Bomb Proof Mild Weather Mat

I got this for ground sleeping in mild to cool weather when not using a hammock. Be aware of your needs as much will depend on whether you may want something different. Pros: Light weight, puncture proof(won't deflate), ok R factor for mild weather (I add this under a light weight air pad for more R factor and can even wrap it with a survival type wrap to reflect heat as needed. But this is not really a cold weather mat so be aware), quick to deploy, good price. Cons: Bulky to cary on pack, not particularly comfortable on the hard ground, but then it's not designed to be a nice plush mattress. My goal was to get something that would not deflate and would offer best R rating for this kind of mat for use in an emergency. I love these old school RidgeRest Classic's. I keep them in my cars, and my shed, and around the house. Any time I have to get down on my knees or look under my car or exercise on the floor / ground. They do the trick. My only disappointment is that they were only offered in the largest size when I purchased recently. For my purposes, the old medium size was perfect. I plan to cut these down but I just haven't gotten around to it.

I've had the same one for over 20 years.

This is my FAVORITE camping pad for backpacking. I like how I can't pop it and how it isn't slippery and how it's warm and has enough padding for backpacking. I got mine over 20 years ago & used it literally every night for years. I've also used various self-inflating mattresses which don't last long and are very slippery. I like how you can toss this pad in a briar patch or a blueberry patch or any pokey thicket and have an instant comfy place to sit. Admittedly, mine's full of holes, but it's just as comfy. I also cut the ends off one desperate day on a long dirt road in the middle of a desert when the tire on my bike trailer was so thin that it offered zero protection to the tube within. I stuffed the worn out tire with the ends of the Thermarest— no easy task— ... MoreThis is my FAVORITE camping pad for backpacking. Now that I'm an old lady & I'm just car camping, I use a three-inch foam pad, but that's just not feasible for backpacking.

Indispensable !!!

I have 2 Ridgerest pads.I use one as extra comfort on top of my yoga mat. Purchased 10 yrs agoCan't live without it!!!!!Use it daily. Pure pleasure.I use the 2nd one, purchased 2 yrs. ago, for comfort, lying on the stone deck of an outdoor pool in the summer. I do not allow it to get wet.I also use one as cushioning to do ankle/leg balance exercises for rehab after a broken ankle. One constructive criticism, the first mat, bought 10 years ago, is shorter than the newer mat. I much prefer the shorter one.Fabulous investment. Joy in my life.

Kept me warm & protected!
13 June 2020

I layered this under my therm-a-rest self-inflating mattress and though probably not required, definitely added a nice layer of warmth and added support. Temperatures went down to a damp 5c while camping by a lake with a little rain and I slept very well.Because of its rigidity and design, you’ll feel no rocks through it.The only thing I don’t like about this is that as the foam is quite rigid, it really can’t be rolled up small or compressed at all. The smallest rolled diameter I could get it to was almost 12 inches and so no way to loop it onto my Osprey pack. It wasn’t marketed as such so that’s fine, and if camping with car access, great, but not something I’d recommend bringing if hiking to camp. Also not a pad to sleep or relax on without a mattress on top ... MoreI layered this under my therm-a-rest self-inflating mattress and though probably not required, definitely added a nice layer of warmth and added support. Also not a pad to sleep or relax on without a mattress on top as it is quite textured. I imagine breathable though because of the texture, just not very comfy to lay on.

Multiple uses, indestructable
24 August 2021

I've had four or five or ridgerests over my lifetime of extensive camping trips including three expectations of over a month each into Canadian wilderness. Not only does it provide a comfortable and warm sleeping pad, but it can be used for many many other purposes. For instance in the bottom of your canoe to keep your pets, gear off a cold wet bottom or off a hot boat. In emergency it can be used to splint and protect an injured limb. My cat likes to sharpen her claws on it. You can use it for any type of cushioning purposes. I use it for walkways in the tent, helping keep the floor clean. If it gets wet you can just wipe it off, it will be dry in minutes. It will never mold or deflate.

One of the best for what it is.
16 May 2024

I use it under my inflatable sleeping pad or throw it down for the dogs. Not much to say about these type of foam mats since there is nothing fancy going on here but out of the options this is one of the best. its taken a beating and still going. Ive used it as a sleeping pad, dog mat, rolled up and used as a seat cushion on rocks, a pillow, vestibule door mat and tent footprint on a 1 man tent, if i was a little lighter id try it as a raft.

Perfect multi-use pads!!
7 November 2024

These original RidgeRest Classic Sleeping Pads are very handy to have around. I use them all the time at home, inside and outside, and on the road, as exercise pads, and when working on my knees, or on my back working under my cars. Very durable. Excellent product. PLEASE RESUME SELLING THE SMALL SIZE!!! My oldest pads (see photos) 20" x 49" black on one side grey on the other are just perfect for my usage.

This is my second pad,
7 November 2024

This is my second pad, my first is still in the mix after many thousand miles ,but more importantly countless short day hikes which turned into overnighters. I own at least three or four of the latest and greatest mattress pads but as I pack for for my next trek I always grab my pad. I know what to expect and have confidence that I will get a good nights sleep. Since I have been hiking I never used anything but my pad, not counting the old insulate pad from days gone bye.

[Rewarded Review] Back to Tried & Tested

Over the years and after trying all different types of camping pads, we decided to go bak to our tried & tested Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest Classic close cell sleeping pads because, they simply rock. While self-inflating air pads are more comfortable, they lack in durability and have the tendency to let you down when you need them the most.
