I purchased this Helium Thule based on good experiences with other Thule products.A year later, I have to agree with other reviewers--this is poor quality and poor quality control. I had to partially disassemble the rack before I could even use it. Trying to contact Thule was a waste of time. One of the pieces was assembled backwards in the factory. When I figured this out, I could then finish attaching one of the wheel trays. A year later, one of the ratcheting arms that holds the front wheel down is stuck with it's button depressed. Won't lock down & hold wheel properly. Buy something else.

Two of the arms do not work so I can only mount one bike at a time. I have had this rack for only a few months. Also yesterday WHILE driving after 50 miles the rack folded down. Fortunately my brand new PIVOT mountain bike was not damaged. It did not hit the pavement. I have tried for months to get help from Thule regarding the arms that don’t work but they do not answer me. Yesterday was the last straw. I do not dare use the rack any longer. We think dirt gets into the arms preventing them from opening. (We think). There is no way to clean out the dirt if this is the cause. Expensive back rack that will sadly go to a landfill. I wouldn’t give this away.

I ordered this on a Friday and received it the following Wednesday. The rack was relatively easy to put together. You don’t need any tools except the Allen wrench that is provided for you. Once you get all of the inner boxes unpacked, all you need to do is put in and tighten bolts and then slip in the locks with the included blank key. The way to tighten the rack onto the hitch makes it very stable without any rocking back and forth like my previous rack. The bikes sit in the trays and very securely with the ratcheting arm that only makes contact with the tires. I’m older and can lift and put the rack on the car easily by myself. Getting the bikes off is just as easy by pulling the release lever and lowering the arms. The rack is solidly built. This rack does block the license plate on the car when in the folded position. Be sure to consider what you need to do regarding ensuring that your plate is not obscured when traveling. When purchased on sale, the rack isn’t any more expensive than other Thule or competitor racks at their regular price. I’m happy with the purchase and Moosejaw!

3 out of the 4 wheel trays on this rack no longer work. No matter how hard I press their grey release handle, nothing. The arms stay folded, rendering this rack useless. The wheel trays are all press fitted plastic, with no way to take apart to lubricate the cable. A new replacement wheel tray is $300!! Do not buy this rack, nothing but dissatisfaction and disappointment.
Just about perfect for me. I only needed one slot for a bicycle, and this is perfect. The rack is relatively light in weight, relatively but not completely easy to attach to my car hitch, and seems quite stable when driving. Two things. First, I wonder if it's necessary to lock the rack, although the manual says it should be locked (to prevent theft?). Second, there is a bit of sway in the rack while driving, but so far it seems okay.
I have had problems ever since I got the rack. The arms seize on a regular basis. Thule have replaced one of the arms under warranty but then another arm started to seize. Thule replaced the rack with a new one but the new rack is not level. Thule has agreed to send a new part to hopefully fix this problem. I would not recommend this bike rack. Thule and Rack Attach have both been great in resolving the problems but the rack itself is not recommended.
For the most, part this has been a great bike rack. Installation into the hitch is easy and secure. Bikes are held solidly in position with minimal vibration evident. The cable lock system however is awkward especially when locking/unlocking. Regardless, I am satisfied with this product.
This is a well designed rack, but I am now on my second defective Thule rack. Thule packed the wrong right-side wheel platforms and they could not be attached. This necessitated a phone call to Thule who said they could ship out parts in a week or I could drive back to REI and exchange it. This cost me several hours and lots of frustration. I expected more from a premium brand. I exchanged the item, then installed it, and now the handle that raises and lowers the rack is stuck and cannot be squeezed. Thule really needs to get its act together. That have cost me a day of my day and one glorious bike ride. For a premium brand, they should be ashamed. My cheapo Swagman rack from Amazon at least came with the right parts and worked as advertised.
I purchased this rack because it looks great and the concept of having a rack that is lightweight and secures your bikes while never touching the frame is appealing. That’s where the Pros end. I have had to return two of these racks for functionality issues. One which I could have lost my bike due to the cheap plastic rivet strips and the second one wouldn’t release from the hitch for storage due to a poor wedge system. I really really wanted this rack to work out which is why I gave it two tries. I’m extremely thankful though for REI and their customer service making it easy to return and exchange it twice in one year but I do lose my dividend. I ended up with a Kuat NV 2.O, so far so good.
Im so-so on this. Super easy to install but there are some things to consider. If you get a flat and do not have a spare then mount will press up on the rims. So might consider some sort of protection if you do run into this situation (which I have). Also the bike in the easy access tailgate position is still not enough for my 2021 Yukon to open up the gate without excessive pulling down on the handlebars to allow clearance fora road bike (even with the road bike off centered on the rack) . Also dirt gets in the ribbed plastic fasteners, so be careful when tightening up the levers (do yourself a favor and wipe them off before you tighten up the tire mounts)..Definitely Light though, and we love that. we like how it can fit in 1.5 to 2" receivers, but for us it was ... MoreIm so-so on this. Once in a while we forget to pull the bike away from the tailgate, and it does scuff the handlebar tape and rear lift gate...
