The 2-bike rack is excellent but the add on is a disaster. I tried every possible way to attach the handle so that I could tilt the rack up, but like many, many other reviewers, I could not get the hidden screw to line up with the hole. So now whenever I need to transport more than 2 bikes, I have to leave the rack in the down position. I was able to remove the add-on after much difficulty but then re-installing the handle on the 2-bike rack was a nightmare for the same reason - getting the hidden screw to line up with the hole. If I had to do it over again, I would just buy a 4 bike rack and a 2 bike rack and change them out. But I already wasted $500+ on this awful add on. I wish I had returned the whole thing to REI when I had the chance. Save yourself the frustration and choose a different bike rack.

You need to know that this is not a modular system that will allow you to go back and forth between a 2 bike and 4 bike rack. Once assembled, it will remain exclusively a 4 bike set up. Installation was crazy frustrating. Very unclear instructions. Had to put together and take apart several times to get everything to line up and work. I now have a $1100+ bike rack that is virtually unusable unless I get someone to help me mount it to my car sine it weighs about 80-90 pounds. Just moving it around the garage is a nightmare. The newer XT Pro has integrated wheels for easy maneuverability which is great, but they don't offer a retrofit solution for the previous generation. This scenario is not what I expected at all. They essentially told me I was on my own and to reach out to a local bike shop for ideas of how to move this thing around and store it and deal with it in general. They followed up with an email survey, I used the opportunity to express my dissatisfaction with the product and lack of help from the Thule representative...no response. This is just adding insult to injury. Don't send me a survey if you are not going to read it and respond when appropriate. I have been a big Thule fan for many years, but this experience has me looking to the competition. Doesn't matter how good the product is if the company is unresponsive and unwilling to help find solutions.

Finally, for the mechanism that attaches to the handle, there are 2 blind screws inside deep holes, you have to stick your allen wrench in there and pray for screw engagement, there is no way to see anything. You can't back out the screw at all. That step alone took 30 minutes of jiggling, banging, cursing, etc, in order to get the screws to magically line up with their threaded holes. The worst part? If you fail at this step of installing the add-on kit, you won't be able to use the original bike rack anymore either because you have already detached these screws, and the mechanism won't work anymore. My recommendation is to get this installed at a professional bike shop where they do the hard work for you. Only get this if you absolutely need 4 bikes on your already-owned T2 Pro XT.

I purchased the add-on after directly asking Thule if it is possible to remove the add-on and only install when needed (as we only need this a few times a year when the whole family goes on a trip) and was assured this would be no problem. When I received the add-on, it was first assembled wrong by Thule which I realized after HOURS of frustration trying to assemble to my bike rack. There was no way to connect the 2 racks together properly with the incorrect assembly by Thule. I had to cutout a portion of the connecting bar assembly that should have been retained by a rivet. Once I got past that, I needed a mallet to assemble the two pieces together. There is no way to take it apart by hand. I had to use my car jack and press the pieces apart (due to not being able to assemble per the above problem). Thule, I know you want the tolerances tight so that nothing moves/rattles but I would not tell anyone it could be removed and re-assembled.Once assembled however, daily function of the rack is great. It is perfect for our use except that we are stuck with using the 4 bike rack all the time.
This was an extremely frustrating assembly. The instructions are only pictograms and are not detailed. It is very hard to determine what to do at several of the steps. Had to watch several videos to find out. The parts bag was completely sealed but was missing bolts and washers. The pieces did not fit well together and took some coaxing to join. The bolt holes were not lined up well and I had to play with it to start the bolts. Called customer service about the parts and was directed to go to website to fill out a warranty form. Started to ask some more questions but realized I was hung up on. Heavy Indian accent on the support line.Definitely do not recommend this bike rack. Have serious reservations about recommending Thule at all.
Yes, the instructions suck but this isn’t about the instructions. Watched a video on YouTube and only took me 15 min to unbox and install. Very solid construction and love it accommodates road to fat tire. It takes some strength to disengage the lock when it’s up or loaded but also means it’s not going to bounce unlocked. Most of the difficulty is associated with the height. I’m the up position handle is about level with the top of my Grand Cherokee. While I’ll leave the carrier on my car in the 2 bike setup, I take this off if it’s not going to be used for a few days. After install, this keeps bikes locked down tight and I have zero concerns about safety or function.
Just purchased this extension and the XTR rack as one purchase. The rack and extension are high quality. However, a fail by Thule is when ordering together, they ship the extension and the main rack with different locks/keys. So, after spending a lot of money, Thule's solution is for me to buy a new lock/cylinder for like $70. If ordering the two together, Thule should match the locks for delivery.
I have the Thule T2 Pro XT 2 rack and purchased this add-on. Functionally it works well and is solid although a bit heavy. However, when I installed the Thule T2 Pro XT Add-On it was nearly impossible and at one point I thought I would be in big trouble since the add on piece opening was slightly larger than the existing 2 rack. I had to pound it in with a mallet until it went in. However, when you go online and watch some Youtube videos some people's add on pieces slip in with no issues. On the flip side, as you can see from the poor reviews here people have the exact same problem that I have. In addition the holes do not line up at all so I have to install screws at an angle. I have to use this as a 4 rack and that is not what I signed up for. For the amount of money I paid, I expect much more. Thule Customer service is extremely slow at getting back to me so I hope someone reads this and gets back to me asap. This needs to be rectified.
Was hesitant due to the other reviews and almost didn't buy the Thule T2 bike rack at all. I am very happy that I went with the Thule rack and like the option carrying 4 bikes. Assembly was on par of base rack so if you assembled that you should find the add-on to be similar difficulty. I read that some people had problems with a tight fit making it difficult to remove from the base (I was prepared to lubricate the fitting as I read as recommended in another review), however this was not required as the fitting was not too tight. The kit did have a new handle in case your original handle does not fit (apparently some Thule T2 Pros were shipped with defective handles that do not fit the add-on). For most of the time I will be using the bike rack in a 2 bike configuration but will be nice to carry four bikes as needed and when our kids learn to ride and have bikes.Pros:Very sturdy, well builtKit now has a replacement handle (if needed)Assembly simple-ish, on par with base rackEasy to transport bikes including ebikesCons:Heavy (however the wheels on the base rack make it possible to move by myself but a second person is helpful)
The extension works as advertised. I was a little nervous about the install based on some of the other reviews detailing how cumbersome and challenging it was for them. I did not have the same experience and was able to install the extension in about 30 minutes. Unlike some of the other reviews, the holes on my extension lined up perfectly with the rest of the rack. I installed all of the components without even lowering the rack. I was able to keep it in its upright position and installed all of the pieces with ease. It now works just as easily with four trays as it did with two. Obviously it's significantly larger, and heavier with the two additional bike trays, but that's a given. I would not hesitate to recommend this to bike extension based on my experience.
