A Decent Seat with Three Critical Flaws

I stopped to investigate and I discovered that my son had freed his arms and upper body from the harness and that this "pecking" was from the visor of his helmet as his upper body flopped around in the seat. I'll admit, he's an escape artist, but his efforts to "David Blaine" his way to freedom would most likely be thwarted if the harness included a sternum strap.2. The clamp mechanism that affixes the seat to my pannier rack is finicky and, I feel, it is the most likely part of the rack to malfunction or break. The clamp tightens along two plastic threaded rods. It tightens to the rack with ease, but releasing it is onerous. As per the instructions, I press the key-lock button and turn the knob to release the clamp; however, for our product, it requires some unnecessarily forcible coaxing to get the clamp to engage the threads and loosen. If a part was to break during our time with this product, I am almost certain this would be the one. It is a design or materials selection flaw or both.3. The last issue is very concerning. It has to do with the guard panel that sits medial/inside my son's legs and protects him from the spinning rear wheel and from splashes of mud and water. This panel flares outward from the midline of the bike and, coincidentally, lines up perfectly with my foot on the pedal. When riding my heel will often strike the panel and, in the worst instances, will knock my foot off the pedal. I have strong bike handling skills, but depending on the circumstances unexpectedly knocking my heel off the pedal can, at best, be an inconvenience and, at worst, outright dangerous. I've thought about taping the edges of the panels together or poking a hole through the panel to zap-strap them to bring them out of the line of my heels on the pedals. Both solutions would work, but I'm left wondering why I should have to make aftermarket modifications to make the product safe to use. This should have been anticipated during the design and prototyping phase of developing this product. For reference, I use the seat on a typical commuter-style road bike with a standard-length pannier rack. I clamp the seat in the back third of the rack; however, I still get heel strikes.Overall, this is a decent bike seat that, aside from these issues, would be an excellent one. With a few aftermarket modifications, I can eliminate some of the issues I've experienced, but this raises the question of how these issues were missed and why the product entered production with these issues unresolved. My previously unwavering confidence in Thule products has faltered.

I love the bike seat, the rack for above your tire under your child seat is imperative! Otherwise, any little bumps you hit the seat WILL hit your tire. My biggest woe about getting this seat was that they did not include the adaptor, they included the key(s) for it but never the adaptor so I ended up having to buy the adaptor separately, after having no luck with their customer service line, despite the man being very friendly, nor did writing in an inquiry about the warranty. That was a huge disappointment because I install the seat & I had already waited 2-3 months for it’s arrival. So the seat is amazing but just don’t be surprised if they don’t send all the parts, thankfully, I was able to acquire it. May have better luck going through Amazon, they may handle ... MoreI love the bike seat, the rack for above your tire under your child seat is imperative! But the product itself it’s awesome I have a Trek mountain bike & she falls asleep on rides, with the proper rack, bumps won’t be an issue, & it’s super safe. She’s 3 years old & 20-30lbs.

Could have been a great product
20 June 2022

I have been using this seat for a year now, the overall design and look is nice, but there are some issues:1) It has no adapters for small or non-standard frame sizes, but it did fit my old 26" wheels 18" size frame with no issues. I could not mount it to one of my 28" wheels comfort bike2) Black side panels are too wide and may interfere with your feet when pedaling3) This is where I got disappointed the most, instruction says to torque bolts to 5 Nm, this crushed my frame tube and damaged the bike (used torque wrench).4) Seat has too hard padding5) It is good that the belts are 5-point mount, however upper portion of the belts on the shoulders seems to slip a little bit and need to watch out for that.

Defective—Known Issue with No Known Solution
10 September 2022

The knob on the back that is used to tighten or loosen the device gets stuck and you cannot turn it—doesn’t matter if it’s locked or unlocked. Once this happens the device is 100% useless. This is a known issue, there are multiple reports on the internet but nobody has a solution. This is unacceptable for a device that costs so much money. I would not recommend that anyone waste their money on this model until Thule holds itself accountable for the design flaw, offers a solution to existing customers and releases an update. Zero stars

Great Child Seat
17 July 2022

We bought the Yep Nexxt Maxi a couple months ago for my two year old daughter. She absolutely loves it. The construction is solid and the frame mounting provides a good amount of shock absorption. I really like it too. Unlike the front mounted seat we have before, it has no impact on my riding style and does not interfere with stopping and starting when riding in traffic. The harness is great, but you have to make sure you get it tight around the legs before snugging around the shoulders, or the shoulders can become loose as the webbing around the legs tightens. The foot holders are fantastic. They hold tight during the ride and prevent errant kicking and are east to secure and remove.

Great product
31 December 2022

I’ve been buying Thule products for years and have come to expect great things from them. These seats live up to my expectations of Thule. I bought two seats, one frame mount and one rack mount. We carry a 3 year old (30 lb) and one year old (20 lb) with total confidence. Easy to adjust quickly for different size children and they are always secure and comfortable. I highly recommended this seat for carrying any child below the weight limit.

Great seat, except for the strap system.
18 October 2021

I bought this a couple of months ago so I could use my cycle commute for the daycare run. My son says it's comfortable and enjoys the great lines of site the seat provides (that's the compromise between a seat with head support - often ruins the view to the side). The rack based installation is pretty quick and secure. However, the crank to adjust the clamp feels flimsy - I'm not confident it will last very long - you need to screw pretty tight to keep the clamp from sliding forward on the rack. I am going to try with the bespoke Thule rack and see if the clamp is more secure. So -1 star so far.The biggest downside so far is that the five-point harness does not include a sternum strap or clip, e.g., the fastener across the chest (like car seats have) that keeps ... MoreI bought this a couple of months ago so I could use my cycle commute for the daycare run. Recommend without hesitation

Great rear rack mount child bike seat. Fits on a standard bike rack without any adaptors required. Super lightweight. Easy to get toddler in and out of. She seems comfortable, though won't fall asleep, which is what I wanted. Definitely a tight fit if you wanted to wear a backpack with a passenger. Panniers not recommended to use while seat is on. Good leg guards so not chance of fingers/legs going in wheels. Easy to adjust and install. Only thing that looks like it might wear sooner is the foot strap holes that secure it in place-harder plastic, but reusing the same spot a couple times daily, can start to see a bit of wear on the holes already, though no integral damage yet. So much more convenient than a chariot trailer, just clip in and go!

Stylish, lightweight, comfortable seat.

This is a great bike seat for toddlers, it feels very sturdy, is comfortable, and is also lightweight. The harness is very nice and safe, as well as very easy to use.The downsides are that the tether that you're supposed to connect around your seat post as a safety measure, is very short, and there's not much room to get your hands in, so it's quite fiddly to attach it. And also my son is 15m old, and is about average, or just a bit above average height, but his legs seem very short for the seat, since if their thigh bones aren't long enough, they can't bend their legs at 90 degrees to get their feet in the little foot holders. For older toddlers this isn't an issue, but if my son was any smaller, he wouldn't be able to have his feet comfortably in it, and I'd have ... MoreThis is a great bike seat for toddlers, it feels very sturdy, is comfortable, and is also lightweight.
