow in a dry bag and attaching it to the outside of your pack. You can get the size Small, but then I’d definitely want pad straps for it.The weight is also more than I’d like to carry over mountains. Yes, the site lists the weight, so no surprise there, but you can’t have both weight and size on the trail. I already carry more weight with the thicker air mattress and a heavier lay flat hammock so I can get better sleep.. all the extra ounces add up and you really feel it throughout the miles. There are too many competitors out there to resign yourself to the size and weight of this pillow. The most annoying thing was that I didn’t know how to roll up the pillow to make it smaller and compress on its own until I got signal at the top of a mountain several nights into the trip and was able to look up how to roll it on YouTube. (It arrived right before the trip so I didn’t have time to play with or research anything beforehand). Once you know how it seems obvious but I was trying all sorts of different things trying to get it somewhat compressed. I kept trying to fold it in different ways, and using the integrated cinch strings as tight as possible, while trying to utilize the loop & toggle that was clearly meant to assist it staying compressed. I’m surprised I didn’t break the cinches in my attempts. I didn’t even consider that it rolled up into itself by stuffing one end into the overlapped fabric. Even my hubby didn’t figure that out, so it’s not just me. The instructions/tags it came with and this site only shows the pillow being cinched, they don’t show how to roll it into itself. I shouldn’t have to watch YouTube reviews to know what to do? Not that it helped though - the manually tightened compression buckles I added did a better job “compressing” it. But still, it would’ve been nice to know how to compress it on its own.The other thing I was disappointed with was how easily it held stains and sweat stains. I do sponge baths every night before crawling into my shelter so I’m not sleeping in stink, and I use a sleeping bag liner to further keep stink off of my bag and pad (and pillow), but this thing somehow found a way to roll around in oil and hold stains. Which were quite visible.. And I have the darker grey/green one that was kept in a dry bag along with my sleeping bag and liner, so it wasn’t getting contaminated from my other gear. And because the cover is integrated in the pillow, you can’t remove the cover to clean it in a river. If you tried cleaning this pillow on the trail it’d just stay wet (at least the trail I was on anyway.. drying things is difficult on it). The pillow is too dense for it to dry with any ease. So I was stuck with stains until I got home and could wash the whole pillow. For backpacking trips you want either a pillow you can wash (like regular air pillows) or a cover that can be removed and washed. Since this thing is already heavy for a trail pillow, it’s highly unlikely I’d ever get a separate washable pillow cover for it, as that’d be even more weight and space. If you’re just doing car camping or only hiking a couple miles for a 1-night trip, where size and weight aren’t as important, or if you do luxurious stay-in-place camping, or otherwise want a travel pillow smaller than your pillow at home, then this pillow is awesome. But I do not recommend it for your average multi-night backpacking trips. Comfy, yes, practical, no.I will continue the search for the ideal pillow (one that marries weight, space, cost, durability, and comfort). This one is getting added to the pile of gear that rarely ever gets used. Just another $41 gone..

What can I say other than it’s a pillow. It’s a bit bulky for my like, and feels lumpy when I hold it in my hands. However, once I fluff it up after I unfold it, it doesn’t feel as lumpy! When I use it, it doesn’t feel lumpy either. The pull cord to adjust firmness is a nice touch, but I don’t notice much difference. I am a side sleeper and regularly use two pillows at home. This one doesn’t feel thick enough for me, so I had to ball up a jacket to use underneath. (I really think that’s a personal issue and not a pillow issue though!) My backpacking buddy bought this same pillow after she tried an inflatable pillow and much preferred this one!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

We’ve had one of these for 5 yrs that I always take with me yakpacking and sometimes backpacking. I decided to get another so me and my partner could both have one when we go in trips together. The problem is that the updated design doesn’t pack down nearly as small, despite being the same size pillow as the older one. You can no longer cinch it down once it’s packed into its flap. There’s now just an elastic loop and bar that holds it together, but it doesn’t compress it. So even if this thing loses some loft as it ages, it will still be able to fluff up to fit the dimensions this passive closure allows, and it’s a much larger set of dimensions then the older design. Space is everything on the trips I intend to use it on. The cost (in terms of space occupied) of taking a pillow like this has always been a little steep, but for the comfort I decided it was a luxury I could afford. With the redesign and loss of cinching when stowed, that cost has risen and it’s no longer worth the space it occupies. You could use it for car camping, but then why not just bring an actual pillow which is way cheaper and more comfortable? So I’m not really sure what niche this pillow fits anymore, but it's been redesigned out of utility for the purpose it used to (marginally) serve. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But that’s exactly what thermarest has done.

Inconsistent Quality Control and Poor Customer Service
28 July 2024

I try to buy Made in the USA when I can and this led me to purchasing this pillow. These pillows are good when they have the correct amount of fill and firmness. I bought one of these pillows and I found it to be very good. I bought a second one and it had about 2 oz less fill and was not as firm. I exchanged it for another one and the third one was even less firm. I contacted customer service about the issue and they claimed this was within their allowances and my concerns about the product were ignored. I returned the item over 2 weeks ago and I am still waiting for a refund. If you are lucky enough to get a properly filled pillow they are very nice, but not worth the hassle as most of them seem to not be.

Love this pillow!
29 August 2024

Decided to try this pillow out after reading the reviews and researching other brands. I didn’t want to spend too much right now as I’m new to camping and not backpacking. So I didn’t need an inflatable pillow at a higher cost. What I like is the large size is perfect for me and it’s very comfortable. I have used this several times now and each night I sleep great with this pillow. The material is soft and easy to fold up for traveling. I love the fun mushroom design and the colors are vibrant. I’m glad I went with this pillow and the size large. I usually like a flatter pillow so I don’t have a stiff neck. This was a great choice and had no issues. It was perfect and definitely recommend!

Love this pillow. So happy

Love this pillow. So happy I got it. I didn't think it would matter but this pillow has made a big difference in my quality of sleep compared to a stuff sack full of clothes. I will always have a pillow now. The fabric is soft and the pillow is just the right loft for me. I do like the thinner pillows, being a petite person. Washing the pillow made a significant increase in the loft. This pillow easily fits in my compression sac with my sleeping bag and liner.

New go-to for travel and camping
2 June 2024

As someone who gets migraines without a proper sleep, a good pillow is a non-negotiable in terms of camping. I ordered a Large-sized Therm-a-Rest compressible pillow, and was so surprised with how comfortable and soft it was while being able to pack down so small. Although not as small as some other travel pillows, the fact that I can now travel with what is essentially a queen-sized pillow that can still fit in my backpack or attach to the outside of my bag is a major plus. I like that I can adjust the firmness by cinching the strap, and the real magic happens if you're able to throw it in the dryer for a few minutes. You'd never know that it was a camping pillow!Comfort: 5/5Ease of Use: 5/5

5 April 2024

I love the Thermarest pillows. HOWEVER, these new ones are super ugly and unappealing. Not all campers are interested in mushrooms. I hope they have some nice pretty schemes coming out in their next launch.I have an older model when the edges were still pointy. I have been able to wash them and put them in the dryer and they are just like knew. The color schemes and patterns were much more palatable. As a suggestion, please consider nicer star versions, perhaps some hazy mix of pink purple and blue to be like a soft unicorn color, some pastels. Just wish that at least there was a 50-50 split of pillow color scheme representation. Some girly soft and cleaner colors, and then whatever else they like to print. Hoping this gets seen.

bulky, comfortable option.

This is a bulky, very “real pillow like“ pillow. Takes up a lot of space in my pack, but I really enjoy it. Drawing In the cord compresses the pillow and makes a smaller surface area to sleep in but bulks the pillow up - making it taller. Great for side sleepers or any sleeper really.Using the Pillow in its flattened, fully extended position is too flat for me. I’d need two. Which I’ll be getting an additional. Definitely recommend. Heavy and bulky but after backpacking for a long day having some great head support is going to be worth it.I also purchased the Nemo elite as another reviewer has. I find it comfortable however, I don’t enjoy the air portion of air pillows. Unnatural and something to get used to, for the backcountry. It would work though. This, the Pillow is going to be pretty similar to the pillows you have at home, that similarity is going to be familiar to you on the trail. This is also going to be awesome for long car drives, supporting elbows, head and back on long trips. Also important I’ve just noticed after two days of being uncompressed it has fluffed up quite a bit, regaining a lot of loft.
